Gene Mutations 1. A geneticist found that a particular mutation had no effect on the protein coded by a gene. These mutations are called silent mutations, because the protein created will stay the same. 2. A point mutation is when one base is substituted for another (substitution). This type of mutation would NOT change the remaining bases. 3. A frameshift mutation is when a base is either added (Insertion) or deleted (deletion). This type of mutation changes the remaining order of the bases. 4. Do you think a point mutation or a frameshift mutation would be more harmful to the organism? Why? Directions: Analyze the DNA sequences below. Highlight the location of the mutation and answer the questions. REMEMBER: 3 types of mutations are insertion, deletion and substitution. 1. Original DNA Sequence: Mutated DNA Sequence: AAT TAA CCG CCC AAT TAA CCA CCC What type of mutation is the mutation above? _________________________________ Is the mutation a point or a frameshift mutation? _________________________________ 2.
