Root Hair Cell Organelles Function Nucleus An organelle which contains the genetic material that controls the cell’s activities. It is surrounded by its own membrane. Cytoplasm A gel-like substance where most of the cell’s chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes which control these reactions. Cell Wall A rigid structure made of cellulose, which surrounds the cell membrane. It supports the cell and strengthens it. Vacuole A large organelle that contains cell sap (a weak solution of sugars and salts). It helps support the cell. Cell Membrane This membrane forms the outer surface of the cell and controls the substances that go in and out. Ribosomes Small organelles where proteins are made in a cell. Mitochondrion Small organelles were most of the reactions of aerobic respiration take place. Respiration transfers energy that the cell need to work. Root hair cells are adapted for taking up water and mineral ions by having a large surface area to increase the rate of absorption. They also contain lots of mitochondria , which release energy from glucose during respiration in order to provide the energy needed for active transport. (BBC Bitesize)
