SONNET 18 / SONNET XXX OF FATAL
INTERVIEW
A sonnet is a poetic form that has been used for centuries, with love usually as its subject.
It is typically a 14-line lyric poem written with a strict pattern of rhythm and rhyme. A
Shakespearean sonnet includes:
• a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg
• two-line unit
• a pattern of rhythm called iambic pentameter. A rhythm unit of meter is a foot. The
most commonly used metrical foot is an iamb, which is an unstressed syllable followed
by a stressed syllable. In Shakespearean sonnets, each line usually has f ive iambs, or
feet. When a line has five feet, it is referred to as pentameter.
