It is typically a 14-line lyric poem written with a strict pattern of rhythm and rhyme. A Shakespearean sonnet includes: • a rhyme scheme of abab cdcd efef gg • two-line unit • a pattern of rhythm called iambic pentameter. A rhythm unit of meter is a foot. The most commonly used metrical foot is an iamb, which is an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. In Shakespearean sonnets, each line usually has f ive iambs, or feet. When a line has five feet, it is referred to as pentameter.
