Group Mini-Project Form A

Laws of Sines and Cosines
A triangular piece of land has been donated to your town to create a garden, and you are on the
landscaping committee. The piece of land lies on the corner of two roads that form a 58° angle. The back
side of the triangle, (not along either road) is a stone wall that is 451 ft long. The side along one of the
roads is bordered by a sidewalk 500 ft long.
Your committee has decided to plant:
 A hedgerow along the side bordering the other road. The hedges must be planted 18 inches apart and
cost $22.50 apiece.
 A flower garden in the corner of the triangle between the stone wall and the sidewalk, extending in a 100
ft radius from the corner. The cost of planting the flowers is $12.00 per square foot.
 A lawn in the remainder of the piece of land. The cost of laying sod is $17.25 per square foot.
The committee must submit a proposal to be presented to the town to obtain the funds for planting the
garden. The proposal must have two parts:
 A report to be submitted to the town manager which contains all of the details of the process used
to determine the dimensions, areas, and costs involved, and
 A visual/oral presentation to be delivered at a town meeting, which gives a complete but less
detailed summary of the process and results.
Both must include the following:
 The dimensions of the piece of land, including side lengths accurate to the nearest tenth of a foot and
angle measures accurate to the nearest degree.
 The dimensions and total cost of planting each of the three parts of the landscaping plan, to the nearest
cent.
 A visually appealing, accurate scale drawing of the garden with its landscaping.
The report for the town manager must also include the following:
 All calculations used to determine the above information must be shown clearly, so they can be
confirmed by the town accountant.
 The reasoning for using the chosen processes for determining the measurements and costs.
 A narrative explaining your process for determining the dimensions and costs.
You will work in groups in class for two days. You will need to determine what tasks need to be done as a
group, get them accomplished, and assign tasks that can be done individually outside of class to the members of
your group. You will not be given class time to work on this for the remainder of the week. On Monday of next
week, you will be given time to put everything together to review your work and plan and practice your
presentations. Your group will present the results to the class on Tuesday of next week.
