SC: I can recall facts about Mama Miti I can recall why she won the Nobel Peace Prize Wangari Muta Maathai was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. That was in 2004. The Nobel Peace Prize is the most prominent award given to any person who has worked to encourage peace among countries or groups of people anywhere in the world. She started the Green Belt Movement to combat deforestation of Kenya. She wants peaceful coexistence of people and nature and battles people who want to make money from cutting down trees. She has been arrested many times and put in prison for what she believes. In 1976 Wangari Maathai introduced the idea of planting trees for peace to Kenyan citizens. Since then the Green Belt Movement has planted more than thirty million trees in Kenya and other African countries.
