Assignments: 10% 15% 10% 15% 15% 10% 25% Anyone who is unable to present his/her speech on the assigned day will have the grade for that speech reduced by one grade, e.g. A to A-, no matter what the reason for the delay. Anyone who is learning disabled, or for any other reason requires an accommodation to take examinations, prepare outlines etc. must notify me in advance of such needs and provide the necessary documentation. You are permitted 6 hours of absence. After that, the final grade will be reduced. Speeches will be assigned for a multi day period. You have the opportunity to sign up for the day you wish to deliver your speech. If you are absent on the day people sign up to give their speeches, your speech is due on the first assigned date in the course outline. With the exception of the Sales Talk, all speeches should be 6-8 minutes, with 1 minute’s grace; after that you will be penalized. A student who does not meet the minimum required time cannot receive a grade higher than C. No one will be permitted to give a speech without an outline and Power Point, if required. It is strongly urged that you experiment using Power Point in your beginning speeches, before it becomes required and therefore graded All speeches will receive peer feedback and written feedback. If anyone has a problem with a grade, please discuss it with me. No notes are permitted in giving your speech. Object Speech: Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to permit you to become comfortable speaking in front of the room, and to help you to get to know the other students in the class. Since you will be speaking about yourself, anxiety should be minimal. The speech concentrates on selecting an appropriate topic, writing an effective introduction and conclusion. Procedure: Step 1: Choose an object that is reflective of yourself or your heritage or culture. It may be an article of clothing, a piece of art, a photograph, or a household or business item. Step 2: Prepare your central idea and specific purpose. Organize your sequence of ideas. Step 3: Prepare an effective introduction using the steps described in your textbook. Step 4: Prepare an effective conclusion using the suggestions in the book. Step 5: Practice! Practice! Practice! Step 6: Bring the object to class and explain what it is, and why it is significant to you. Grading: topic choice, introduction, conclusion, clear message about significance. Informative Speech: Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to effectively research, organize, and deliver an informative speech to your audience. Extemporaneous delivery is required for this speech. In an informative speech you are acting as a teacher by relating content to your audience in an objective manner. Procedures: You are to prepare a 6-8 minute speech on a topic of your choosing. All topics must be approved by your instructor. A detailed preparation outline, audience analysis, and reference list with a minimum of three sources must be submitted to the instructor on speech day. While not required, you are strongly urged to try using Power Point with this speech. Step 1: Choose an academically challenging topic. Refer to the textbook on topic selection. All topics must be approved by the instructor. Step 2: Begin your research by trying to answer a specific question about the topic. Keep in mind that you need a minimum of 3 sources for full credit on the speech. A note on sources: You may use electronic sources but avoid web-based sources. Wikipedia.org may not be used as a reference for your speeches! Step 3: Formulate your specific purpose statement and central idea. Step 4: Prepare a detailed outline of your speech. Be sure to include a thorough description of your topic in the introduction. Step 5: Write your audience analysis and compile your reference list. Step 6: Prepare your Power Point slides, if you choose to use Power Point. Step 7: Practice, practice, practice! Step 8: Deliver your speech to the class on the assigned date. Other Important Criteria: Informative Speech #1 has a time limit of 6-8 minutes and must be completed somewhere between 5 and 9 minutes in order to receive full credit. The speech must be delivered extemporaneously (Refer to your textbook for specifics). Reading your speech will result in a low grade. Use gender appropriate language. Remember to refer to your sources during your speech. A grade sheet will be emailed to you and must be included with your outline. Sales Talk: Objective: The purpose of this speech is to help you to develop effective delivery, and to learn strategies for effective salesmanship. Procedure: You must select a real product and deliver a thoughtful sales presentation of 5 minutes. You must speak for 4-6 minutes to receive full credit on this assignment. This is a speech not a TV commercial. Since the sincerity and knowledge of the speaker are essential to a sales presentation, it is expected that you will not use notes. Persuasive Speech Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to effectively research, organize, and deliver a persuasive speech to your audience. Utilizing persuasive techniques such as emotional appeal, argument repetition, and credible evidence are encouraged. Power Point is required for this speech.
