flash floods and many mores.
“The Green Volunteers” is a regular online
magazine published by ANYV. This issue is focusing
youth engagement during Covid-19 and beyond.
We have received enormous articles from different
part of the world. The horrible Covid-19 disrupted
everyone’s life and damages the world economy.
We are trying to engage people to organize online
activities, i.e. online education and photography
contest. As we know, more than 1 billion youth are
having their daily life disrupted by the spread of
COVID-19. Students, teachers, families, and every
youth stuck in this uncertainty. They become bores,
hopeless, exhausted, depressed, and unstable
and hesitate to take any decision. Bearing all these
into consideration, the Asian Network of Youth
Volunteers (ANYV) Society determined to stand
beside them with knowledge and intelligence.
To utilize their time ANYV was providing free
online courses so that they could build their life
in this pandemic and post-pandemic. We are very
thankful to all 3502 registered students of 11
different courses from 17 countries.
ANYV also arranged a photography contest 2020.
As the quarantine time increases, underprivileged
people of our society are in crisis. Lower-middle
class families, financially poor families are going to
suffer the most during this time. In this situation,
we were decided to extend our hand to those who
need them. The funds of the photography contests
will be forwarded to the corona affected people. As
there are no registration fees, we have decided to
raise funds by selling the photos we get from the
participants.
We are publishing 18 articles out of 32 article
received for this issue. The magazine is aiming to
receive more articles in the upcoming issue. I am
thankful to every authors, contributors and every

Pandemic and online class are both familiar
words but new experience to most of
the people. In 2020, most of the people
experienced them in reality for the first time.
The last severe pandemic of this magnitude
in “recent” history was the 1919 Influenza.
Online teaching method can be an effective
way to avoid session jam and to create a safe
space to continue educational activities in this
serious pandemic situation.
The Corona virus pandemic led the
educational institutions to a standstill.
Universities
have
adopted
online
methods to avoid session jam. Private
universities started online courses from
the very beginning of the pandemic due
to their proper resources. Though public
universities were lagging behind, recently
they have started to take online classes. But
it is a matter of regret that it is not being
properly fruitful due to low percentage rate
of attendance as some of the students don’t
have access to internet, and smart devices
to connect to the classes. Even when some
of the students are joinning the classes,
they are not being able to pay attention to
the classes due to bad network connection.
Online teaching method can be an effective
way to avoid session jam and to create a safe

this serious pandemic situation. But proper

for ensuring participation of

Moreover,

the teachers and students a

In our modern and globalised economy,
businesses are under more pressure
than ever to differentiate, evolve and
adapt to stay relevant. From Finance to
Sales and everything in-between, the
effort to maximise margins has led many
businesses to take an introspective look
into how they can eliminate inefficiencies.
A common solution has been the adaption
of automation technologies, where certain
business processes and functions that
would otherwise be performed by a
human, are now automated.
A common application of this has been in
the manufacturing industry and has resulted
in many products that previously required
a significant labor force, to now requiring
virtually none at all.

A common application of this has been
in the manufacturing industry and has
resulted in many products that previously
required a significant labor force, to now
requiring virtually none at all. However,
the use of automation technology isn’t
only restricted to the manufacturing
industry. Various technologies have
progressed in recent years to the extent
that they threaten those in conventional
business roles. Many common occupations
such as clerks, secretaries and general
administrative staff have increasingly

become redundant with the
use of modern technology.
From an efficiency standpoint
this could be considered a
great success - but in the
process many people have
lost their jobs, raising the
difficult question whether
artificial intelligence (AI) and
robots are more harmful
than beneficial at he end of
the day.
Many people are starting to
wonder if they are next in line
for replacement by AI or a
robot. But don’t worry! not all
hope is lost. The good news
is that not every business is
compatible with automation.
Many professions and
The Green Volunteers
services require empathy,
intuition and social
interaction to be effective.
For example; salespeople,
healthcare workers, social
workers, police, teachers
and artists. But everything
here is mentioned the story
before COVID -19 pandemic,
the story can change after
corona period!
The high cost of labor in
Europe, USA, or Japan has
created the necessary of
automation or robot. But it
is true, still there are some
jobs which are not possible
to accomplish successfully
by robot rather for this
we need human brain. So,
this is a dilemma for what
the developed countries
are moving towards Asia
or Africa for production
purposes. Consequently,
the rise of China, India,
Vietnam or Ethiopia has been
observed as new economic
power. These countries
have very cheap labor
force. Bangladesh is also
considered another source
in this regard. But because of
political problem, corruption
and proper planning we are
clearly behind them. Despite
that; everything was going
well! But it is anticipated that
these countries and their
huge labor force may face
a big challenge in coming
Volume 3 Issue 1 (2020)
16
Corona virus will make this
selfish world more selfish.
Countries will try to reduce
their dependency on
other countries. Specially
the sectors of health, the
developed countries may
again try to self-reliant. As a
result, Europe or US owned
the medicine and medical
equipment companies
may shift their production
facilities from Asia or Africa
to their own countries. Here
the challenge is labor cost.
The labor cost in Europe or
USA is so far higher than
that of Asia or Africa. It is not
possible for them to carry on
their business with this high
cost. And, then automation
or robot is the best solution.
The use of robot or
automated technology will be
accelerated. Human will lose
their job.
This can happen in other
sectors as well. Because of
corona virus, the world’s
people are losing trust
form each other. Safety and
cleanliness will become a big
concern. The businesses will
try to reduce human touch in
their business activities and
this decision can help them

to gain more safety and trust,
and thus it can bring more
success in their business.
For example; in restaurant
business the use of robot for
food serving and cleaning
purpose may increase in high
volume comparing before
corona situation. This is also
alarming for human and
millions of people all over the
world may lose their jobs!
The countries with small
population but very rich
they will give more focus on
technology, digitalization and
use of robot everywhere.
Nordic countries (Norway,
Sweden, Denmark, Finland)
or the country like New
Zealand who are very famous
for refuge support or human
rights, may change their
policy. Because of safety
issue or the effect of corona
virus, they may change
their policy. Economically
the countries have been
facing huge difficulties and
it will continue next couple
of years. The companies of
these countries have already
started struggling. So, as a
survival issue this companies
will lay off a good number of
employees. Consequently,
thousands of immigrant
people must be going to
lose their jobs. And, there
is no hope to get back their
jobs in near future. May be
the companies may change
their policy permanently and
they can move on towards
automation! So, we don’t
know what happens in next
years after COVID -19, but
it’s true the virus will change
the world, and nothing will
become like earlier!

Despite the fact that corona

The COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh
is part of the worldwide pandemic of
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused
by severe acute respiratory syndrome
coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The virus was
confirmed to have spread to Bangladesh
in March 2020. The first three known cases
were reported on 8 March 2020 by the
country’s epidemiology institute, IEDCR.
Since then, the pandemic has spread day by

Infections remained low until the end of

continue until now.

the coronavirus pandemic is
that I get to spend time with
my family and share with
them what I’m learning. I get to
involve my parents in activities
that I have only done with my
friends. I also get to see what
my siblings are learning and
help them in their need. I
enjoy staying home. I actually
have more time on my hands
than I know what to do with.
I’ve been trying to use that
extra time for productive
things, like learning how to

being at home is I get to hang
around with my family more
and not being able to be
around other people helps
me to get outside, and do

has positive and negative
consequences. I also found
negative ramification on this
ground. The technology can
be amusement, but it doesn’t
always help. I’m doing online
learning through Google

it’s difficult. Problems which I

In our villages, the elderly
usually live on their own,
relying on family and friends
to bring their shopping

Moreover,
the
current situation puts them at

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
DURING THIS PANDEMIC:
Volunteering in the time
of the pandemic is more
complicated than in normal
circumstances, As I said in the
above mentioned points that
we all relatives help elderly
and other destitute peoples so
that they don’t exposed to the
virus. The activities we done is

good nutrition and sufficient
calories are important for
body and mind, as well as for
keeping spirits up.
LESSONS LEARNED FROM
COVID-19:
1. Hygiene helps: If any old
lesson came handy during
the COVID-19 crisis it was
that hygiene helps. We have
all been taught to wash our
hands every time we’ve been
to a place that could have
disease causing germs, when
we return home from outside
and from time to time for
good measure.
2. Our medical capacities are
limited but we have huge
reserve capacity: Medical
capacities, especially in urban
areas, have usually been
The Green Volunteers
taken for granted. Our worry
has been the quality of care.
But we have learnt now that
the richest of nations are
limited in their capacity to
treat people if there is a large
outbreak of a disease. To
alleviate the massive pressure
on the healthcare industry,
governments, including the
Bangladesh
government,
have implemented several
measures to enhance capacity
– right from equipping
tertiary medical care givers to
getting healthcare on wheels
activated. Bangladesh has a
large qualified and capable
base of medical professionals
who are not allowed into
regular practice and it is to
our credit that we tapped
into that base to tackle the
pandemic. The existence
of this reserve cohort of
qualified medical personnel is
a welcome realisation indeed.
too much. While physiological
and security needs have been
paramount, many have found
ways to learn new skills or
do things they have always
wanted to do but couldn’t
make time for. Families and
friends have engaged over
video calls and many have
“met” members of their
family more often during the
lockdown than they otherwise
do! Despite the lockdown we
have discovered that we can
satisfy all needs in Maslow’s
hierarchy. Many have learnt
what really matters to them.

LET THE QUARANTINE

BANGLADESH
CHAITY DEBNATH DIPA
Corona’s violence is going on all over the world
now. Tha outbreak of the coronavirus, which
began in December, 2019, is still ongoing. Due
to the outbreak of covid-19, public life largely
come to a standstill. In corona’s panic, we no
longer leave the house without much need.
Many of us out of breath while living under
this house arrest. It’s surprising to think!!
before the advent of this virus, we used to be
desperate to get some rest in our daily lives.
Many a day, perhaps with this regret, “the day
is over, why does time go by so fast??
I can’t do my hobbies anymore.” We stay busy
from morning till night. We don’t even have

time to sit in peace.
And now in the corona epidemic, we seem to
be missing our busy lives. In this quarantine,
time seems to be running out from sitting at
home all day. What a strange desire we have!
When we’re busy, we regret not having enough
time. And when we spend our free time, we
say, “Our busy life was good.“
Because of being locked in four walls for the
fear of coronavirus, we’ve got a lot of leisure
time. In our relentless pursuit of life, we don’t
have much time or opportunity to look back.
Now, as we’ve got endless leisure time in

chance, nature is
also adorning itself with
amazing beauty. So, in this
quarantine, we can equip and
enrich ourselves with various
skills. This, such as: learning
English, learning different
software skills, having online
course etc.For learning these,
we have internet!! We can
learn these online through
internet connection on our
smartphones that will help us
to be smarter in the future.
The Green Volunteers
Quarantine has given us the
opportunity to take down the
dusty books from shelves,
to clean them up and to
gain knowledge from them.
Book can be our best friend
in this retirement. Book has
no alternative to expand
our knowledge
beyond
institutional education. So,
we can read various selfdeveloping books, novels,
short stories etc to make our
lives more productive and
effective in quarantine. In this
case, internet can also help
us in detail. We can download
and read pdf of book on our
smartphone. We can do a
variety of hobby activities for
entertainment. These are like
drawing, singing, cooking,
making different things for
house. And yes, there are
many
events,
seminars,
competitions that are being
arranged through online now.
We can participate in them
and develop our talent.
That way, we can do our best
to make this time better.
Also, many people running
in the rush are almost losing
contact with their relatives
and friends.It’s important to
be strong mentally during
covid-19 outbreak. So we
can talk to our relatives and
friends on audio or video calls
through internet. It will bring
peace to all of us. We should
not only think of our friends
and relatives. We also have
to think about our society
during
this
quarantine.
Many people are fighting
with poverty in this time. We
should help them according
to our own capabilities. Many
organisations are working
continuously on this issue.
It’s better to join those
organisations as volunteers.
And the most important thing
is to remember the Creator
everyday, every moment.
Corona is now trampling
all over the world. Now we
should remember our creator
more and more. We should
all live ethically in accordance
with religious discipline. And
of course, I’ll be aware and
help others to be aware. I’ll be
clean and encourage others
to be clean. Finally, everything
depends on our perspective.
If we have a positive outlook,
we’ll be able to use this time
of quarantine in a reasonable
manner. And that’s how,
quarantine can be made
productive.

quarantine, it’s time to look
back on the days left in our
own life. It’s the time to learn
from the mistakes of the past
and adjust ourselves to live
well in the days ahead. So,
while we’re in quarantine,
we have the opportunity to
think about ourselves and
to give ourselves more time.
The next thing that comes
to mind is to give time to
family. Because of being busy,
many of us can’t give enough
time to our family. So, in this
quarantine, we should all
spend a lot of time with family.
This will strengthen the bond
between family members. To
avoid the effects of corona, as
we’re at home all day, roads,
educational
institutions,
factories etc have all become
depopulated.

When the news began circulating with the
increase in cases of infection in Malaysia, I
did not care much about the matter, and
I was practicing my normal daily life as a

go to the library, lab, class and I eat in the

I am one of the few foreign students who live

Since I am studying agriculture, I can help the
farmers. It will be my own real experience.
Many people cultivate vegetables on a
small scale, such as rooftop gardeners.
They do not get proper guidance in time for
disease and pest control. At first, I planned
to cooperate with them. Since there is less
opportunity to go out of the house, so I used
the Internet. I converted my old group on
Facebook into an agricultural information
based and problem-solving one. I started
posting regularly about various information
and diseases related to agriculture. Within a
few days, the number of members exceeded
1,000. Many people started posting about
agricultural issues. The leaves of the papaya
turning yellow, the leaves of the eggplant
rotting, the leaves of the pepper tree
rotting, the spots on the lemon, the insects
etc problems were coming from them
asking for solution. I continued to solve the
problems in the comments section.
Many people started inboxing me to know
the solution. To make this work more
beautiful and to solve it quickly, I teamed up

papers on Google. We lag
behind in technical education
due to a lack of internship
opportunities in agriculture.
So at first, I did not want
to directly advise farmers
on a large scale. By solving
agricultural problems, my own
experience continued to grow.
Besides, these problems were
discussed in our curriculum.
How any pesticide works, how
to prepare the land, when
to apply it, what fertilizer to
use, why flowers and fruits
fall off - these are taught in
our different semesters. So
solving the problem was a
little easier for me.
However, some problems
cannot be solved by looking
at the pictures. In this case,
I suggest contacting the
Upazila Agriculture Officer.
Slowly I started advising my
neighbors. Many have been
benefited. They expressed
their gratitude for getting
such advice easily. And this
is my great achievement.
As students of the Faculty
of Agriculture, it is our
responsibility to serve the
farmers. I am proud to be able
to devote myself to the service
of the farmer brothers during
this pandemic situation.

The world is developing rapidly with

industrialization and urbanization. The

cities, the environment is being worse day

overexploitation of resources has caused
climate change and affected every region.
The forests and green vegetation in
rural areas can assist in reducing climate

about population living in urban areas.
Although various governmental bodies as
well as I/NGOs are working for creating
better environment for example, using
bio-degradable products, riding electric
vehicles, reducing plastic use and pollution,
it is still not enough. It’s time to think
about something better, which is, Urban
Forestry. But there is still an argument,
Can urban forestry help in maintaining
good environmental condition along with
reducing impacts of climate change?
Urban forestry is the care and management
of single trees and tree populations in urban

We can find the answer to this question
when we get the concept of urban forestry.

“How to proceed from this moment of

crisis has already put a question mark over
UN member states signed Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), a collection
of 17 goals focusing mainly on a better
environment and socio-economic future.
Being a developing country, Bangladesh
is facing more challenges in continuing
sustainable development. Corona crisis has
brought some alarming and long-lasting
effects on the sustainable development
race of Bangladesh.
First of all, the Corona crisis brought
unintended temporary benefits to the
environment which satisfies 5 SDGs
(Goal 6: Clean water; Goal 7: Affordable
& clean energy; Goal 13: Climate Action;
Goal 14: Life below water; Goal 15: Life

transportation brought to a halt, there
has been a substantial impact in reducing

something that is being

Additionally, COVID-19 has
positive impacts on reducing
water and sound pollution.
Lockdown in Dhaka city has
reduced overwhelming sound
pollution to a large extent as
plying of public buses, trucks,
trains, motorbikes, etc., are
suspended (1). A harsh truth
to believe, these temporary
benefits will assumably not
exist once the lockdown ends.
However, Corona crisis has
brought a devastating and

economy which is related to 6
SDGs (Goal 1: No Poverty; Goal

Besides, Bangladesh is facing
a huge crisis in remittances
amid COVID-19; World Bank
estimates have projected
that total remittances by
Bangladeshi migrant workers
will fall to US$14 billion for
2020, around a 25% decrease
from the previous year (4).
These losses imply economic
instability which is a big barrier
for sustainable development
in Bangladesh.
Finally, the Corona crisis

on social stability which is
related to 4 SDGs (Goal 4:

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT
EPIDEMIC!
MD. REZWAN AHMED MAHEDI

DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACY, COMILLA UNIVERSITY
In 1926, the Scottish microbiologist Alexander
Fleming invented the first antibiotic, penicillin.
Later, various antibiotics were discovered
for his benefit, which are widely praised for
stopping various epidemics such as cholera.
One of the blessings of modern medicine
is the discovery of antibiotics. As a result,
it is possible to treat many diseases that
once killed a large number of people. But
now, after taking antibiotics, people are
recovering in a few days and are able to walk.
So we have endless gratitude to antibiotics.
Antibiotic drugs are usually made from
fungi or other microorganisms. Usually this
drug reduces the proliferation of bacteria,
suppressing harmful bacteria. In 1926, the
Scottish microbiologist Alexander Fleming
invented the first antibiotic, penicillin. Later,
various antibiotics were discovered for
his benefit, which are widely praised for
stopping various epidemics such as cholera.
These antibiotics range from one to five
classes. Antibiotics usually stops bacterial
invasion by destroying the bacterial wall.
Before moving on to the main discussion,
we need to know what a bacterium is. It
is a group of single-celled, microscopic
microorganisms without organized nuclei. It
has about 15,000 species. Not all bacteria
are bad. Rather many bacteria, even most
of which live in our gut, are extremely
beneficial. However, the harmful side of
bacteria is usually more noticeable to us.
Now I say, what is antibiotic resistance!

. Antibiotic resistance happens
when the germs no longer
respond to the antibiotics
designed to kill them. So,
how do these bacteria build
up resistance to an antibiotic
drug? When we take any
antibiotic the doctor gives us
a certain amount. But when
we do not take antibiotics as
directed by the doctor, the
bacteria get a chance! We can
make mistakes but bacteria
will not make mistakes. When
you do not complete the full

extensive research on such
crises. However, if we are a
little more careful when it
comes to taking medicine, we
will be able to get rid of such
problems.
So, how could it turn into an
epidemic? Scientists have
speculated that if these
antibiotic-resistant bacteria
were able to spread through
sneezing and coughing, there
could be a greater pandemic
than the corona virus in the
future. But the hope is that the

Due to the current situation, students have

Two aspects of this situation have been

Recently, the usage of social

of Social Media in Education
has great positive impact on
it. Thanks to the use of social

take education to a unique
level. Let’s use it to advance
the research level.
With the help of an example,
we can understand very well
how the use of social media

today I have tried to improve
my career by learning
different types of skills by
using social media and it has
only happened as a result
of all these factors of social
media.
On the one hand, research
has indicated that in recent
years social media has
penetrated almost all types
of organizations. Educational
institutions have not been
left behind too and have
been adopters of this global
phenomenon. Social media
takes many forms such as
social networking sites, blogs,
blogs, instant messaging and
virtual communities.
To embark that, the social
networking site Facebook
appears to clearly emerge
as a winner predominantly
because of its large number
of members. It allows its
members to create and share
content, build relationships
and enable collaboration and
connectivity irrespective of
geographical location.
Besides, the rapid rise of social
media provides numerous
possibilities
for
higher
education institutions to adopt
it to further their learning and
teaching endeavors. Worldwide mostly high uptake of
social media makes it suitable
for administrators, managers,
learners and teachers in

Moreover, the usage of

challenges but its importance
cannot be ignored. Research

Some research shows that

This is probably due to the

UNDERSTANDING MENTAL HEALTH:

ABSTRACT:
The 21st century along with it’s blessings of
new and technological advanced gadgets
have introduced mankind to new type of
health concern, the disease of depression,
which has led to a substantial number of
suicidal cases over the decades. Depression,
like many other traits of man have always
been clinically overlooked in most of the
countries. Suicides on the other hand is not
something that any government has dared
to trifle with. Hence, we find in our interest
to seek out the causes and methods of
possible recovery from depression, thus
reducing the cases of suicides. That being
said, suicides are not the only outcomes of
depression. Marital discord, child abuse,
rape cases and most importantly a rapid rise
of drug addicts are the possible miseries
that depression bring with it. Loneliness
however is a different issue, still loneliness
seems to have a close relationship with
depression. Depression and loneliness
creates a cycle of cause and effect. So
denying a person of social acquaintances,
can ultimately lead to create the chain of
social discord. Thus depression along with
loneliness are to incorporated in mental

That means, a depressed

to do anything. This lack of
intention ultimately starts
a chain reaction of mental
and physical trauma. For
many years, a misconception
prevailed in our society
that any void created in
the mind is confined. But
recent case studies proves
The Green Volunteers
Now coming to the causes
of depression, we are
introduced to the concept of
the ‘vicious cycle of mental
mania’. This is such a cycle
where the factors and
effects are interchangeable.
That means any effect of
mental disturbance, be it
psychological or biological
will serve as the cause of
further mental disturbance.
Thus
developing
an
interchangeable relationship
between the causes and effect
of mental instability creating a
loop, which in normal sense
seems to be unbreakable.
Considering this factor many
people focus on avoiding this
cycle rather than treating it.
Now loneliness is a complete
different idea which may
always
not
co-relate
to depression. It is not
essential for a lone person
to be depressed. Because
loneliness, sometimes acts
as a engaging factor of
perseverance. However, in
most of the cases a lone
person turns out to be

depressed. Now again most
of us have a misconception
that a lone person is always
friendless. To some extent,
this may be true but with
the advent of easy access to
digital social media, loneliness
cut off its relationship with
being friendless. At present,
a person may have a lots of
virtual friends, fans but always
may feel like a fish out of the
water. Because deep down he/
she may feel that nobody can
see or feel the person behind
his /her veil of social profile.
Thus leaving the person to be
mentally isolated and in turn
mentally confidence less. This
ultimately paves the road for
a person to be depressed and consider an example, Mr.

From a guardian’s point of
