 Family and community recreation activities have existed
since prehistoric times.
 The invention of money by the Sumerians in Babylonia
are probably the beginnings of the modern era of travel.
 Early forms of recreation among the Egyptians,
Assyrians, and Babylonians included hunting, horse
racing, wrestling, boxing, archery, music, dancing, and
drama.
- Early Time
 Early Greek civilization sponsored athletes to compete in a variety of
sports events.
 The Romans used slaves and professionals to provide music, drama,
and dance.
 The Greeks and Romans improved roads and naval travel for military
purposes. It became safer and more comfortable.
 Alexander the Great attracted 700,000 tourists in a single season to
Turkey in 334BC
 Ancient Greeks traveled to the Olympic Games, to spas, to festivals,
and to the pyramids in Egypt.
 Romans traveled extensively, having 175 holidays for leisure and
recreation

- Middle Ages and the
Renaissance
- The decline of the rich and isolation hindered travelling
- Following the Middle Ages was the Renaissance,
+ A revival of learning, cultural arts, and travel.
+ Fairs, exhibitions, operas, theater, and beer gardens became
common.
+ The wealthy participated in ballroom dance, tennis, and games
=> Grand Tour – an educational tour
Young aristocrats, and members of the rising middle class, to travel
and study throughout Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Lands.
- Early Travel and Consumerism
- In 1841, Englishman Thomas Cook chartered a train to carry 540 people
- By 1845, Thomas Cook became the first modern travel agent and
his business extended to Switzerland, the Nile, the Holy Lands,
Mount Everest, India, Norway, and Yellowstone Park.
- In 1846, he took 500 people on a tour of Scotland and later arranged for
over 165,000 people to attend the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London
- 20th century
- The amusement park industry grew significantly in America
- The invention of the phonograph and silent motion pictures
- Improvements in transportation, specifically trains and later the
automobile and airplane.
- World War disruption
- Electronic innovations generated a huge home entertainment
industry of television, stereo equipment, video recorders, and
computers
- Early 21st Century
- After the 9/11 attack, the world of travel changed. Travelers became more cautious
about where to travel and placed the greatest amount of importance on feeling safe.
- The rise of tourism could be one of the most symbolic phenomena of these first
years of the 21st century.
- New tourism trends are born, towards the environment and sustainable
communities
- The covid-19 pandemic changes the commercial recreation and tourism
