Hypothesis Testing Practice using the Pulse Dataset – through Multiple Linear Regression
Instructions: For each question, state the first 3 steps of hypothesis testing (hypotheses, test,
alpha/critical value). In the lab class Thursday, we will practice running these tests so you can come to a
conclusion for each.
1. What is the relationship between whether the student sat or ran (TRT) and their second pulse
measurement (PULSE2)?
2. What is the relationship between whether the student sat or ran (TRT) and their second pulse
measurement (PULSE2) when controlling for frequency of exercise (EXERCISE)?
3. What is the relationship between whether the student sat or ran (TRT) and their second pulse
measurement (PULSE2) when controlling for age (AGE)?
4. Does the second pulse measurement have a linear relationship with age?
5. Does mean second pulse measurement differ by treatment (sat or ran)?
6. Is there a mean difference in pulse from first to second measurement?
7. Is regular smoking independent of gender?
8. Does mean first pulse measurement differ by frequency of exercise?
9. Does mean age in this population differ from that of Kent State undergraduate students in the
biostatistics course this semester, which is 21.1 years?
10. Is the proportion of males in this population different from the proportion of males in the Kent state
undergraduate biostatistics course this semester (48.8%)?
