Describe her way of living and the way she takes care of her children? Yes, there this our neighbor who is a widow. She is very onhand taking care of her children, and always smiles whenever we see each other, making me thought that she enjoys her life even without her husband. Post-reading activity 1. Give the message of the poem. We all experience different hardships in life wherein we should stay positive, face these with positivity. Being a widow is not that easy especially if you are in that position yourself. 2. Paraphrase the poem. The widow, together with her relatives, didn’t expect any assistance from others. She always thought that there is no other person like her, as she always thought that she is the poorest woman around the world despite the help of others unto her. As she thought about the dying children during the war, she then asked her who is the least fortunate. 3. Give your interpretation of the poem. The widow, in the poem, feels down and pities herself because of her situation being a widow – a single parent. She cannot even see that she’s fortunate receiving help from others and still provided some assistance. And compare to those who experience difficulties and others who are much worse, she is very fortunate still. 4. What scene in the poem is evoked in the poem? The scene in the fourth stanza, showing and making us imaging dying children during wars, which is very hard for a woman, or a mother to experience in her life, depicting death and separation. 5. To whom was the writer speaking? The writer was speaking to the widow, who thinks less of her situation, and apparently, the writer just wants to say that she must go on positively with her life, stay put together, and go on in her life. 6. What perception does the writer imply on the readers like you? What mood is aroused in the poem? The mood aroused in the poem is pessimistic, because of the emotion and actions shown by the widow by keeping herself down and didn’t acknowledge good things in her. 8. What do you feel while reading the poem? Why do you think these emotions evoke you? I feel sorry for the widow as she lost her partner. We may not know but maybe it is just very hard for her to be in her situation, losing her life partner who would help her in her difficulties and hardships in life. Though as she pities herself, I still feel sad for her. 9. Is the title appropriate? Why or why not? What another title can you give this poem? The title of the poem is appropriate because the purpose of the author is to make everyone realize that we have different problems to face in life, wherein there is something inside us that we always keep fighting with, either you or with others, in which everyone is also suffering. Another title could be “Go On with Life”. 10. What lessons on the moral statement does this poem provide? The lesson this poem provides is to be positive in life, look for the good and brighter side of every situation, and being optimistic in this world full of problems and hardships. But I wrote this letter to you to tell you that we are not forever on the downcast. Just as the Lord always fulfills the plans he has for his children, the sun will soon rise again and everything will be all right in his perfect timing. I hope someday when you are busy laughing with the people around you, you would not notice that the pain inside you slowly turns into acceptance. I hope someday in the middle of your busy moments, you cannot notice that blessings are continuously pouring the way you never experienced before. I hope someday when you look in the mirror, you would see a powerful woman who survived everything she never knew she can. I hope someday you can look at life the way how the sun shines brightly directly to the Earth. A life sent back to the Lord is not a finished life but an amazing proof that God wants his children to be at his side again. Your husband’s life isn’t lost but he’s right above looking for you 24/7. He just went above so that he can widely see and guide the people he cherishes the most. You may not see him physically but right now in his second life, he is right there at your side guiding you in the most unique way. Do you still remember the moment he vows in front of you and the Lord during your wedding day, to take care of you for better or worse? I hope that fact is enough for you to think that you’re still beside him just in an extraordinary way. I hope you can now consider the relieving fact that he’s now home. He is now at the safest place where pain and sorrow do not exist. He is now taking the most satisfying rest in his life. So while he’s up there watching you, make him the proudest. Let him cheer you with the Lord. Let him shout your name in heaven and say that you are the bravest and strongest woman. Now that you are living with the kind of life you do not use to have, and everything seems hard, from going to bed alone and eating meals without him in front of you, just remember the struggle you also faced when you used to be single and dependent with your parents and then shifting to the life with a partner where your decisions collide and incompatibility sometimes arises. It was also a challenge for you at that time to adjust to the life that God allows you to have. Just remember that pain is not forever. It is up to us how we handle situations. It is all in the mindset. I know in the coming years, your life will be more extraordinary because you will be an empowered woman who is also stronger. Your life will soon again glow and right above, there is a man who cheers you together with the angels. Sincerely Yours, Rose Anne I. Is this love unconditional and will last for a lifetime? Absolutely! There is nothing as sure as my love for my mother. I love her for giving me life and sacrificing herself for our family. She is my hero, my friend, my constant companion, my shoulder to lean on, my source of inspiration, a big part of my life, my everything. She has been away from us for some years now. The least that I always do to make her feel that she is remembered and appreciated is to spend some time for an hour or two to talk about life every day. I am not a sweet talker, but I always thank her for the simple things she does for us. I will never get tired to listen to all her rants, even if she had told me those a hundred times already. I always tell her to think positive because I know how homesick she is for being away from us. She is also one of the biggest reasons why I am striving hard to study. I want to make her proud. This love is unconditional, and I know to myself that it will last for a lifetime. After Reading Activity 1. What picture is formed to your mind by the title “The Bewail of Mother”? I can imagine an image of a mother lamenting over her daughter being so cold and ungrateful towards her. 2. What kind of emotion did you feel in the poem? As I was reading, I felt sad for the mother being ignored by her daughter. She deserves attention and affection from her child, for whom she sacrificed a lot of things so that she could live a beautiful life. 3. What was used to symbolize the poet’s feeling? “Tears” symbolize the bewail of the mother towards her daughter. She was left clueless about why her child suddenly become ungrateful and cold with her. Tears may mean different things depending on the mood that prevails. In this poem, tears mean sadness and pain. 4. What figures of speech used in the poem? Does it appeal to your senses while reading the poem? Why or why not? “Why I cannot prevent my depressing tears. They are running over my cheeks.” “It seems a sharp knife is placed in my heart.” “Mother effort is always assigned to the daughter.” “What made her mind-changing?” “To hear sweet words saying here is my mother.” These lines from the poem are some forms of figurative language used, making the poem more appealing to the readers. This poem uses metonymy, in which substitute words or phrases are used for the thing meant. Upon reading the poem, it becomes easier to appreciate and feel what the poem wants to convey. 5. What are the words used to emphasize the grief of the writer? “Depressing tears,” “sharp knife placed in the mother’s heart,” “mother effort,” “mind-changing,” “even if she does not care, but mother still beg” – these are the words and phrases which emphasize the grief of the writer. Incorporating all these words into the poem highlights its theme. 6. What is the mood of the poem? Does it affect your mood also? Sadness is the mood that prevails in this poem. As a reader, I am easily swayed by the message of this poem. All of us can relate when the topic is about a mother, and we can quickly put ourselves onto it as we read it. Downloaded by Mary Eliza Lei Lumbera (leilumbera23@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|6783523 Republic of the Philippines BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ACCOUNTANCY BUSINESS ECONOMICS AND INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT CITE Building, Pablo Borbon Main 1, Rizal Avenue, Batangas City 7. In what line can we read the theme of the poem? “Mother effort is always assigned to daughter” – this line is the theme of this poem. It shows the relationship between the mother and her daughter and how she would be willing to sacrifice herself for her daughter’s sake. Sadly, as time passed, the daughter seemed to forget everything that her mother did for her, which left the mother in deep sorrow. 8. What impact lifted on you throughout reading the entire poem? This poem made me realize how my mother sacrificed her happiness, safety, security, and freedom to attend to our needs, especially to my needs, as the only daughter in the family. Reading the poem reminded me of my promise to myself to never make my mother cry. She is just too precious, and I cannot afford to hurt her in any way. 9. Comment on the last two lines of the poem. The last two lines, “When I die, I will not be boring. Since that word shown you accept the deed of your mother.” implies how deeply sorrowed the mother is that she thought death could change her situation. A simple appreciation is enough for her and for all mothers because they are not asking for anything huge or grand. Simple sweet words are enough to make them feel that they are loved and appreciated. 10. If you are the writer of this poem, craft the new title for it. Cite your reasons. “A Mother’s Sorrow.” This is the title that I would like the poem to have. Short and simple yet meaningful. The readers can easily relate themselves upon reading the title. The character in this poem is in anguish because of her disappointment and confusion why her daughter suddenly became ungrateful despite all the things she has given up and done for her. Do mosquitoes fly about between midnight and drawn? Are there mosquitoes in ice-bound or very dry desert areas? Do both male and female mosquitoes sting? What causes a mosquito's bite to itch: the sting or the mosquito’s saliva? Does the saliva keep the blood from clotting? Mosquitoes have six legs like other insects. They have a body clock similar to what humans have and just like other nocturnal beings whose body clocks wake them up at night to go hunt, the mosquitoes' do the same. Mosquitoes love wet places where they lay their eggs in puddles, birdbaths, and anywhere else they can find standing water. But dry weather can cause mosquito problems, too because their bites can increase after a single dry day. The reason that only female mosquitoes need blood is to help develop mosquito eggs. As a result, male mosquitoes do not possess a stinger within their proboscis, which would allow them to extract blood from the host. As a biting mosquito fills itself with blood, it injects saliva into your skin. Proteins in the saliva trigger a mild immune system reaction that results in the characteristic itching and bump. Yes, because saliva contains substantial amounts of tissue factor, which dramatically accelerates blood clotting. Post Reading Activity 1. Sum up the story explaining why mosquitoes are small insects. Mosquitoes are small because just like Nhan deep, she has little appreciation and love for her husband who is eager to give everything to her. Her quality is as little as the size of the mosquito. She likewise has little regard and thankfulness for all the penances Ngoe Tam did just to rejuvenate her once more. Besides, much the same as little mosquitoes, Nhan deep can't be seen or felt by her husband. Her adoration and thankfulness for Ngoe Tam are scarcely observed simply like how little mosquitoes are. It resembles she isn't existing and can't be seen by any means, since she shows no friendship and significance for her better half that she even disappeared with the rich dealer. That is the reason mosquitoes are little and are scarcely observed because it mirrors the character of Nhan deep. 2. Summarize the story explaining why mosquitoes whine and sting. Mosquitoes are whining because simply like Nhan deep, she handily concealed her preferences and desire from her better half. She appears to keep everything hidden from her own better half and doesn't need her to hear it. Besides, in the last piece of the story when Nhan deep at long last transformed into a mosquito, she articulated the name of her significant other in a voice bit by bit getting little. 3. Which is the most interesting part of the story? Why? Downloaded by Mary Eliza Lei Lumbera (leilumbera23@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|6783523 Republic of the Philippines BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ACCOUNTANCY BUSINESS ECONOMICS AND INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT CITE Building, Pablo Borbon Main 1, Rizal Avenue, Batangas City The most intriguing piece of the story is when Ngoe Tam met the genii of medication who is going on his wizardry mountain. I was truly stunned by the integrity of the genii to offer Ngoe Tam to be his devotee yet he rather decided to revive his significant other. I truly respect the generosity of the genii just as the affection and care of Ngoe Tam for his significant other Nhan deep. 4. What virtues are exhibited by Ngoe Tam? I truly perceived how dependable, adoring, and suffering spouse Ngoe Tam is to his better half. I felt how he truly values Nhan deep and he is eager to give everything even his blood just to make his better half return to life once more. I likewise perceive how suffering and ready to give up Ngoe Tam is, the point at which he chose to free Nhan deep seeing her cheerful carrying on with the existence she needed with the rich merchant. 5. Relate any Philippine folktales you know explaining the origin of mosquitoes. I can relate the origin of mosquitoes to the legend of guava. Why? Because just like in the origin of mosquitoes, in the legend of the banana the spirit turned to flesh and kissed the woman, who slept and woke in a beautiful golden bedroom. The spirit man was Baanna, he married Raja and had a son. Baanna know that it’s his time to return to the spirit world, on that day he went out and disappeared, all could Raja see was a bleeding heart. She picked it and planted it and the plant grew and bore a golden fruit, as golden as the golden bedroom she named it Baanna as an honor to Baanna. Here we can see how deeply in love the woman is, that she will do everything for her loved ones just to never forget him. Creating with Them Assume that you will audition in a drama club. With a partner, reenact your favorite scene in the tale. My favorite scene in the tale is when the Ngoe Tam wished to the genii to bring back the life of Nhan Deep, a frivolous and lazy girl. Here’s an excerpt from the tale where Ngoe Tam and the genii met. “…The genii said “Knowing of your virtue, I have placed my mountain on your path. If you wish. I will enroll you amongst my disciples” Ngoe Tam thanked him humbly but vowed he would never leave his wife and begged and genii to bring her to life again. The genii looked at him with kindness and pity in his eyes and said’ why do you cling to his life an illusion? What folly to trust being who is feeble and inconstant! I want to grand your wish but I hope that in time to come you will not regret its fulfillment.’’ Downloaded by Mary Eliza Lei Lumbera (leilumbera23@gmail.com) lOMoARcPSD|6783523 Republic of the Philippines BATANGAS STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ACCOUNTANCY BUSINESS ECONOMICS AND INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT CITE Building, Pablo Borbon Main 1, Rizal Avenue, Batangas City At his order, Ngoe Tam opened the coffin and cutting the end of his finger let three drops of blood fall onto the body of Nhan deep. She opened her eyes slowly as if awakening from a deep sleep. “Remember your duties, said the genii to her. “Think of what you owe your husband.” On a Personal Note Make a collage lifted from the theme of The Mosquito.
