This program will introduce students to the International Space Station and encourage them to make use of this rich scientific resource via the Internet. 1.1 Project Abstract The International Space Station (ISS) is a permanent space laboratory designed to allow humans to live and study in space. Requiring the collaboration of 16 nations and costing over $60 million, the ISS will take many years and 46 separate space flights to complete. Scientists aboard the space station will perform experiments that could lead to important breakthroughs in technology. Through Thoreau School in Space, younger students (grades K-3) will focus on communicating with the astronauts at the space station via the Internet, while older students (grades 4-6) will actually use data generated by the space station experiments in their own research projects. 2 PURPOSE AND KEY FUNCTIONS The primary goal of Thoreau School in Space is to prepare students to live and work in a world where technical skills are at a premium. The program will be available to all students in the Thoreau school district, but will target low-income families who would otherwise not have regular access to computers and the Internet. As illustrated in this chart, the majorities of Thoreau families has no computer at all, or are forced to make do with obsolete computers without Internet access. 3 CHARACTERISTICS OF EMPLOYEES IN THIS FIELD Thoreau School in Space will be coordinated by Peter Brooks. Peter is the Senior Math and Science Instructor at Thoreau Elementary and Middle School. He has managed the school’s computer lab for many years and is the founder of the Greater Middleton Astronomy Club, which now boasts over forty members. He earned his B.S. in Elementary Education at the University of Pennsylvania. As a member of the Mayor’s Page 1 of 5 Technology Task Force, he has spoken widely in the community on the need to provide a thorough Internet education to all students. Peter has spent the last 3 summers working on his Master’s in Education at Ohio State University. 4 TOP COMPANIES IN THIS FIELD The chart below shows computer ownership by family in the Thoreau School District by headings shown below: 4.1 Multiple computers 4.2 One computer 4.3 Obsolete computer 4.4 No computer The combination of speakers, field trips, and hands-on activities will encourage students to explore the link between space science and technology. In the process, they will become more experienced computer users. All of the activities associated with Thoreau School in Space will be coordinated with the National Science Education Curriculum Objectives, the International Technology Society Recommendations and the World Council on Science Education Standards. 5 5.1 CURRENT TRENDS IN THE INDUSTRY Space Exploration Through Thoreau School in Space teachers will be trained to use the great variety of information about the ISS that is currently available on the Web. In particular, teachers will become familiar with the Human Space Flight Web site published by NASA. Once this training has been completed students and parents will be invited to participate in learning workshops one evening each month. These sessions will provide hands-on opportunities to explore the Space Station via interactive Web sites. Thoreau School in Space will also give sixth graders experience in space science through field trips to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia Page 2 of 5 6 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS FIELD Thoreau School in Space is a science program that will reach more than 1000 students in grades K-6 at Thoreau Elementary and Middle School.
