Isn’t It Ironic? Don’t cha think? Time to learn/refresh yourself on IRONY! During this slideshow you will: ● define irony and its different types ● understand the differences between situational, verbal, and dramatic irony ● identify examples of irony What is IRONY? Irony: the contrast between appearance and reality— usually one in which reality is the opposite of what it seems There are 3 types of IRONY ★ Verbal: when someone knowingly exaggerates or says one thing and means another ★ Situational: when a contrast between what a reader/character EXPECTS to happen and what ACTUALLY happens ★ Dramatic: when the reader/viewer knows something that the characters DO NOT VERBAL IRONY Examples ★ I’ve been so busy these past few weeks. The stay at home order is exhausting! ★ “We try to be civilized here.”— General Zaroff in The Most Dangerous Game after we find out he hunts humans. SITUATIONAL IRONY Examples ★ I woke up at 8:00am and frantically got dressed and ready for school… I rushed out to the bus stop…then I realized we don’t go back until September. ★ In Monster’s Inc. when the Monsters scare children, but in fact the monsters are the ones afraid of the children. ★ In Frozen when we discovered that Prince Hans is…the villain! DRAMATIC IRONY Examples ★ In a scary movie, when we know that the killer is right behind her, but she is oblivious. ★ When Odysseus doesn’t tell his men about the bag of wind, so they end up opening it. Situational Irony-we expect the Chef to taste his own food, especially the ones he’s known for Figure It Out!! Determine the type of irony for each example. 1) A student who goes to the restroom every day during class asks the teacher if he can go. Her response is "Sure, it's not like we do anything important in this class." 2) Girl in a horror film hides in a closet where the killer just went. 3) In Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, we know that the old woman bringing the apple is the wicked queen who wants to kill Snow White. 4) In Beauty and the Beast, an animated Disney movie, Belle refuses to marry Gaston by saying "I just don't deserve you!" 5) In Macbeth, King Duncan says that he trusts Macbeth ("he was a gentleman on whom I built an absolute trust), but the audience knows that Macbeth is plotting to kill Duncan. 6) Crystal is trying to avoid a water gun fight that her brothers are having and she falls into a puddle. 7) Marcus is very upset over the fact that his brand new truck has a little speck of mud on the bumper, and Jennifer, who has a used car, says, "My goodness! That's a shame!" So...is it ironic?
