Medicine Walk Introduction 1. Pick at least one (but no more than 3) of the questions listed here and discuss briefly based on the information on the covers (title, images, summary, reviews). Write a paragraph that summarises your thoughts. What does the title suggest? Your thoughts on the inside cover/reviews? What can we guess about the narrator? Characters? What might be big ideas and social justice issues in this novel? What is the evidence for this so far? Guess where and when this novel is going to take place? What is your evidence? Will it be autobiographical? Why might we think this? Why are we reading this particular novel? What might we learn from it? 2. Close Reading Divide a blank sheet of paper into four quadrants (you may also do this typed) with the following headings: Characters Setting Vocabulary – words you don’t know/like the sound of/etc Phrases – any that interest you or otherwise provide a vivid 3. Summary Choose a page from the novel and summarise it as briefly as possible, keeping in mind the following question: What does the author want us to take away from this? Aim for a maximum of 2-3 sentences per paragraph. 4. Written Response Choose one of the questions listed below and write a 1-2 page (double spaced) response that answers your question, using specific quotations from the novel: Are the characters so far likeable or unlikeable? Who do you identify with most so far? Why? Use parenthetical citations to show where in the novel the quotations come from, as follows: “…hearing symphonies in wind across a ridge and arias in the screech of hawks…” (Wagamese, 4)
