We want to convey our heartfelt appreciation to all of our classmates and other FEU students who spent their valuable time assisting us in preparing for this interview and tentative project. We are incredibly grateful to Prof. Leonardo F. Cada Jr., our course professor, for leading us towards the best preparation for this project. We would love to express our gratitude that this analysis paper would not flourish without his guidance in our paper, considering the lack of time due to the limits of flexible learning. We are grateful for the learning experience that we have already had in virtual or online learning, and we are fortunate to have a hard-working leadership teacher. We want to express our appreciation to our interviewee, Ceo, Romano M. Quilloy, for answering our questions and providing us with ideas and advice during the interview. We are grateful for his time and for sharing the honest and informative insights on several themes related to our questions, which have contributed to forming a meaningful and influential paper. An honorable mention goes to our friends and family for their help and understanding in the execution of this project; without them, we can no longer complete it and face several issues in finishing each section of our Tentative paper. We would also like to thank our school, Far Eastern University, for providing this type of subject that allowed us to learn how to make plans, lead and develop what we need if we have a company. Finally, we would like to express our gratitude for all of our hard work on this project. Thank you for all of the member's time and support in creating our tentative and interview project; even with only virtual learning, we made it possible. Moreover, even though we have several tasks to complete, we have not given up, so let us be proud of ourselves and strive for greatness along our path. Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 10 | Page Transcript of The Interview November 07, 2021, (Sunday) 8pm Interview with Mr. Romano M. Quilloy Introduction: Ivan: Good evening, Mr. Quilloy! It is such a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for accepting our request for an interview despite the short notice. I’m Ivan Shane Intia and with me is groupmate Yuan: Yuan Logan. We are BSA Students from Far Eastern University and we’ll be your interviewers for tonight. (Start Recording) Ivan: Sir I would just like to inform you that you can use either english or filipino in answering the questions later. Mr Quilloy: Sige po, Sure salamat (All right, Sure thank you) Ivan: Let us now proceed Yuan Yuan: Okay Sir, before we proceed to the main questions po, can you give us a brief introduction about you and your company? Mr. Quilloy: Ah okay, yeah so, I’m Romano Quilloy I am use to be an employee of Uni packer then I started my company (thinking) maybe around 5 years ago our company is named VRTSYSTEMS operation and recession we cater to semiconductor electronics manufacturing industry so most of our products includes measurement and i have another company that is called VRTSYSTEMS Biotech this is the one for rice straws so I don’t know which company are you interested to understand. So, both of them are available. So, the other is electronics noh ibig sabihin nun lahat ng mga electronic equipment for example cellphone ay kailangan siya ma-itest ayun ang ginagawa namin. Yung isa naman biotech is meron kaming product rice straws so instead of plastic straws we have what we called rice straws which are exported from malaysia so replacement siya ng plastic straws. That is essentially our company. We are very small, all Filipinos, and one of our main goals or trust is to make sure that the Philippines is equipped with factories that are efficient with regard to manufacturing. (Okay, so my name is Romano Quilloy, and I used to work for Uni-packer before starting my company (thinking) maybe around five years ago. Our company is called VRTSYSTEMS operation and recession, and we cater to the semiconductor electronics manufacturing industry, so most of our products include measurement. I also own another firm, VRT SYSTEMS BIOTECH, which specializes in rice straws. So, I'm not sure which firm you'd be interested in learning more about. As a result, they're both available. So, the other is electronics, which means that all electronic equipment, such as telephones, must be checked, which we do. The second is that we have rice straws, which are exported from Malaysia and may be used instead of plastic straws, that is essentially our company. We are a small group of Filipinos whose primary goal is to guarantee that the Philippines has efficient manufacturing companies.) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 11 | Page Yuan: Thank you, Sir Ivan: Ah, so sir your business ah naka focus po siya on mitigating the effect of the pollution on earth po ganun po. (Ah, So, sir, your company is focused on reducing the effects of pollution on the environment, correct) Mr. Quilloy: If you're into that meron kaming a little bit portion of sa green electronics namin pero sige let’s focus. Ahm, I really want to understand saan ba yung direction ng discussion. Sorry I wasn't able to review the questions ah. (If you're interested in it, we offer a small selection of green gadgets, but for now, let's concentrate. Ah, I'm curious about the direction of the conversation. Sorry I wasn't able to review the questions ah.) Ivan: Sige sir, ah mainly focuses on thee about sa leadership and how you manage your business sir yun po. (All right, sir, ah is primarily concerned with your leadership and how you operate your business.) Mr. Quilloy: Ah okay let me be just use yung VRT SYSTEMS Biotech na company namin. (Okay, let me just utilize our company's VRT SYSTEMS BIOTECH.) Ivan: Okay Sir Mr. Quilloy: Yung company namin na yun the main goal is to make sure that the earth is green, sustainable, and eco-friendly. (Our company's major purpose is to ensure that the environment is green, sustainable, and eco-friendly.) Question and answer portion: Ivan Intia: So, sir, for the first question. Do you do regular planning for your business? Mr. Quilloy: Well, some do sa electronics company now we are doing regular planning every year we have what we called kick-off. Pero for the Biotech Company I want to be as informal as possible so we have very little business planning but of course the directions are coming directly from me and I am just scheding it directly towards my employees. (Well, some do in electronics companies now, and we do regular planning every year, which we call kick-off. But for the Biotech Company, I want to be as informal as possible, so we have very little business planning, but of course, the directives are coming directly from me, and I am simply scheduling it directly towards my staff.) Ivan: Okay Sir. Mr. Quilloy: (follow up answer) In our planning in electronics we ocean planning yung isa naman parang plan as we go. (In our electronics we do ocean planning, then in another one we plan as we go.) Ivan: Okay so we understood po. (Okay, we understand sir) Yuan: So next po sir, in our university, we have core values of Fortitude, Excellence or Uprightness, do you also have certain values that you and your employees must follow and observe in your business operation? (So next sir, in our university, we have core values of Fortitude, Excellence or Uprightness, do you also have certain values that you and your employees must follow and observe in your business operation?) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 12 | Page Mr. Quilloy: Oh, sure yeah, we have core values in fact I will send you yung aming company profile so that you’ll have understanding on our core values. So, we have several, we have seven high level outputs etc. But i want it to half one of those which is having a malasakit mentality that is one of our core values. If you want it to understand more it actually yung malasakit diba sa tagalog word it doesn't have direct english translation diba familiar kayo diba ano ba english ng malasakit diba compassion diba care. (Yes, we have core values; in fact, I will provide you with our company profile so that you can understand our core values. So we have several, seven high-level outputs, and so on. But I'd want it to be half of those who have a "malasakit" mindset, which is one of our key principles. If you want to know more about it, "malasakit" is a Tagalog term that does not have a straight English translation; nevertheless, if you are familiar with the English word for it, it is compassion and care.) Ivan: Yes po (yes) Mr. Quilloy: Pero alam natin as a Filipino compassion and care will not cut it, it is like a little bit lesser kumpara dun sa malasakit diba ang malasakit make sure offering almost sacrificing your life diba so sabi ko dapat isa sa core values ng company namin is having malasakit mentality like if the company is going down everyone is willing to sacrifice their time and effort to make sure the company will continue pa rin. So that is one of the core values among six others there are six more pero baka mahaba na kwentuhan natin (laugh). (But, as Filipinos, we know that compassion and caring are nothing in comparison to "malasakit"; after all, "malasakit" entails virtually giving your life, doesn't it? "Malasakit" mindset, in which if the company is failing, everyone is prepared to sacrifice their time and effort to ensure that the company survives. So that is one of the essential principles, along with six others; there are six more, but we could go on for a long time (laugh).) Ivan: Yes Sir Yuan: It is a great message sir ang ganda po (It's a great message, sir.) Mr. Quilloy: I will send our company profile so you will have a better understanding. Ivan: Yes sir, thank you for that. Your company profile will be very helpful for us and yung malasakit mentality i say that it is a great a what do you call this core value because it also reflects your goal for the business like yung gusto niyo pong mangyari gamit yung business niyo. (Yes, sir, and thank you. Your company profile will be extremely useful for us and the "malasakit" attitude. I think that it is great what you call this core value since it also shows your business aim, such as what you want to happen with your firm.) Mr. Quilloy: Yes Ivan: Thank you sir for our next question, engaging in business entails a lot of investments in terms of money, time and sacrifices. Despite all these investments, still many have failed in their business ventures, especially this pandemic, based on your experiences. What kind of adjustments or planning did you do to ensure that your business overcome the challenges the pandemic brought to us? Mr.Quilloy:We are not really overcame yung challenges if you talking about VRTSYSTEMS Biotech the reason i said that is that we are still in the midst of pandemic even though it is Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 13 | Page really slowing down it really isn’t yung talagang flatten na yung curve and the challenge with VRTSYSTEMS Biotech is our main product which is rice straws cater to those who heavily affected of the covid diba kasi ang main customers namin is yung restaurants, hotel, resorts and most of which are shut down because of the pandemic and to be honest we are devastated about the situation but the good thing about our company is that we had to take things very slow so i mention kanina yung resources noh. We use tatlong T’s to identify our resources. What are does? Our resources are Time, Talent and treasure. So, all these three T in resources we make sure that we manage it efficiently by making sure yung time naming is very efficient. We do not work hard. We work smart tapos yung talent naman namin is as long as yung competence level ng lahat ng employees namin is at far or even better with regard into their character. So, sa company namin we owner's character is a little bit better than competence. So that is what the talent that I am really looking at. Mataas yung character rather than competence and third when i mention about the treasure diba yung investment in money ginawa namin we ordered one whole box of fortified container mga 1.75 million worth of straws ngayon nasa inventory lang namin because we are not really executed yung plano because of the pandemic. So, when you ask me how do we manage to make sure that we overcame yung pandemic we haven't we are still struggling, but so far we are contract most of our competitors died already meaning they close their shop already so at least we already to found that it is a little bit better so that is actually what we did. (We do not overcome the challenges if you are talking about VRTSYSTEMS Biotech because we are still in the midst of a pandemic and even though it is slowing down it is not the one that flattened the curve and the challenge with VRTSYSTEMS Biotech is that our main product, rice straws, cater to those who are heavily affected by the covid because our main customers are restaurants, hotels, resorts, and most of which are closed down because of the covid. To be honest, we are devastated by the scenario, but the wonderful thing about our firm is that we have to do things gently, as I mentioned recently. To identify our resources, we employ three T's. What exactly are they? Time, Talent, and Treasure are our resources. So, we make sure that we manage all three Ts in resources properly by making sure that our time is highly efficient. We do not work hard; we work smart and our talent is as long as all of our employees' competency levels are far or even superior in terms of their character. So, in our organization, the employee's character is somewhat more important than competence. So that is the ability I am most interested in. The character is more important than competence, and third, when I mention the treasure, I may be referring to the financial investment we made when we ordered one whole box of the fortified container, which is approximately 1.75 million worth of straws, but we only have it in our inventory because we did not execute the plan due to the pandemic. So, when you ask me how we managed to ensure that we overcame the pandemic, I tell you that we haven't, that we're still struggling, but that most of our competitors have died, which means that they've closed their doors, so at least we've discovered that it's a little bit better, and that's exactly what we did.) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 14 | Page Ivan: I see sir and it is a good thing rin po na like restaurants and hotels are slowly opening na po for example yung tagaytay slowly opening their hotels. (I see, sir, and it's good that restaurants and hotels are opening, such as those in Tagaytay.) Mr. Quilloy: Yeah, alert level 2 na tayo ngayon and 70 percent especially for vaccinated people 70 percent na yung accommodation so meron na kaming malaking order ngayon from shell so good thing. (Yeah, we're at alert level 2 currently, and 70 percent of the accommodation, particularly for vaccinated people, so we've had a large order from Shell, which is a good thing.) Ivan: Yes sir Mr Quilloy: Sana don’t spread this interview pala to may competitor’s ah baka malaman nila (Laugh). (I hope you don't broadcast this interview to my competitors; they could find out (Laugh).) Ivan: Yes, sir this interview only be used for our... Yuan: Final requirement po sir Mr. Quilloy: One of my weaknesses kasi iam very transparent so nalalaman niyo lahat including secrets baka malaman niyo lahat from me (laugh). (One of my weaknesses is that I am very transparent, so you know everything, including secrets, and you may have known everything from me (laugh).) Ivan: Don't worry sir your secret will be safe Mr. Quilloy: Sige, may trust naman ako guys sa inyo so go ahead (All right, I trust you guys so go ahead.) Yuan: Okay Sir for next question. Besides that, do you think it is a reality that not everyone is destined to be a successful entrepreneur? Why? Why not? Mr. Quilloy: I don’t believe that, who said that Yuan: (Laugh) Mr. Quilloy: Kasi sabi nila yun nga, lagi ko naririnig yan that not everyone is destined to become an entrepreneurs noh, actually maybe it is because of passion, i don't really know pero what i really do know is If entrepreneurs is really passionate what are they doing (cut) actually everyone is really especially in the Philippines pag sinabi mo mahilig sa music talagang mahilig sa music. So, I don't really believe that entrepreneurs are born or made something like that. Everyone is capable of being one of entrepreneurs in fact kapag nag convince ka as a normal individual nag co-convince ka to another person ng idea, you’re essentially selling you are an entrepreneur diba. So, everyone is destined to become an entrepreneur. The path they choose or everyone chooses is in the different path right, working but i rather suggest especially you young once like lalo na ngayon yung mga online selling etc. Start doing entrepreneurial business selling and things like that. Kasi being an entrepreneur is really a good thing. (Because they say, actually I always hear that not everyone is meant to become an entrepreneur, I don't know if it's because of passion, but what I do know is that if entrepreneurs are enthusiastic about what they do (cut), everyone especially in the Philippines when that individual say they Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 15 | Page love the music they really love to play music. So, I don't think that entrepreneurs are born or created in this way. Everyone has the potential to be an entrepreneur; in fact, when you persuade a regular person to buy the concept you're essentially selling, you are an entrepreneur. As a result, everyone is born with the ability to become an entrepreneur. Just that the road they pick, or that everyone chooses, is on a different path, working. But I would rather encourage young people nowadays, online selling, etc. Begin your entrepreneurial journey by selling and doing other comparable activities. Because being an entrepreneur is beneficial.) Yuan: Sa tingin niyo po sir, mahirap ba ngayon mag patayo ng business kahit small lang na ngayong pandemic. (Sir, do you believe that it is tough to create or develop a business, even if it is a small business type? In the midst of a pandemic.) Mr. Quilloy: Akala ko mahirap noh, i will give you an example. This guy started baking cookies lang diba, baking cookies then selling them online. Meron din akong kaibigan na yung pamangkin niya 17 years old naghahanda lang ng takoyaki ngayon his earning 30 thousand pesos a month tapos ang maganda pa nun yung trabaho niya start at 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m in the morning ganun lang. So especially dun sa nangyari nakita niyo yung business dynamic change when there was a pandemic noh. Dati magpalipat ka from one place to another mag hire ka ng jeep pati naghahakot pag memeryendahin mo sila gagastos ka ng 3,000 pesos now that there is transportify babayaran mo lang ng 150 pesos lilipat na lahat ng gamit mo from one place in another. So, see climate changing kaya nga sabi nila is ngayon ang pinaka maganda to become entrepreneur and hindi mahirap maging entrepreneur. Kaso kailangan lang talaga yun ang passion mo maging entrepreneur not to become an employee diba. Sana wala sa inyong maging employee for life. (laugh) (I thought it was hard, so I'll give you an example: this guy started baking cookies and then selling them online. I also have a friend whose nephew is 17 years old and works solely cooking takoyaki. He earns 30 thousand pesos each month, and the best part is that he starts work from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in an instant. So, especially in what happened, you saw how the business dynamic changed when there was a pandemic. You used to rent a jeep and a helper and pay 3,000 pesos to transfer your stuff from one location to another; however, thanks to transportify, you will just pay 150 pesos to move all of your goods from one location to another. So see climate change, so they say that now is the perfect time to become an entrepreneur and that it is not difficult to be an entrepreneur. In that case, you need your passion to be an entrepreneur, not to become an employee, right? I hope none of you become employees for life.) (laugh) Yuan: Yes po, Sir (Yes, Sir) Mr. Quilloy: Sana mainspired ko kayong mag negosyo rin. (I hope i inspired all you to do business) Ivan: Yes sir you are already inspiring us, so far for me Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 16 | Page Mr. Quilloy: Ganoon ba, Sige thank you ivan ah. Sige, ano pa meron pa ba, marami pa bang naka line up na questions or tapos na.(Oh really, Okay thank you ivan. All right, what else, are there many more questions lined up or is it over.) Ivan : Ah! meron pa po sir ( Ah! there is more, Sir) Mr.Quilloy: Sige lang go ahead. (Okay, Go Ahead) Ivan: Employees are also just human and human[s] tend(s) to make mistakes. In your business operation, how do you handle, treat or punish your employees when they made [make] a mistake? Ivan: Employees are also just human and human[s] tend(s) to make mistakes. In your business operation, how do you handle, treat or punish your employees when they made [make] a mistake? Mr. Quilloy: Okay I- I immediately terminate them if they make…[no] I’m just kidding, I’m just kidding [laughs] Interviewers: [laughs] Mr. Quilloy: [inaudible words] Okay…okay uhmm I-I…how do I-I simplify this? Okay of course people are human… ‘di ba? And humans make mistakes… Ang challenge ko kasi, I’m really irritated with the person that does the same mistake more than two times… same mistake ha ([inaudible words] Okay…okay uhmm I-I…how do I-I simplify this? Okay of course people are human… ‘right? And humans make mistakes… My challenge is, I’m really irritated with the person that does the same mistake more than two times…more than two times) Ivan: [nods] Mr. Quilloy: alam niyo ang Germans love mistakes… kasi especially when you do events processes or you do processes, ang problema sa isip mo if yung processes na ginawa mo perfect na, pero when it’s executed there are flaws and there are mistakes. And mistakes to Germans are like gold nuggets. Gustong gusto nila yan pag may nagkakamali… Why did you make a Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 17 | Page mistake kasi then mangyayari is gagawin yung PDCA which is Plan, Do, Check, A… and then mangyayari is they would make the process would never - be - will never have the same mistakes again kaya naiimprove yung process and yung process is- ang processes are made to become seamless no? you know what seamless is ‘di ba? Yung walang gaps parang almost perfect. Pero there’s no such thing as perfect process ‘di ba? So, mistakes are bound to happen. Understand? Ngayon, if there are mistakes that are done, b-by my employees, we do not punish them. or if there are good things that are done by my employees, we do not actually reward them. Kasi, naniniwala kami na yung reward and punishment or yung tinatawag nilang carrot and sticks is no longer working [a]no? Hindi ganyan. Ang motivation ngayon ng mga employees hindi because you are rewarded if you are doing good things, or you’re punished if you’re doing bad things pangit na form of motivation yun. Alam niyo magandang form of motivation? Have you heard of that? S-sa s-sa sinulat ni ahh u-uhmm Dan Pink(s) - sa kanyang book- ang pinakamagandang motivation especially for millennials and gen z, gen x, ay yung tinatawag na inspiration. So, sa amin kapag may employee kami na nagkamali once or a mistake that’s done or an incident once, we are making sure that they are inspired. No, we…we…we make sure that they understand that this mistake is okay [inaudible] we had that mistake so that we will learn ‘di ba? Sometimes, yung mistake na yun ang tuition fee is very high, halimbawa nagkamali ka ng shipment, nalugi ang kompanya ng 5000 dollars, no? Sometimes masama yun no, pero sometimes mabuti rin yun kasi baka mamaya maprevent mo yung more 5000 dollars from happening ‘di ba? Ang ayoko lang mangyari Ivan and yo- the rest is…merong nagkamali, kunwari nadapa siya sa balon [inaudible] tapos on the following day nadapa nanaman siya, same mistake. Siguro twice is still acceptable pero nadaanan nanaman niya hindi niya natandaan, he never learns from his mistake tas (tapos) nadapa nanaman siya, then I will be very aah…hindi naman very mad, hindi ako magiging very angry but I will be very disappointed. And I will bet let the employee know that I am disappointed. Hindi ba sabi ko kanina inspiration ‘di ba? So, they look up to me, they are inspired sa leader nila tapos nakita nila yung leader nila is disappointed about what happened. How would you feel Ivan ‘di ba pag – parang naiinspire ka sakanya tapos nadisappoint mo siya parang ang sama sama ng ano mo… mas masama pa nga yun kesa pagalitan ka ‘di ba? So that is actually what our culture does to our employees so we never- we never punish them or we don’t- yung rewards, happens naturally. Ibig sabihin hindi siya uhhm…certain rewards meron silang commission [inaudible] certain sale so that’s normal. Pero, we do not use that as motivational tool. We use that- ang motivational tool naming is inspiration. Okay?... (You know, Germans love mistakes… especially when you do events processes or you do processes, the problem is in your mind, the process that you did was already perfect, but when it’s exceuted, there are flaws and there are mistakes. And mistakes to Germans are like gold nuggets. They really like it when someone commits a mistake. Why did you make a mistake? Because from then PDCA which is Plan, Do, Check, A will be done and then they will never have the same mistakes again that’s why the process is being improved and processes are made to become seamless right? You know what seamless is right? There’s Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 18 | Page like no gaps and it is almost perfect. But there’s no such thing as perfect process, right? So, mistakes are bound to happen. Understand? Now, if there are mistakes that are done, by my employees, we do not punish them. Or if there are good things that are done by my employees, we do not actually reward them. because I believe that reward and punishment or what others call “carrot and sticks” is no longer working right? It’s not it. The motivation of employees now is not because you are rewarded if you are doing good things, or you’re punished if you’re doing bad things. It’s an ugly form motivation. Do you know what a good form of motivation is? Have you heard of that? According to what Dan Pink has written on his his book, the greatest motivation especially for millennials and gen z, gen x, is what you call inspiration. So, to us if someone made a mistake once or a mistake that’s done or an incident once, we are making sure that they are inspired. We make sure that they understand that this mistake is okay [inaudible] we had that mistake so that we will learn ‘right? Sometimes, that mistake includes a very high tuition fee. For example, you made a mistake in the shipment and the company losses 5000 dollars. Sometimes it is not good, but sometimes it is beneficial for it may prevent further losses of 5000 dollars from happening right? What I don’t want to happen Ivan and the rest is if someone commited a mistake, for example some tripped in a well [inaudible] then the following day he tripped again, same mistake. Maybe twice is still acceptable but if we passed through it again and forgotten it, he never learns from his mistake then he tripped again, then I will be very…not very mad, I’m not going to be very angry but I will be very disappointed. And I will bet, let the employee know that I am disappointed. Didn’t I say earlier inspiration ‘isn’t it? So, they look up to me, they are inspired by their leader, then they’ll see that he is disappointed about what happened. How would you feel about Ivan right? If you are inspired by him then you’ve disappointed him, it’s like you feel displeasure a lot worse than being scolded right? So, that is actually what our culture does to our employees so we never- we never punish them or we don’t- rewards, happens naturally. Meaning it’s not…certain rewards commission [inaudible] certain sale so that’s normal. But we do not use that as a motivational tool. We use that- our motivational tool is inspiration. Okay?...) Ivan: [nods] Mr. Quilloy: I hope I was able to answer it… Ivan: Yes sir Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 19 | Page Mr. Quilloy: as clearly as possible, ‘no (*right)? I am trying to make sure that you guys understand it. Very simple yung gestation nung submission ‘di ba? (the gestation of submission is very simple right?) Ivan: Yes sir…It’s very important din po talaga na you learn from our mistakes because…mistakes aah- mistakes help us grow aah- to a better person Mr. Quilloy: Correct…Uhm ang problema kasi sa mistakes, if mistakes are like parang miscourages other than inspires yun ang problema ‘di ba? Nagkamali ka, nadiscourage ka. Aand there are companies na ang environment is very harsh. Kapag nagkamali ka, you will be penalized. So ang problema doon sa amin is ang analysis may paralysis. Napaparalyze yung employee kapag ganaon yung environment so I don’t want to have that environment in our company. (Correct…the problem with mistakes is that, if mistakes discourage other than inspires it will be a problem, right? You commit a mistake then you’ll be discouraged, and there are companies that have environments that are very harsh. If you make a mistake, you will be penalized. So, the problem with us is that the analysis has paralysis. With that, the employee is being paralyzed so I don’t want to have that environment in our company.) Ivan: Your employees are very lucky sir [laughs] Logan: Ah sir ano (*if) … Mr. Quilloy: We are blessed and happy[laughs] Logan: kung gusto niya maging [inaudible] or k-kung gusto niya maging entrepreneur, hindi dapat siya magsesettle for rewards. Dapat ‘di ba ano d- ‘di nila kailangan isipin yung rewards y-yun nga dapat inspiration… (If he/she wants to be [inaudible] or if he/she wants to be an entrepreneur, he/she must not settle for rewards. He/she must not think about the rewards. Because it should be inspiration) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 20 | Page Mr. Quilloy: I am not saying that Yuan, rewards should be natural…should be natural- para siyang fruit ‘di ba sa isang puno. Kailan ba namumunga ang puno? Sige I-I’ll ask you a question. Kailan namumunga ang puno? (I am not saying that Yuan rewards should be natural…should be natural – like a fruit in a tree, right? When do trees bear fruit? Okay, I-I’ll ask you a question. When do trees bear fruit?) Logan: Kailan… (*When…) Mr. Quilloy: So kapag healthy-ng healthy siya, sobra sobra na yung nutrients na prinoproduce niya, kaya siya nagkakaroon ng fruits di’ba? So, rewards should be natural resource (So, if it’s very healthy and the nutrients it produces were overflowing, it is then it will produce a fruit, right? So, rewards should be natural resource) Logan: Yes po... Mr. Quilloy:…of the motivation na sinasabi ko. Everyone is inspired, lahat inspired to do their work, magiging passionate sila to what they are doing, they will pump up so many nutrients na magiging fruitful na yung kompanya. So, again I am saying na hindi ako nagbibigay ng rewards, kasi rewards will come naturally. ‘Di ba parang puno. Kapag mas aah- nutritious na nutritious yung puno, kahit anong pigil mo, mamumunga at mamumunga yan. ‘Di ba parang ganyan. T-that’s another lesson I wanted to teach some other time may bayad siya, 70, 000 ang tuition. [laughs] I’m just kidding, biro lang (…of the motivation that I have said, everyone is inspired, they are all inspired to do their work, they will become passionate about what they are doing, they will pump up so many nutrients that it will cause the company to be fruitful. So, again I am saying that I don’t give rewards, because rewards will come naturally. Right? Just like a tree. The more nutritious the tree is, whatever hold you do, it will always bear fruit. Just like that. T-that’s another lesson I wanted to teach some other time, and it has a fee of 70, 000 as tuition. [laughs] I’m just kidding, just a joke) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 21 | Page Interviewers: *laughs Mr. Quilloy: Nagegets niyo ba? (Are you getting it?) Ivan: Yes Sir Jhenean: Yes Sir Logan: Yes po, yes po Logan: Aaah - sir so next question…sir how do you lead your employees to keep them (ayon) motivated and competent in their work while supporting their personal career growth? Mr. Quilloy: I-I’ll answer that question with an example. I have this employee. S-sa ngayon, sobrang busy ko kasi I’m handling two companies. So, I have this employee his name is…let’s hide his name under Paolo [laughs] one of my employees. Nakita ko sakanya, meron siyang leadership skills and a good leader should have — alam niyo, ang definition ng magaling na leader, is they create other leaders as well. So nakikita ko sa employee ko na ‘to na maganda ang leadership potential. [Ang] ginawa ko, I enrolled him to another mentor. I- yung company naming paid for his tuition ngayon, every night merong nagtuturo sakanya. And yun – yoon ang naging motivation niya at natuwa siya because yung company is concerned of [about] his career development rather than the company’s personal gain. So, sa ganyan – meron din kaming every Monday, aaah Yuan—H-how should I call you? Yuan ba? (I-I’ll answer that question with an example. I have this employee. These days, I’m so busy because I am handling two companies. So, I have this employee whose name is…let’s hide his name under Paolo [laughs] one of my employees. I have seen that he has leadership skills [that] a good leader should have — you know, the definition of a good leader – (is) they create other leaders as well. To what I am seeing with this employee of mine, he has great leadership potential. And what I did is I enrolled him in another mentor. I- our Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 22 | Page company paid for his tuition now, and every night someone’s been teaching him. And thatthat has become his motivation and he is joyed because the company is concerned (of) [about] his career development, rather than the company’s personal gain. So, there’s that – we also have every Monday, aaah Yuan—H-how should I call you? Is it Yuan?) Logan: Yes po, yes po. Yuan Mr. Quilloy: Oh…so every Monday Yuan, yung company naming meron kaming tinatawag na Monday morning motivation… Oh iba – ano yan parang spiritual motivation. W-we have two hours of o-our meeting time start [ing] from 8:43 until 10:43… Aaah ano yon meron kaming invited na isa sa amin magsasalita about the bible- kwento about yung verse tapos bakit kami nakaka – bakit nakakaencourage yung verse nay un and we share it to all the the employees, no? From 8:43 to 10:43 yun so, isa yun sa paraan to make sure that hindi lang yung kanilang career is taken cared of pero yung kanilang spiritual life as well. (Oh…so every Monday Yuan, our company has this what we call Monday morning motivation… Oh different – it is like a spiritual motivation. W-we have two hours of o-our meeting time starting [ing] from 8:43 until 10:43… Aaah we have invited someone – one from us to talk about the bible, story about the verse, then the reason why – why it encourages and we share it to all the employees, right? It’s from 8:43 to 10:43…So, that’s one of the ways to make sure that it’s not only their career that is taken care of, but their spiritual life as well.) Logan: Nakakatuwa naman sir ano pa rin kay God kahit papaano (It’s so gladdening sir that somehow it still relates to God) Mr. Quilloy: Oo because we honor the Lord at naniniwala kami na lahat ng blessings comes directly from God. We are just His-His instrument ‘di ba? (Yes, because we honor the Lord and we believe that all blessings come directly from God. We are just His-His instruments, aren’t we? Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 23 | Page Ivan: Uhhm so for the next question aaah - sir, what drives you to continue your business? For example, is it because of passion aah, to become rich aah, to help make this world a better place, etc.? aah it depends sir Mr. Quilloy: aaah that’s a very nice question aah salamat for asking aah- I really do not know yung totoong – parang sinasabi mo what drives me – what wakes me up in the morning ‘di ba? (Aaah – that’s a very nice question aah thank you for asking aahh- I really do not know the truth – it’s like you’re asking what drives me – what wakes me up in the morning, right?) Ivan: Yes, po sir- something like that sir Mr. Quilloy: So meron akong boss dati aaa-again, I’ll answer your question with an example. Meron akong boss dati ang pangalan niya is aah si Sir Dodong Dakamando kasamahan ko. Itago natin siya sa pangalang Dodong Dakamando- dami niyo ng naki-lalaman sa akin (So, I have a boss then…a-again, I’ll answer your question with an example. I have a boss then, his name is uhmm…Sir Dodong Dakamando, my fellow. Let’s hide him under the name Dodong Dakamando… you’re learning a lot from me…) Ivan: [Laughs] Mr. Quilloy: Uhmm yung boss ko na ito is my boss at Juliet Packard Tapings Incorporate tapos I- parang fresh aah-ang first job ko is Juliet Packard…palagi niyang sinasabi sa akin tuwing umaga tuwing dumarating ako, “Romano kamusta ka na” at tuwing tinatawagan niya ako parang ang lungkot ko lagi. Sabi niya- sabi niya “Romano good morning, how are you? Ano? Kamusta ka na diyan etc.” parang ang lungkot ko lagi. Sinasabi niya alam mo, isa problema mo is you’re always demotivated…parang ganyan. So why can’t you start your morning by…being happy ‘di ba? Uuhm starting your day fresh etc. Parang pwedeng magmeditate or do something and then, that really changed me noong unang una palang na nagtrabaho ako parang sa inyo, after graduation bagong trabaho. So, I applied at techtronics I was rejected then I tried with Juliet Packard, dati yung HP hindi pa naman siya parang second year pa lang siya. Ngayon, sikat na sikat na ang HP pero I-I-I applied with Juliet Packard at yung in-applyan kong position, yung Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 24 | Page pinakamababa, tagatiklop lang ng sulat. And then I was accepted and I was very happy, no? and then yun nga [inaudible]. So, what really wakes me up in the morning, dati kasi noong wala pa akong asawa, ang motivation ko is masustain lang yung-yung sarili ko. Yung mga gagastusin ko, hindi na poproblemahin ng magulang ko, yung mga gamit. Now that I am happily married- happily married, I have uhmm…konti lang mga anak ko walo lang anak ko. (Uhmm this boss of mine at Juliet Packard Tapings Incorporate then…I-my first job ko is [at] Juliet Packard…he always tells me every morning every time I arrive, “Romano how are you?” and every time he calls me, it always feels like I am downhearted. He tells “Romano good morning, how are you? What? How are you there, etc.” because it always feels like I’m down. He said, “You know, your problem is you’re always demotivated” …something like that. So why can’t you start your morning by…being happy ‘right? Uuhm starting your day fresh etc. It seems like you can meditate or do something and that really changed me when I started at my job. Just like you, after graduation before working. The first place I applied to… so that you’ll also be inspired, I immediately thought of the biggest companies and I didn’t really want to target small companies. I immediately applied to the biggest companies and maybe, there might be a chance that I will be accepted. So, I applied at techtronics, I was rejected then I tried with Juliet Packard…HP then, is not that— because it’s still in its second year. Now, HP has become known but, I applied at Juliet Packard and the position I applied into is the lowest position – letter folder. And then, I was accepted and I was very happy. And then, [inaudible]. So, what really wakes me up in the morning? —then when I was still a bachelor, my motivation was to sustain myself. My expenses must not be problemed by my parents anymore – these things. Now that I am happily married- happily married, I have uhmm…only a few children…I have eight children.) Ivan: [laughs] Mr. Quilloy: I have eight kids sa isang ba- sa isang asawa lang pero ngayon, ang motivation ko whenever I wake up is alam ko na paggising ko, yung gagawin ko, will directly affect my family. Lahat ng success ko will direct to them. Hindi lang yun, yung pamilya ko rin sa kompanya namin, yung lahat ng employees naming, we treat them as family. Ang tawag namin, if you are VRT System’s today, VRT System’s for life unless magpa-ampon ka sa iba. (I have eight kids with only one wife. But now, my motivation whenever I wake up is that I know when I wake up, what I will do will directly affect my family. All of my success will be directed to them. and not only that, but also family in our company – all our employees, Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 25 | Page we treat them as family. Just like what we call, if you are VRT System’s today, VRT System’s for life unless you’ll be adopted.) Logan: Tama nga sir (That’s right sir) Mr. Quilloy: so magiging anak kita forever unless, ayaw mo na talaga. Sabi mo magpapaampom ako sa iba. Maglalayas na ako. Ca-cancelin ko na ang ating relationship. So that’s the only way I will let go of you. Pero kahit na palpak na palpak na palpak ka, titiisin pa rin naming kasi naniniwala kami na everyone has certain genius inside of them. So, what wakes me up in the morning, come to think of it na realize ko na… may time limit pa pala ano? (So, you’ll be my child forever unless you don’t really want it anymore. You’ll say that you’re getting adopted by others and you’ll leave, and that you’re cancelling our relationship. So that’s the only way I will let go of you. But despite your frequent failure, we will still endure you for we believe that everyone has a certain genius inside of them. So, what wakes me up in the morning, come to think of it, that I have realized… oh there’s a time limit?) Ivan: Yes sir Mr. Quilloy: Kaya pala ako excited na gumising is marami akong napoprovide na opportunity. Nasusustain ko yung aming pamilya, totoong pamilya ko, at tsaka aking company family ko. And then nakakatulong din sa mga kachurch naming so yung church naming dito eh- so ayyung motivation ko pala is my family. My church family, my work family, and my real family. Ngayon ko lang narealize yun. Pinarealize niyo sa akin. (That’s why I’m so excited to wake up because I am able to provide a lot of opportunities. I am able to sustain my family – my real family and my company family. And then, I am also able to help our church here – so, it turned out that my motivation is my family - my church family, my work family, and my real family. It’s just now that I realized that. You made me realize it.) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 26 | Page Ivan: [laughs] Thank you sir! Mr. Quilloy: I think we’re running out of time ‘no (*right?)? Ivan: Yes sir Mr. Quilloy: You’ll ask me questions pa ba? Ivan: Aah yes sir Mr. Quilloy: [inaudible sound] Ivan: I think nawala si sir (I think sir disappeared) Logan: Five questions po… next question sir. How do you separate personal and business matters? What’s your indication for those boundaries and limitations? Mr. Quilloy: uhmmm I have a unique answer ‘no. hindi ako naniniwala na there is a separation between personal and yung career. Naririnig ko lagi yung sinsabi na aaahh…” trabaho lang ito walang personalan” ’no? naririnig niyo ba yan? Yung walang personalan – trabaho lang ito walang personalan? Ako hindi naniniwala roon kasi kagaya ng sinabi ko sa inyo, yung – my work family, is my family. So ibig sabihin, as long as you’re performing your job, you don’t have any problems with other aspects of your life. Hindi ko papakialaman yung personal mong buhay. (Uhm, I have a unique answer. I don’t believe that there is a separation between personal and career. I always hear people saying aah…” Don’t make it personal, it's just a job” right? Have you heard of it? don’t make it personal – this is just a job and not a personal matter? I don’t believe that because, just like what I have said earlier, my – my work family Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 27 | Page is my family. So, meaning, as long as you’re performing your job, you don’t have any problems with other aspects of your life. I won’t meddle in your personal life.) Logan: [nods] Mr. Quilloy: Pero-pero kapag lagi kang nalelate, lagi kang [inaudible], I will ask him further, I will ask my employee bakit? Bakit ganyan meron ka bang problema sa misis mo? May problema – baka I could do something about it. So, sabi ko sa mga employees ko, if you want me to stay out of your personal lives, then perform your work better, do your job well para hindi ko na kailangang pasukin yung personal lives ninyo…pero kapag nahihirapan ang kompanya because of your- naapektuhan na yung work life mo because of your personal life, then I will start into digging deeper, and find out how to help you. Para malaman ko lang if you really still want to stay, while you’re having problems ‘di ba? (But-but if you’re always being late [inaudible], I will ask him further, I will ask my employee, why? Why are you like that, do you have a problem with your wife? Do you have problems – maybe I could do something about it. So, I said to my employees, if you want me to stay out of your personal lives, then perform your work better, do your job well so that I won’t meddle with your personal lives…but if the company is burden because of your personal life, then I will start into digging deeper, and find out how to help you. So that I’ll know if you really still want to stay, while you’re having problems, right?) Logan: Yes Mr. Quilloy: Whatever, kung ano man ang issues na yun. So, to answer your question correctly, I do not believe that there is separation between personal at tsaka yung-yung work… (Whatever, the issues were. So, to answer your question correctly, I do not believe that there is separation between personal and work…) Ivan: work... Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 28 | Page Mr. Quilloy: …o professional it should be all in the same…di ko naman pwedeng hatiin ang katawan mo. O personal lang ang pagpasok ko diyan ah yung iba…’di ba? This is my whole individual being created by God we [inaudible]. So, hindi ako naniniwala sa ano walang personalan trabaho lang kasi that shouldn’t be an attitude (or professionally it should be all in the same…I can’t just divide your body in half. Or my entry is based on personal matters only, right? This is my whole individual being created by God we [inaudible]. So, I don’t believe that no personal matter should meddle with work for it’s just a work, because it shouldn’t be an attitude) Ivan: Yes sir… Logan: Counted as family naman po eh ‘no? yung mga employees niyo po (Contra wise, it’s counted as family, right? Your employees) Mr. Quilloy: If you really think about yung quotation di ba ang sabi doon is trabaho lang ‘to [walang] personalan. Yun palang eh sineseparate mo na yung sarili mo from trabaho and a for a boss to hear something like that, hindi siya – hindi siya encouraging eh parang malalaman mo na isolationist pala ito eh napaka-importante pa naman ng teamwork sa isang kumpanya. (If you really think about yung quotation di ba ang sabi doon is trabaho lang ‘to [walang] personalan. Yun palang eh sineseparate mo na yung sarili mo from trabaho and a for a boss to hear something like that, hindi siya – hindi siya encouraging eh parang malalaman mo na isolationist pala ito eh napaka-importante pa naman ng teamwork sa isang kumpanya.) Logan: [nods] Ivan: Yes…uhmm for the next question sir, can you tell us about the…most dif--- Mr. Quilloy: Parang ano to ah boy abunda [pep talk]. Sobrang dami ah Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 29 | Page (This seems like Boy Abunda [pep talk]. There’s a lot) Ivan: [laughs] Mr. Quilloy: [inaudible] sige lang. d- sige abuse me [laughs] ([inaudible] go ahead. go abuse me [laughs]) Ivan: Sir if ever aah bigla pong maputol yung call, is it okay if I send another link? Aah for the– (Sir if ever aah the call will suddenly stop, is it okay if I send another link? Aah for the--) Mr. Quilloy: Ah sure don’t worry…oo (*yes) Ivan: hmm okay [nods] aaah--- Mr. Quilloy: I hope I join--- I hope I join again [laughs] joke lang (*only a joke) Ivan: [laughs] Logan: Sige po [inaudible] (Okay sir) Ivan: Last three questions nalang po… aay last four questions na lang naman po sir pero (Only the last three questions or last four questions left sir but..) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 30 | Page Mr. Quilloy: It's okay. Take your…take your time Ivan: Okay sir… ahh can you tell us about the most difficult decision you've…ever had to make as a leader? And how did you decide on the best course of action? Mr. Quilloy: Hmmm… ah okay…ah teka give me ten seconds to think… okay-okay again this are confidential information. I work at Juliet Packard and yung Juliet Packard is [inaudible] of Agilent technologies keep up aah—medyo magulo siya. And right after Agilent technologies…Agilent technologies decided to give the country, kasi multinational company yun, and they nominated a local company ang pangalan ng company is ArQuan. Ngayon, when I was with Arquan, okay naman siya ang problema ko I have to leave the company and transfer to QuanTel, which is a competitor of ArQuan. Aaah pero iba naman ang mga products na kinecarry. When I left QuanTel, y-yung principal, yung Agilent Technologies, wanted me back. Sabi ko, the only way I will be returning is if you allow me to cover yung ibang territories na kino-cover ni ArQuan. I will become uhmm… junior ArQuan. Magtatayo ako ng sarili kong kompanya. Kung papayag kayo, then in will go back to Agilent Technologies. They did, and I went back. Noong natira ang dalawang kompya to sum up--- imagine-in niyo yung Agilent Technologies is a principal in the US…nagnominate sila dalawang distributor dito sa Pilipinas so ArQuan, tsaka yung bagong company na tinayo ko which is Emerge. So, dalawa kami tapos dumating yung time na may malaking player na gusting maging distributor sa Pilipinas at kakainin niya yung ArQuan. Ngayonn ang mangyayari is, hinahire nila ako to become yung CEO nung company na yun. Pero if I do that, yung mga kaibigan ko sa ArQuan, magtatampo sila dahil magiging natatakot---mawawala sila eh, yung Negosyo nila mawawala tapos kami ang magtetake over under ArQuan. So, ganon yung offer sa akin. Ito yung very critical decision that I did because I have a team meron akong pamilya. Again, ganoon pa rin yung principle ko, may pamilya ako, ngayon ang sabi nila “if I become a CEO, lahat ng mga employees ko, ‘di sigurado na maabsorb. Do you get me so far? (Hmmm… ah okay…uhm wait give me ten seconds to think… okay-okay again this are confidential information. I work at Juliet Packard and Juliet Packard is [inaudible] of Agilent technologies keep up aah—it’s slightly messy. And right after Agilent technologies…Agilent technologies decided to give the country, because that’s a multinational company and they nominated a local company named ArQuan. Now, when I was with ArQuan, it’s okay but the problem is I have to leave the company and transfer to QuanTel, which is a competitor of ArQuan though it carries different products. When I left QuanTel, the principal – Agilent Technologies, wanted me back. I told them that the only way I will be returning is if you allow me to cover other territories that ArQuan covers. I will become uhmm… junior ArQuan, I will build my own company if you’ll let me, then I Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 31 | Page will go back to Agilent Technologies. They did, and I went back. When two companies were left, to sum it up – Imagine- Agilent Technologies is a principal in the US and they nominated two distributors here in the Philippines. So, ArQuan and the new company that I’ve built which is Emerge. So, there’s two of us until there’s a big player that wants to become a distributor here in the Philippines that will eat up ArQuan. Now, what will happen is that they’re hiring me to become the CEO of that company. But if I do that, my acquaintance in ArQuan will feel down because – they're afraid – because they will disperse, their job will disappear and we’ll take over under ArQuan. So, that’s the offer to me. That’s a very critical decision that I made because I have a team – I have a family. Again, that’s still my principle, I have a family and now, they’re telling me “If I become a CEO, not all my employees will be absorbed. Do you get me so far?) Ivan: Yes sir Mr. Quilloy: …’di sila siguradong maabsorb kailangan mag undergo sila ng interview. Itong mga taong ‘to, hinire ko sila not because of competence but because of their character remember? Ang problema, itong multinational company na pupunta sa Pilipinas, very rich Malaysian company ang pangalan TechFarm, they do not classify character over competence. Ang ano na competence, and then character. I did not accept yung trabaho and then we started a very small company uhhmm yun nga VRT Systems. Nagstart kami VRT Systems na hindi kami na hindi tinggap yung trabaho so that we’ll stay together. So yan ang --- you’re asking me ano yung pinakamajor decisions ko, madam isa trabaho, sa linya ng trabaho ko, there are many critical decisions. So, I-I think, that was the greatest decision that I had to do and then yung direction ko, ang passions ko…halimbawa I decided to do that because of my family and not because of aah leave or money, or rewards. So, I’m very proud of that decision, it was very hard decision pero I’m very proud [that] I did that (…There’s no assurance that they will be absorbed so they will do interviews. These people, I have hired them not because of competence but because of their character, Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 32 | Page remember? The problem is, this multinational company that has come to the Philippines – a very rich Malaysian company named TechFarm, they do not classify character over competence. They do competence, and then character. “I have people'', I said. Three or even four people with high character level but low competence. So, I am not sure that they will be transferred. So, what we did is, I told the whole team, my family “oh they’re gonna hire me…but we have no assurance that you may or may not be transferred. What do you want to do? The offer is big, the commissions are big, and the opportunity is big. If you say financial stability, the rewards there is biggish.” But they said “boss we are not sure, we don’t have the assurance to be accepted.” And then I have this senior guy that’s around 52 years old, and there’s a possibility that he won’t be absorbed. He will lose his job and I know that that work is the one that sustains the education of his child that’s a doctor. So, this is the heaviest decision that I’ve ever made. I did not accept the job and then we started a very small company uhhmm the VRT Systems. VRT Systems started without taking that job so that we’ll stay together. So that’s --- you’re asking me what my major decisions are, there’s a lot. With my line of job, there are many critical decisions. So, I-I think, that was the greatest decision that I had to make and then my direction, my passions…for example I decided to do that because of my family and not because of aah leave or money, or rewards. So, I’m very proud of that decision, it was very hard decision pero I’m very proud [that] I did that) Ivan: [nods] Mr. Quilloy: I hope nasasagot ko kayo ng tama (I hope I answered you correctly) Ivan: Yes sir…sobrang inspiring nga po eh [laughs] (Yes sir…matter of fact, it’s very inspiring [laughs]) Mr. Quilloy: okay so… [inaudible] Ivan: kinikilabutan ako, to be honest po Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 33 | Page (To be honest, I got goosebumps) Mr. Quilloy: Ewan…ang dami—ang dami kong mga nireveal na mga ano yun ah mga very sensitive information (I don’t know…there’s a lot — I have revealed a lot and they were all very sensitive information) Ivan: Yeah… sa amin lang naman po yun sir (Yes…it’s stays only to ourselves sir) Mr. Quilloy: [nods] Logan: Next question pouhmmm…what’s your success indicator? Mr. Quilloy: Sabi ng iba, ang success indicator raw is when they become famous, di ‘ba? Sa industry naming sa Semicon industry, uhh, we view success as yung pinakasikat. For example, mayroon kaming show eh, every year kapag pinaka maganda yung booth mo, pinakamaganda yung posisyon mo, ‘pag malaki yung kinikita niyo, sometimes yun ang determinants ng success mo. Sa akin ang determinants ng success ‘ko, is finding God’s will in doing everything. So far ngayon, tingin koang will ng Panginoon for me, is to make that ‘yung company namin, ‘yung family ng company na sini-sure naming na na-susutain. ‘Pag ganiyan, ang sa ‘kin that’s my success indicator. I am very happy, fulfilled na ako ron. Halimbawa, paano mo masasabi ang teacher ay fulfilled? Kapag nagagawa niya ang purpose niya. Ang purpose ng teacher ay magturo. Pwedeng nangyayari nasabi ng iba, “Oo, my teacher is teaching” but if no one in his students is learning. He maybe teaching but not fulfilling. He is doing his job, akala niya he is doing his job but he’s not fulfilling kasi ang totoong goal ng teacher is to make sure that the students learn. He maybe teaching, but if hindi rin naman na tututo ang kaniyang mga estudyante, parang wala lang ‘di ‘ba? Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 34 | Page Another example, is sabi kona, “Oh, si Dianne is dieting, nagdidietsiya, whatever diet siya. Pero ang kilo niya dati ay fifty after one month ang kilo niya ay fifty three”. She maybe doing act of dieting but it’s not fulfilling, ‘di ‘ba? Kasi hindi mo naman na-achieve ‘yung goal mo ‘di ‘ba? So, again to determine ‘yung determinants ng success, eh dapat talaga you find your purpose and you do it. Bakit ako ginawa ng Diyos ditto sa lupa, ang nakikita ko ay is to add value. The reason I volunteered to maging, naubusin ‘yung oras ko ngayon, is I want to advice value sa inyo. I think that is one of my purposes nabinigay sa akin ng Diyos, and I am fulfilling it. Fulfilling ito, ‘pag sinasabi mo Ivan, “kinikilabutan ka sa mga sinasabi ko”. So, nagagawa ko ‘yung trabaho ko. (Mr. Quilloy: As other people say, success indicator is when they become famous, right? In ou industry, we view success as becoming the most prominent. For example, we conduct shows, every year whenever there are most beautiful booth, best positions, huge sales, it sometimes serves as the determinants of success. In my opinion, my determinants of success are finding God’s will in doing everything. So far, I think God’s will is to sustain and support the family of our company. Like that, we do not have to be extremely rich or as poor as rodents. Just enough to make sure that I can support the education of my eight children in a private institution, similar to my relatives. We are not experiencing scarcity, or even incapability of living. That’s my success indicator. I am very happy and fulfiled with that. As an example, how can you say that a teacher is fulfilled? It is when he/she has done his/her purpose, which is to teach students. However, others might say, “Yes, my teacher is teaching” but if no one is learning. He may not be fulfilling. The teacher may think that he is doing his job but he is not because the true goal of a teacher is to make sure that the students learn. He maybe teaching, but if no one is learning, nothing seems to make sense. Another example, when Dianne is following diet. However, she was a weighing fifty kilos and after a month she became fifty three kilos. She maybe doing act of diet but it is not fulfilling, right? as you were not able to achieve your goal. Therefore, to determine the determinants of success, you must find your purpose and do it. In my point of view, my purpose is to add value. The reason I volunteered to use my time is to advice value to people. I think that is one of my purposes from above and I am fulfilling it. It is proved your (interviewers) reactions as I gave you my advice and answers. Thus, I can say I fulfill my purpose.) Ivan: What’s something you’ve done or possess that have proven your success as a leader? Mr. Quilloy: I do not consider myself a successful leader. Ah, para sa akin ang successful leader, is meron talaga siya ng na-develop na din na leaders noh? Sabi nga nila may five levels of leadership, pakiramdam ko level two palang ang leadership skill ko. So, I really do not consider myself as a successful leader pa. So, ano bang characters I possess? Para sa ‘kin, I only wear one mask. I wear the same mask everywhere. Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 35 | Page Para mayroon akong tinatawag nilang integrity, moral integrity. Hindi ako mako-considered na fake. ‘Yun ang I think one of my characters and I hope this character na ginagawako ngayon, pinipilit ko maging transparent sa lahat. And then sana maging successful ako at maging successful leader. That’s one of my goal. (Mr. Quilloy: I do not consider myself as a successful leader. To my point of perception, being a successful leader has created another great figure-head. As what people have foretold, there are five levels of leadership. I consider my leadership skills under level two. In this case, I do not consider myself as a successful leader myself yet. So what characteristics do I possess? For me, I only wear one mask, In our home, I only have one personality. When I’m outdoor particularly in church, I only have one personality. Even in my work, I showed only one personality. I am not like those people who are mischievous person in work office, a saint in church, then a carefree person in house. I wear the same mask everywhere I go. To have a what so called “Integrity”, a moral integrity to be exact. They do not consider me as fake. I think one of the characters that I am doing right now is showing transparency to everything. Then I’m hoping to become a successful person and a victorious leader. That’s one of my goal.) Yuan: What is that one thing that you enjoy the most in doing business? Whenever I hear or I see success, ‘yung happy and satisfied customers. ‘Yan ang ano ko, riyan ako natutuwa. ‘Yan yung parang rewards ng mga Entrepreneur. Whenever I see, I do not want customers to be satisfied, I want the customers to be delighted. Para sa ‘kin ‘yung satisfaction, ‘yung delight, ‘yungnakikitako ‘yung whenever I see a customer na Masaya sa solusyon namin at umiilaw yung mata niya. For example, ‘yung rice straws namin, nung deliver namin. Nako! Tuwang-tuwa ‘yung customers namin. Nung naranasan nila ‘yung rice straws, very innovative daw. It’s all natural, gawa lang siya sa rice and tapioca. So, dahil doon kapag nakikita ko na ‘yung customer naming na hindi lang siya satisfied, pero delighted siya sa aming produkto. ‘Yun yung reward ko being an entrepreneur, that makes me happy. Sa ibang site naman, ‘yung mga customer naming na sumagot na “Salamat for being flexible, salamat natulungan niyo yung kompanya namin.” Ang goal ng company namin is to make factories even better. So, whenever we do that, yung customer nagpapasalamat saamin. Nakikita ko delighted sila. Hindi lang sila satisfied, we exceed their expectations kaya sila na dedelight. Whenever we delight customers, that’s when we get our rewards. (Mr. Quilloy: Whenever I hear or I see the word success, I can only imagine those happy and never-ending smiles of satisfied customers. That’s where I feel thrilled, that’s where I’m excited. That’s like one of the most explicit rewards of Entrepreneurs. Whenever I see — I do not want customers to only feel satisfaction, I want them to be delighted. For me, the satisfaction, the Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 36 | Page delightfulness, the one I want to see whenever I connect with customers is his happiness from using our solution and his shining eyes. For example, when we first announced our very own rice straws, naku! Our customers were very happy. When they experienced using the ‘rice straws’, they said it was very innovative. Plus, they thought that when they use the said rice straws, they are indeed help the environment with every sip of what they drink. They remember that it helps the environment because even if they throw away that straw, it is still one hundred percent biodegradable. So, it doesn’t harm the environment. It’s all natural, it’s just made of rice and tapioca. So, that’s why when I see our customers that are not only satisfied, but are also delighted with our product, that’s my reward for being an entrepreneur. It makes me happy. On another site, our customers replied “Thank you for being flexible, thank you for helping our company.” The goal of our company is to make factories even better. So, whenever we do that, the customers thank us. I can see their delightfulness from their vivid faces. Not only are they satisfied, we exceed their expectations so they are enlightened. Whenever we delight customers, that’s when we get our rewards.) Closing: Mr. Quilloy: Tignan niyo may entertainment na kayo, may information pa kayo. (How lucky, you get entertainment and information at the same time) [Laughing] Mr. Quilloy: Yes? May pahabol pa ba kayo? (Yes? Do you still have questions left?) Yuan & Ivan: Ah Yuan: Last question napo ‘yon. (It is the last question, Sir) Mr. Quilloy: Last question? Ivan: Yes, Sir. [Mr. Quilloy celebrates] Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 37 | Page [Everybody Laugh] Mr. Quilloy: Thank you very much for your time! Sana po maging mataas ang grade ninyo kay Sir Cada. (Thank you! I hope your grade with Sir Cada will be excellent!) [Everybody laugh again] Yuan: So, before we end our interview, me and my group mates would like to express our deepest gratitude for taking your time and effort to participate in the interview. Mr. Quilloy: Wow, thank you! Sure, Adding value. Sana makatulong. (Wow, thank you! Sure, adding value. I hope it helps.) Ivan: Sir, sanarinpo, in the future, pagano, pagnagin professionals narinpo kami. Sana makatrabaho po namin kayo, kasi… (Sir, we hope, in the future we get to work with you!) Mr. Quilloy: Ooba! Sige, mag-apply lang kayo. Tignanlangnatin kung makakapasa kayo. (Of course, just try to apply. Let’s just see if you can pass. [Everyone chuckles] Mr. Quilloy: Ang tinatanggap naming na grades ay 1.5 or below. Average ha! (As you know, we only accept an average of 1.5 or below) Ivan: Abot naman po! (We’re qualified, I quess) [Laugh] Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 38 | Page Ivan: We would also like to remind you about the resume that we would be needing as a part of our final paper in this project. Mr. Quilloy: Walanaakong resume. I haven’t updated my resume for so many years. Do you still need yung company profile namin? (I don’t have resume anymore. Actually, I haven’t updated my resume for so many years. Do you still need the our company profile?) Ivan: Ah, sure, Sir! Mr. Quilloy: Resume? Sige pilitin ko ah. I may not have yung updated, baka pwedeng yung company profile nalang, tanong niyo sa professor niyo. I hope this interview is enough, pag hindi pa, sige I will try to update my resume. Pero, I haven’t really updated my resume kasi di na ako nag a-apply eh for 20 years. (Resume?I’ll try. I may not have the updated version, may be company profile will do. You can ask your professor. I hope this interview is enough, if not, I will try to update my resume. However, I haven’t really updated my resume since I no longer apply for around 20 years) Ivan & Yuan: Ah sigepo, tanong nalang po namin kung pwede po. (Okay. We’ll just ask if it is allowed) Mr. Quilloy: Tanong mo, sabihin mo na lang. Tutal recorded naman ‘to di ba? (Ask him, just tell it to him. In fact, this is recorded, right?) Ivan: Ah, yes Sir! Mr. Quilloy: Kasi sabihin niyo mga 17 years na akong di nag-aapply. (Tell him that I haven’t applied for almost 17 years) Ivan: Yes po Sir! Mr. Quilloy: At saka, normally ang application di na kami nagpapadala ng resume sa level namin di ba? (Also, normally, in our level, we seldom send resume) Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 39 | Page Ivan: mhmm Mr. Quilloy: Parang pinapirate nalang kami, hindi na kami papadalin ng resume. Parang ganon. (We are like doing pirate means, so we don’t have to send resume.) Ivan: Tapos minsan po rekta interview nalang po kaagad. (And sometimes, you directly go interview.) Mr. Quilloy: Oo. Hindi nga eh, minsan pirate. Yung may tinatawag sila na parang ano, parang bonus, di ba? Sign-up ng bonus, if I accept yung trabaho, bibigyan nila ako ng sign-up bonus. (Yes, actually not at all. It is like pirating. They call it bonus, where they give sign-up bonus as you accept the position offered.) Ivan: Kumbaga po, parang pagandahan nalang ng offer? (So, it is like choosing the best offer?) Mr. Quilloy: Oo, ganon. Sana dumating, dadarating kayo sa time naganon, Ivan. Wag ka magalala! (Indeed. I hope, in fact, you’ll come to it, Ivan. Don’t worry! Ivan: Salamat po! (Thank you!) [Both chuckles] Ivan: Before we leave, can we have a group photo? [Group photo finished] Ivan: Thank you, Sir! Mr. Quilloy: Okaaay! Jhenean “Being a Leader” Our team is called FEUture Accountants, and the name signifies our aspiration to become certified public accountants someday. However, we also want to construct a business in which we are in control. Thus LDM helps us develop some ideas about how to be an effective leader and where to begin. Our final criteria are to interview with either a small or large company. I volunteer to get one of the owners of a firm since my grandmother knows someone who works for a company whose leader is available at the moment. So the questions we generate are a combination of our thoughts, some of which are in reference to the guiding questions provided by Mr. Leonardo. We divided our task into three parts: interviewer, transcript, and summary so that everyone could contribute. However, we do not limit ourselves to our responsibilities; we work together to create an ordered and well-prepared presentation. And this is an excellent first step toward being a good leader by assisting one another in lifting our team. Leadership is a key role that one must assume in order to lead and inspire their followers. They collaborate to accomplish a common goal. Also, some leaders begin at the bottom and work their way to the top, as Mr. Romano Quilloy did; he was once one of the individuals who aspired to be a business owner. He used to be an employee of a corporation, but now he is one of the proprietors of VRTSYSTEMS Corporation. The firm he created five years ago is one of his most profitable endeavors. Mr. Quilloy, on the other hand, has yet to establish himself as successful since he believes he has to study more and is currently not at that level. One thing that inspires me to be a future leader is his response to our question, "Do you believe that not everyone is born to be a great entrepreneur?" Why? Why not? Mr. Quilloy responds that if entrepreneurship is our passion and something we enjoy doing, we can all be successful. We occasionally fail because we are fated to take a different road, but we will be successful if we focus on what is best for us, not what is best for others. And this was Mr. Quilloy's philosophy; he believed in a quote that said we should work smart, not hard. Being a leader is not as easy as it appears. And, when the pandemic hit, many individuals lost their businesses and are still attempting to rebuild them. Life is full of challenges that must be overcome, but all you need to do is love and be willing to give it your all to get through it all. I've found and realized that we must treat our workers as if they are members of our family, making them feel like they are more than simply a coworker. They deserve to be cherished and treasured since they are the ones that keep your business running. Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 42 | Page Intia, Ivan Shane M. Meeting and being the representative to interview our choosen leader who is Mr. Romano Quilloy was such an honor for me because I got the chance to converse with a CEO of a growing local company called VRTSystems. Before the scheduled interview last November 7, 2021, at 8:00 pm, I was anxious because Mr. Quilloy was only referred to us by a groupmate’s grandmother. Hence, I do not have any idea what kind of person/leader he was. At 8:04, He joined the call, and at that moment, my anxiety vanished due to the approachable and friendly characteristics of Mr. Quilloy. As a leader, he shared to us his company’s core value, which is “Malasakit,” that I find fantastic because being a Filipino company that hires only Filipino and, more importantly, has a goal to help the earth achieve sustainability, that word is suitable, applicable and evident in everything that the company does. Besides, he also shared with us the three T’s that he uses to identify his resources: Time, Talent, and Treasure. First, time; VRTsystem ensures that their time is used efficiently. Because they work smart, not hard. Second, talent; They see this as something close to the character. As long as an employee has a character that parses with their talent, he gives them a great value because the character is far more critical than competence—lastly, treasure refers to the company’s assets that are convertible to profit. With the three T’s that Mr. Quilloy uses on VRTSystem, it is observable that his management skill is something to look up to because he gave importance to every aspect that is beneficial to his company. Overall, the interview with Mr. Quilloy was inspiring, motivating, fun, and, more importantly, educating. We did not just learn what kind of leader is Mr. Quilloy towards his family and business, but we also learned information and techniques that we can apply in our future endeavors. I hoped that we prepared more questions for him and that our time to interview him was longer because we could certainly learn a lot more if given a chance. Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 43 | Page Logan, Yuan M. It was a great pleasure for our team to interview a very good leader like Mr. Romano M. Quilloy as we had seen his great insights and advice about the business world. Before the interview, my partner Ivan and I are very nervous back then before our interviewee joined the zoom call. But when we met Mr. Quilloy, the ambiance of the call turned into a fun and enthusiastic one. He is a businessman, owner of the company VRT Systems, a cheerful and smart man. To be honest, my partner and I thought that the interview was going to be a formal one, although the questioning part is a formal one, we are still able to tell jokes and laugh. Aside from Mr. Quilloy’s joyful side, we are also mesmerized by his advice and lessons for students like us. From the perspective of a normal student, a leader is someone who leads his/her followers for the good but when we had interviewed him, we already knew that there is more than that. The decision-making process of a leader is very crucial and hard because it is his/her employees, and the company are on the line. According to Mr. Quilloy, they aren’t selecting competent employees, but rather they choose the ones who have good character, mainly respectful, trust-worthy, and optimistic. He even told us about his hard decision when he needs to be transferred to another company, but then he needed to bring only his competent employees. He couldn’t leave all his employees which he referred to as his “Children”, so that’s why he created a company for him and his employees. We were surprised on how great Mr. Quilloy is when he answered this one. Regarding his advice and lessons, what made us proud of him and his company is that they exhibit the “Malasakit Mentality”. This mentality according to Mr. Quilloy is a value he and the whole company possesses which means caring for the business. He stated that it is like when their company is going down, all the members of the company must sacrifice their time and efforts to bring the company up and save it. For me, I think that this value is what a company needs to be successful and strong. If ever I created a business myself, I would use the “Malasakit Mentality” to be one of our core values. Lastly, the things I realize after our interview with Mr. Quilloy are: 1.) True leaders treat his/her followers as a family. Mr. Quilloy emphasized that to us because motivating and helping employees grow while also helping them to develop their career skills is part of being a leader. 2.) Anyone and everyone can be Entrepreneurs. Mr. Quilloy believed that everyone can be entrepreneurs if they have passion and willingness. And lastly, 3.) Family will always be the most important thing in the world, all should work hard for their family. Mr. Quilloy is very lovely to his family and his company. He stated that it is already fixated in his mind that his successes and hard work will be directed to his family (both his real family and employees). Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 44 | Page Parana, Kate Pescador P. Having to choose which leader we would interview is a lot harder than what we ought specially with our situation right now. But luckily, we found one through our comember’s grandmother - Mr. Romano Quilloy a very well versed and inspiring CEO of a growing local company called VRTSystems. Prior to the date scheduled for the interview, I have an expectation that he would be sophisticated and intimidating but then when we have interviewed him, we’ve seen a jolly, kind, very down to earth, and approachable man that is very open to the questions that’s being thrown to him despite of it being confidential or personal. During the interview we’ve asked him a question about his opinion towards separating personal and business life as a part of our research and he answered, “hindi ako naniniwala na there is a separation between personal and yung career.” - something that you wouldn’t expect from someone who’s been so career oriented. According to Mr. Quilloy, he treats his work family as his own family and as long they perform great at their job, he would stay out of their personal lives unless it burdens the company. Mr. Quilloy said, “…but if the company is burden because of your personal life, then I will start into digging deeper, and find out how to help you.” this statement from him really caught my attention for I believe that this is something that leaders rarely possess and this is something that I believe, one of the things a leader “must” possess. Giving empathy and desire to help your employees is something that can be rarely seen to heads – a characteristic of a leader and not a boss and I think this is why he became successful with his career. Mr. Quilloy’s way of leading his company shows that he is a leader and not a boss. And it is very inspiring as well as very aspiring to have someone like him to be a boss soon. He also focuses not only to his development, but the holistic development of the people he handles and the company he manages. And he really proved that “no man is an island” with how they worked on his company. As a conclusion, I can say that the interview with Mr. Quilloy was a success and not only because he has supplied sufficient answers to our question, but also, he has taught as lessons, inspired, and motivated us with his words – a true model of what a leader should be. And though he doesn’t recognize himself as a successful leader, we, as interviewers have clearly seen that he is successful on leading their company through the stories that he has shared and how he has handled and managed the difficulties thrown to him and to his company. Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 45 | Page Sequite, John Renan As I pursue Accountancy, I never thought of neglecting the process of learning leadership. Although, we are mostly focused in individual working stations, leadership is still part of our success as a whole team. With that, I felt delighted as we have a subject for flourishing our leadership skills. In this course, we were given a chance to form a team, named FEUture Accountants, for explicit interaction and learning of leadership through conducting interview. Our group delegated the task equally to conveniently accomplish the task on time without compromising the quality. I was assigned in transcription and summary. In that tasks, I was able to contribute to our team whilst learning and acquiring new concepts and ideas from the answer of our interviewee, so as the company’s background information. In finding our interviewee, we have encountered countless of arduous challenges. Since we do not have close relatives and friends that know someone who serve as a leader in any company or organization, we took a tedious journey of finding one. However, the time has come and one of my colleague discover an interviewee — a friend of her grandmother. After the heavenly helpful information from her grandmother, we immediately send request to the person. We informed him through one of our group mates and send him briefings regarding our upcoming interview. Fortunately, the person suggested by her grandmother agreed to be interviewed for our final requirement. That person is the CEO/Owner of VRTSytems Company, Mr. Romano Quilloy, which are known for making and advocating biodegradable rice straws and other eco-friendly products. As soon as I learned the company’s core values, I was deeply moved by how they exhibit and promote care for our mother nature. Their sustainability principle brought me an awe as we both share the same love and care for our home, Earth. As the interview conducted by my team has finished, I have discovered various of essential and significant takeaways. I learned different experiences from him and engender some realizations inside me. Aside from that, there were lot of fun between our team and the interviewee during the interview. Undoubtedly, this requirement granted by our professor indeed helped us to open our tiny eyes to the real application of leadership and what truly leadership outside the campus. Honestly, the provocative thoughts of Mr. Quilloy light up the fire inside me — to somehow plan to live up my love for nature and form my own business advocating a creative way of preserving our natural resources. On the other hand, I was amazed by how I still have disagreement towards our interviewee. Although, he has more experience and talk according to it. I still find one of her thoughts a complete opposite of mine. To be specific, when he said that “wearing only one mask in different environment in displaying his identity helps him to be more transparent and earn moral intergrity”, I somehow disagree since showing different attitude in home and workplace does not mean you are not transparent nor deprived of integrity. It is just that you show this attitude to work place because it is appropriate and suitable to the situation in there, similar to your home or house. Despite that little matters, I still felt delighted and fulfiled as I had the chance to learn life experiences from the owner of a thriving local organization — the VRTSytems. Leadership and Decision Making Thought Leadership Presentation 46 | Page Indeed, I was inspired by the leader interviewed by our group. I have realized my passion in the future, as soon as I retire from working as an accountant, which is to start my own business advocating for our mother nature. Moreover, I have understood how different leadership outside school premises, is truly challenging. Most importantly, my knowledge towards conducting a business and entering an organization has broadened allowing me to prepare for my future life in the corporate world.
