OVERVIEW
The goalkeeper position is one of the significant positions in football. It is a specialized
position in football since its primary role is to prevent or block the ball from entering the net. A
great goalkeeper needs to have goalkeeper coaches and professional training. This is what
GKMarks Academy will produce. With the supervision of a renowned licensed coach, Mr. Noel
S. Marcaida, GK license academy coaches, PMNT-AZKAL netminders, and active PRO – PFL
keepers.
GKmarks is an academy in Taguig City where young aspiring goalkeepers can learn and
gain skills in goalkeeping. The GKMarks Goalkeeping Academy was established by licensed
goalkeeper instructor and academy director, Mr. Noel S. Marcaida, and current professional

TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW
Interviewer: How long have you been in this kind of business?
Coach Noel: Well, to give a brief background. I mentioned in my introduction that I was a studentathlete in FEU, and as a football player, I used that experience to have this kind of business relating
to sports. I have been working in different academies since 2003. Still, it was 2018 when I decided
to have my specialized coaching academy, which is GKMarks. It is a technical coaching academy
specifically for back-alone positions in football. Is everyone aware of goalkeeping? It is a position
wherein a low player is defending the goal in football, inside the penalty box area. So that is my
business. It is related to sports, and it is called GKMarks or Goalkeeping marks academy.
Interviewer: Just a follow-up question, sir. Is this your first time/second time/third time to venture
into entrepreneurship?
Coach Noel: It is the first time I have come up with this business related to sports. But I have been
doing this to different academies or universities. I have been working with another academy with
the same setup. So basically, I decided to develop this venture with my experience with other
academies set up.
Interviewer: All right, so, before GKMarks happened, coach, what do you do for a living?
Coach Noel: Before GKMarks, even during my college days, I have been coaching already. I
started working with kids. I am studying in feu. Usually, when I do not have classes, I go to La
Salle Greenhills to teach kids aged 7 to 8 years old. From then on, I enjoyed teaching kids the sport
that I love. The feeling of seeing kids enjoy the game slowly builds up their confidence, and it is
very rewarding that pushes me to continue coaching as a profession.
Interviewer: Just a follow-up question, coach, is your business aligned to your previous line of
work or college degree or formal training?
12
Coach Noel: If we talk about a college degree, it is not aligned because it is sports. But somehow,
I would say align on my first course, wherein architecture, because I could architect my business
from a sporting perspective.
Interviewer: For my last question. Entrepreneurship requires a variety of tasks in operating a
business, such as marketing, accounting, customer care, and others. When you started your
business, sir, have you earned any of the following in preparation for the business: Yes, I have
earned a college degree in business or entrepreneurship? NO, I have not earned a college degree
in business or entrepreneurship but attended business training and seminars? Or others?
Coach Noel: Well, honestly speaking, I have not earned a college degree in business or
entrepreneurship. I never attended business training and seminars. What pushed me to develop this
business is to provide a venue for aspiring young goalkeeper talents to enhance their maximum
potential by providing them the quality and specific training that I gained through experience in
playing the sport. Being a national team player, I attended a lot of specialized goalkeeping seminars
and continued license courses. So basically, it is not a degree, but it is a licensing course for me to
teach technical goalkeeping courses or goalkeeping training sessions.
Interviewer: As a business person, how do you like to manage your business? Is it by yourself,
with your family, or by yourself and hiring employees?
Coach Noel: I started working on the planning logistics, marketing promotion, and finance by
myself to ensure everything was established. According to what I want and slowly build up to what
my client's needs are based on my academy's philosophy, vision, and mission. While the numbers
of the client started to grow, and my program was already established. I hire coaches who are
willing to learn and understand the concept and approach of my academy. Going back to the
question, I did this academy by myself and slowly hired employees when the academy started to
grow. Aside from the funds, you would have to establish a business, but you also need to consider
and think why you would hire coaches and employees if you do not have clients yet that can sustain
the expenses of the academy.
13
Interviewer: As an alumnus of our university, we have core values of Fortitude, Excellence, and
Uprightness. Do you also have specific values that you follow and observe in your business
operation?
Coach Noel: In every business, there are always core values established to operate. These core
values can be a guide to hiring employees and for the clients of GKMarks. For my academy to
work smoothly, my coaches should be disciplined, punctual, outstanding as a player, and have the
qualities of a teacher or a mentor. I make sure that I get the core values from the moment I hire
coaches because they are the ones who will be instilling these core values to the clients. We are
just not developing players to be technically invested and physically sound. But we also
encouraged the players to be a better version of themselves on and off the pitch.
Interviewer: What is one thing you enjoy most in GKMarks?
Coach Noel: To see the kids enjoy and learn while playing or training.
Interviewer: How do you operate the academy now that there is a pandemic at large?
Coach Noel: It was a tough question, well I think on a business side, whether it is a sport, food,
insurance, or whatever. Any form of business was affected by this pandemic. It is very challenging
for my business. Face to face was a lot different compared to online sessions because it is sportwhen we say sports, it is more of application in playing against. You will only learn when you
play. If you do not play the game, you will not learn. My business is all about development, so I
cannot develop players if I do not have games, which is the challenge we are facing right now. We
focus now on online sessions. We did that to ensure that the players stay fit, enhance their
techniques, and have fun during those online sessions. We also used an online platform for the
coaches and players to get to know each better and establish a better relationship because, as we
all know during this pandemic, we are not just fighting the virus, very common the anxiety and
depression so in this way of having online sessions, the academy would know how they can address
this issue. By reaching out to players is somehow a way of helping them to stop the symptoms.
This is our focus on the academy in this pandemic and the content of our online sessions. We are
14
not just purely working on the fitness and techniques, but we also deal with our players' mental
and psychological aspects.
Interviewer: Are you satisfied with the current state of GKMarks? What are the pros and cons of
having a goalkeeping training program academy despite the pandemic?
Coach Noel: When we talk about the current state of the GKMarks, well, most of the businesses
are struggling because of limitations, right? But on my part as the CEO of the GKMarks Academy,
I would say that I am satisfied in a sense that the academy and coaches accepted the challenge to
be more prepared and maximize the technology on presenting the training session online. Well,
the pros and cons of the GKMarks goalkeeping training at home. The pros are that you stay
connected with the players. You keep them fit and sharp on their techniques. For the coaching and
player sides, discover a new approach, wherein you approach online sessions that might also be
applied face-to-face when permitted. While the cons or the consequence while having the training
program, well first, you will be dealing of connection problem (the biggest problem anywhere in
the Philippines) then next, I have been running the online session for almost two years already so
can sense the burn out from the players, some players stopped because they felt like it was boring
already, there is no challenge because when you do an online session, it will just look like your
mirroring what is asked you to do, so when it comes to decision making if you relate that online
session to face-to-face like the application in the game the decision making there will not be
developed which is very important in playing the game whether it is football, basketball,
badminton, table tennis there is always a decision making. Then you can only improve that aspect
when you are playing the game against the opponent, but if you were doing the exercise in front
of the screen, I mean you are not doing anything, but you must move a little muscle for you to
become fit when doing the exercise. There is a limitation on the programs because all the clients
on the screen do not have a similar area. Some would have two-by-two, three-by-five, and some
trains inside their rooms, garage, so it is a challenge for the program to run as they would have
different set-ups during the sessions.
Interviewer: Tell me about a time you struggled with work-life balance. Did you manage to solve
the problem? How did you do it?
15
Coach Noel: Well, basically, it is more of scheduling. During the face-to-face, it comes up to the
point wherein your client also has a commitment, so there would be a conflict with the schedule.
During this pandemic, while in an online session, it is just the same, more of schedule where we
struggle on the scheduling side. So, how is it? Now, we need to consider if you are experiencing
this kind of situation. We need to consider or know the plans of the client ahead of time. It is not
just you that is doing the program or giving them the calendar because it would not happen. You
also must consider, what are the plans of the client ahead of time. For instance, let us say in the
month of December, it is a holiday from maybe 15 onwards to 31, so it is not just giving them your
schedule for the whole month. You must ask what their plans are because they might go out of
town, do some staycation, and it might conflict with your schedules, so how do I go about it? I
plan, but there is always a sudden change of schedule and unexpected changes even if you plan.
So, when you have a business like this, Sports you must be flexible, provide remedial classes only
for valid reasons, but if there is a conflict but not a valid reason, for example, they gave you
information like maybe 13-15 minutes before the session, so it is not valid anymore not unless it
is a matter of life and death, because you plan everything already. So, I usually have this protocol
wherein if you are not attending this session. You must inform them a day before. However, I
provide remedially, but there are protocols to be followed.
Interviewer: Forming GKMarks, you have envisioned the goals aligned with it. What are your
short and long-term goals?
Coach Noel: The short-term goal is to provide quality sessions and work under techniques and
forms that will help the players perform during the game. The long-term goal for the academy is
that you want to provide quality goalkeepers to different universities moving forward. We will
never know; before you graduate from FEU, I can provide one of the best goalkeepers playing for
FEU. Not just universities, but also different national teams and senior Azkal teams. That is the
target from the goalkeeper's perspective. It is also a long-term goal for the academy to educate
more goalkeeper coaches. It is not just the player itself, but also the goalkeeper coaches because I
have this mindset that you will never have outstanding goalkeepers if you do not have outstanding
goalkeeper coaches. So, how do I go about it? I have to provide courses for potential coaches and
16
provide GK programs to different schools when the pool of GKMarks coaches gets bigger. It is
not just developing the player but also developing goalkeeper coaches of Philippine Football.
Interviewer: How did you build rapport with your employees/team members?
Coach Noel: First thing, foremost, is you must establish a good relationship. Now, how do we go
about establishing a good relationship? What I did with my employee, first thing foremost is by
letting them feel that you care and trust them. It is very important if you put yourself in a situation
wherein your boss is in front of you and if you feel that your boss is concerned about your work
and yourself. Your boss trusts you in doing things. If your boss keeps giving you work to
accomplish, I think it is a sign that your boss is putting too much trust in you and believes in your
work. I make sure that I provide them with suitable materials and the knowledge for their job titles.
Of course, you can build a good rapport by setting yourself as a good example, and as a boss, you
need to reach out to your employee by giving them or allowing them to give their opinions. Being
a boss, if you want to be followed, you also must be a good listener. I think it is very important
because when you listen to your employee, it shows respect to them, it shows trust, and you will
never know as a boss, the opinion of your employee might help on your program. With the ideas
coming in, I think it shows teamwork and camaraderie in the company or my academy. You must
let your employee feel that they belong in a family.
Interviewer: What advice would you give to aspiring people eyeing to have a business venture
and become a successful coach/leader like you?
Coach Noel: Putting up a business is a risk. When you decide to come up with a business,
everything is at risk. Most of the time, those new and young entrepreneurs already think of ROIs
(Return on Investment). You have not started your company yet, and you are already thinking of
your ROIs, and that ROIs will not happen. Often, ROIs come in years, especially if it is not wellplanned. In the first year of the business, there are full of trials and errors. When you put up a
business, you must conduct a survey and do a feasibility study on the business and its area where
you want [to establish] the business. So, you will know the wants and needs of that community.
For example, you are staying in Iceland, and you will be selling ice cream. Do you get the point?
17
No one will buy ice cream because the weather is already cold. So, I think that is why survey and
feasibility studies are essential. From that survey, somehow, you can already observe the turnout
for months. Then after that, that is where you must make crucial decisions. It is not just money,
time, and sacrifices. You need to have the courage to do what you want and what you think is right
because you will be guided based on the survey and feasibility study result. But if you go into
business and you are 50/50, forget business. Entrepreneurship is not your line. You must be ready
for the losses. Most businesses spend millions, even if they can have their ROIs in two years, they
keep on going because they are very determined to keep ongoing. Before they have decided on
that business, they have the courage to push through, and whatever happens, they always make
sure that the business will work.
Interviewer: [For our] last question, what advice would you give to aspiring people who are
eyeing to have a business venture and become a successful coach/leader like you?
Coach Noel: When you want to put a business, you need to find your business idea. You put up a
business wherein you [know] you are good at. It is also feasible for you to put up a business that
you are not good at but desires to work on. Make sure to have backup plans when your original
plan did not work. Business is not just linear, and it is not going straight. You must be ready on
the branches wherein that branches may be beneficial for you to meet that objective on top. You
have to think, as well, that when you do business, "do you want the business only to grow? Or you
want a business for you to expand?" These questions will set a different goal and objective when
you put up a business. There is a difference between the two. If you think of just [growing], then
you will just be focusing on one thing, on one area. But if you think of [expanding], it is a bigger
picture because you will be adding branches into your business. And, not only thinking that will
be an add-on to your expenses by putting up an establishment, but you also must think of the other
expenses like getting other employees and hiring them. So that will add up not just putting up the
establishment, but additional employees. That should come from the planning. What do you want
for your business?
You must look for the short- and long-term pictures. I think that is the priority [over] the ROIs
when establishing a business. If you have these short- and long-term plans, it is easier for you to
18
gauge when this ROI comes. If you have already thought of ROIs and do not have these plans,
then forget the ROIs. Everything will be a loss because you lost as well, in planning. When you
plan it well, you did your marketing right; your business will have a bigger chance of success.
You have to be open-minded. Open-minded people don’t care [being] right. They care to
understand. There are never right or wrong answers. Everything is about understanding. Always
make decisions without emotions. If you decide on things when you are upset and sad, you cannot
make the right decisions. Think, rethink, and rethink again.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER
Iona Christine Z. Marcaida
“The feeling of seeing kids enjoy the game that slowly builds up their confidence is very
rewarding that it pushes me to continue coaching as a profession.” - Coach Noel S. Marcaida
During the thought leadership interview, we met Coach Noel S. Marcaida, he is a business
leader, an alumnus of Far Eastern University, and a former soccer-athlete turned coach of some of
the big teams in the Philippines. He was our proponent, and it was of great privilege to hear his
leadership business stories.
As we have interviewed Coach Noel, it was evident that his experience and leadership
skills complemented one another. We intentionally avoided the questions regarding his leading or
questions that constitute him, stating directly what and how he leads. In that way, I have observed
that despite not being asked the obvious questions, given that it is for a thought leadership report,
his expertise and leadership skills are shown through questions that reveal that he is a leader honed
through decades of experience.
Coach Noel was an alumnus of Far Eastern University, and a soccer-athlete turned coach
of some of the big teams in the Philippines. Considering the nature of his line of work, it requires
critical thinking, building rapport, and having the courage to show authority and influence where
followers may be an in-group or out-group.
As the interview went deep into the well, I observed that his experiences made him rational
and emotional towards leading. Good leadership is not measured within the bounds of the logical
side of management (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2021). With GKMarks, he established his
goalkeeping academy keeping in mind that the academy was intended for aspiring goalkeepers to
flourish, as well as where goalkeeping coaches can learn and foster and teach the students, while
also thriving on his rational human nature side by thoroughly eyeing to expand and channeling to
aim for partnership with universities to produce players with top-notch skill sets.
From this, it appealed to me that just as in decision-making, you don’t get to listen to one
side of human nature; but you need to evaluate from both rational and emotional aspects where
both intercepts.

Realistically speaking, I am from a family of business-minded people. From first-hand
experience, entrepreneurs are known to be risk-takers and have the courage to leave their stable
job for a business they have in mind. From Coach Noel’s perspective during our meeting, he said,
“when you decide to come up with a business, everything is at risk. … It’s not just money, time,
and sacrifices. You need to have the courage to do what you want and what you think is right
because you will be guided.” Entrepreneurs are visionaries when given the opportunity and
platform; they assess and set their course of action to launch a product they know the industry
lacks (Hayes, 2021). True enough, along with Coach Noel’s talk, I apprehended that it is not the
right path for you if you are not 100% ready and confident going into business.
Among the five fundamental archetypes of leadership, Coach Noel is a Teacher-Mentor.
A statement that dug into my mind was, “It’s not just developing the player but also developing
goalkeeper coaches of the Philippine Football.” Leadership entails these goals to the leader’s
followers wherein it motivates and maintains their focus on the track (Dragoni, 2005). True
enough, that alone made it easier for me to assert that he is a teacher-mentor. He was able to impart
pieces of him to his employees and work hand-in-hand with them. It showed that his leadership is
goal-oriented, which is evident.
During the talk, I was just taking in everything he answered to us. He also noted that
establishing a good relationship is one way to acknowledge that a leader has built rapport with his
employees or team members. I agreed when Coach said you need to listen to your followers to
establish camaraderie and a fresh new environment. People relay and expose their reliance and
collaborate with others when they know they are heard and paid attention to (Latson, 2014). Hence,
in leadership, when followers entrust you in leading and give you zero doubts, this results in giving
you that push and a feeling of accountability to brave your way through (Moore, 2021).
22
As a student, this interview has influenced me to take in what Coach said. Attenuate doubts
and have courage and decide on things lightheaded. I will continue improving myself and slowly
apply and impart with me the lifelong leadership skills and experiences that Coach Noel gave to
us. I will further accentuate the practices and lessons from both the course and our proponent and
delve into learning what entails leading; in the future, I will become a leader who manifests a
healthy working setting and environment and contributes substantial actions to society.

Decision-making is an essential aspect of an individual's life. We should be mindful of the
final decisions, thoughts, and ideas we will make, as it’s brought a significant impact on our lives.
I learned so many things from the leader that we’ve interviewed. Despite the difficulties in life, he
still managed to achieve his goals and dreams. The degree that you have right now does not define
your future life and career. He shares that he graduated with a degree in Financial Accounting and
became the CEO of the GKMarks-sports industry; this describes that no one can predict
individuals’ future. I admire his way of pursuing his dreams and managing his characteristics. He
managed his business all by himself by using his knowledge and willingness to learn more and
develop his skills. He also inspired other eager youths to learn and develop their skills in terms of
sports. However, as we go over and work on our final requirements, I am having a good time with
my group mates as we develop a relationship with each other and share some laughs with the
Coach (the leader).
Before he end-up the meetings and virtual interview, he gave us some friendly advice to
continue what we have started, to continue our dreams, and be mindful of the feelings and decisions
we make in our life. We should never claim negative energy on the road as we go along to our
dreams and goals in life.

Coach Noel is a respected figure in the field of sports and entrepreneurship. I learned from
interviewing Coach Noel Marcaida and aspire to be someone like him in the future. While Coach
Noel was answering our questions, I could feel his authority and honor radiating from him, as well
as his enthusiasm for GKMarks. He started his business on his own and worked diligently to attract
clients or players to his academy. Starting a business is a considerable risk, especially if you have
no prior experience or a degree in the field. Even though GKMarks is his first business and lacks
a business degree, he has successfully established the academy. Instead, he took a chance and used
his previous university experience to plan and launch his own business. Coach Noel graduated
with a degree in architecture, which allowed him to apply his architectural skills and knowledge
to sports. He had a long list of coaching experiences from various universities and a strong desire
to establish the academy. Another accomplishment is that he was a member of the national team
and attended seminars for license courses. This demonstrates his credibility and dependability as
a business leader in the academy.
Coach Noel's favorite part of the job was seeing how much fun the kids had while playing
and training. During the pandemic, he mentioned that adapting to online sessions from face-toface training was a complex problem for his company. The academy coaches and clients continued
to focus on online training with meetings to get to know each other. He stated that his academy
prioritizes his players' mental well-being as well as their physical fitness. Coach Noel possesses a
strong mindset and determination, both of which are characteristics of a business leader. The leader
must be mentally and physically prepared to set a good example and motivate his subordinates.
And Coach Noel demonstrated these qualities by dealing with the pandemic.
Throughout the interview, I sincerely thank Coach Noel for taking the time to convey
wisdom and knowledge to us freshmen who are just starting our career paths. He mentioned several
details that I can use for the rest of my life. He is inspiring, and a great speaker, and I would like
to pay attention and learn more about Coach Noel's experiences. I'll never forget the time we spent
with him, and I'll remember his words of wisdom whenever I need some motivation.

We interviewed coach Noel Marcaida, a former student-athlete of FEU and a business
leader who manages an academy called GKMarks. We were grateful to discuss with him and know
how he became an efficient and effective business leader.
Upon interviewing, I have learned that putting up a business is not easy because it takes a
lot of courage since no one knows if the business will be successful or not. It depends on how you
will manage it and how effective and incredible you are as a leader. Just like the leadership of
Coach Noel, he thinks about how he can mold the players into one of the great players in our
generation by providing outstanding goalkeeping coaches. He also builds good relationships with
his employees/coaches and sets short and long-term goals for his academy to pursue. Despite
having many challenges, especially now that we have a pandemic, he still overcame it and
continues teaching aspiring football players. He is not just teaching football techniques but also on
how students can become good individuals. Coach Noel inspires me to strive harder to reach our
goals in life and don’t let negative thoughts hinder pursuing them. This can help me, especially
because I plan to become an entrepreneur in the future, so his leadership style and techniques can
benefit me.
We had a great time interviewing Coach Noel because he made it fun and exciting. I was
amazed at how he successfully managed his academy, especially during a pandemic. Entrepreneurs
are risk-takers because they need a lot of courage to put up a business. I hope I can apply the
techniques that Coach Noel shared with us regarding his business.

Charles Joshua A. Abulencia
The primary objective of GKMarks was his line, "To provide a venue for aspiring young
goalkeeper talents to enhance their maximum potential by providing them quality and special
training”. – Mr. Noel S. Marcaida.
The Leadership and decision-making course required us to present a" Thought Leadership
Presentation" as our final requirement. It centered us on interviewing one selected leader to view
their success stories in becoming a leader. We manage to find Mr. Noel S. Marcaida, also known
as coach noel. He is the director/owner of GKMarks. GKMarks is a goalkeeping training program
academy for football players. Its primary role is to enhance the skills and unlock players' maximum
potential in goalkeeping.
In the interview proper, I managed to see his fulfillment and determination in his business.
Coach Noel is a football player in his college days at the Far Eastern University. He used that
experience to have this kind of business relating to sports. He started his coaching career in his
college days. When he has no classes for that day, he usually goes to another university to teach
kids. And in my opinion, the highlight of our interview with Coach Noel was when he said that
"The feeling of seeing kids enjoy the game slowly builds up their confidence is very rewarding and
it pushes me to continue coaching as a profession." That line of coach let my mouth hang.
Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing others
(Maxwell, 2021). Coach Noel has a degree in Architecture. But he chose to lead and teach aspiring
football players by providing them the quality and specific training that he gained through
experience in playing soccer. He made me realize that a college degree isn't the only path to
success; instead, he chose his way on his own by chasing his dream as a coach in the world of
soccer.
From this, leadership development is highly essential to enhance one's management skills
and abilities. Coach Noel guarantees that his academy acquires suitable materials and instructors
to provide better learning for the players. I can say that Coach Noel is striving to fulfill the mission
and vision of the company. Despite the pandemic happening around the globe, he still managed to
provide high-quality techniques and education for his students. He proved to himself that it is not
27
a hindrance for the pandemic to chase his dreams. And that's why I know the significance of
effective Leadership. By applying experiences, research, and action, the outcome of the
administration will be enhanced. I also discovered that employing the cycle of knowledge is the
most effective approach to grow as a leader. I realized when I did that and I'll be able to evaluate
what I've done as a leader, including the outcomes and effects on others, as well as what I've
learned. In that way, I'd be able to see where I could develop and adapt to lead others better.
I also identified the fundamental archetype of Coach Noel, which is, first, the warrior-knight.
It was evidence that Coach Noel adapted this kind of archetype when he said, "When you want to
start a business, you need to find your business idea. You put up a company wherein you [know]
you are good at. He started his business, GKMarks academy, in his early life. He loves playing
football. And second is the Teacher-Mentor. He is the kind of leader in which he still thinks of
developing his students and coaches through online training. He proved that pandemic is not a
hindrance to chasing his dream and teaching inspiring goalkeepers in the Philippines.
As a student in the course Leadership and Decision making, this final requirement is to have
high grades. Perhaps, I understood that there is no shortcut to becoming a successful business
owner and leader. I will indeed embrace the learning, advice, and leadership skills. I will use this
experience and opportunity for the betterment of myself and our society.
