TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW
Note: Before we proceed with the proper interview, we asked the proponent for his permission to
allow us to record the zoom meeting. Moreover, we assure him that his answers and the video
will be protected by the Data Privacy Act.
Note: In this part, we have interviewed the business partner and husband of Mrs. Ciara Poyaoan.
Due to the conflict on her schedule, Mr. Julius Poyaoan was the proponent of the said interview.
-Interviewer: How long have you been into this kind of business? Is this your first time/second
time/third time to venture into entrepreneurship?
Sir Julius: We actually started 2018, February. I think it's more than three years.
Interviewer: Is this your first business or second business?
Sir Julius: No, actually. Before we started this business, we’re one of those merchants who
rented spaces in mall bazaars. So first we, back in 2014, we sold cookies or cookie cups and
brownies. That’s our first business.
Interviewer: Engaging in business entails a lot of investments in terms of money, time, and
sacrifices. And despite all these investments, still many have failed in their business ventures.
Based on your personal observation as a businessperson, is it a reality that not everyone is
destined to be a successful entrepreneur?
Sir Julius: Yes, I agree. ‘Cause you must be passionate about what you are doing. So meaning
you have to be happy doing this business. ‘Cause business is not just about making money; you
need to have strong will and take risks and help others.
12
Interviewer: As a businessperson, managing events as a source of income would focus more
on? Kindly take note of this Sir, that you may choose one or you may rank the choices according
to your preference. So here are the choices: first, creativity and strategic thinking (planning and
development of ideas), second, financial skills (investment), third, management skills (to
continue one’s family business), fourth, influence of friends or peers, and lastly, to follow one’s
passion or personal interest.
Sir Julius: I think there are a lot of factors, but, for the first one, creativity. ‘Cause when we
make proposals to our clients, it comes with a presentation. As we need to show them how this
event will happen. So, basically, we need them to imagine, we need them to think about what
would be the outcome of this event. So, that’s one.
Interviewer: Entrepreneurship requires a variety of tasks in operating a business such as
marketing, accounting, customer care and others. When you started your business Sir/Ma’am,
which of the following pushed you to continue in the preparation of your business? Do you have
earned a college degree in business or entrepreneurship? Or, do you have not earned a college
degree in business or entrepreneurship but attended business training and seminars? Or, do you
have others; kindly specify.
Sir Julius: Actually, we both have different career paths. So, I am an IT Engineer in Taguig, and
my wife is a corporate head nurse. So, we both don’t have training or formal training about
business. But, I think both of our parents…I think are the reasons why we entered this
entrepreneurship or business. Because both of our parents ventured into different businesses. So,
my dad was a chicken dealer before, so we sell dressed chicken meats to chinese restaurants in
Binondo; schools like Saint Benilde, La Salle, and HardRock Cafe. While my wife’s parents
were at the car dealership. So, they do buy and sell used and brand new cars.
Interviewer: As a businessperson, what made you consider pursuing events management as
your business, that usually requires investment of time, money, and creativity? Here are your
options, Sir. First, you are looking forward to expounding your detailed orientation skills and
capability in events management. Second, to add for your work experience before you go
13
through another business that will require much of my management skills and creative thinking.
And the last option, others; kindly specify.
Sir Julius: Okay, so I mentioned before that we joined food bazaars. We sold cookies and all.
We got the idea wayback 2015, we asked ourselves what if we run our own bazaar. Then, we
gather information on how to do it. We asked for more personnels and some organizers. And, we
asked different merchants as well.
Interviewer: How do you deal with inconsistency of your sales? Can you tell us what state your
business is in before the pandemic? On the other hand, would you share how the nationwide
lockdown affected your income, especially when events are prohibited during these times?
Sir Julius: That’s a good question, Klarence. So, it's actually part of the business. ‘Cause it’s not
always a win. So, during the pandemic, we held off our major events as we really needed to
prevent huge financial loss. So, we focused more on our meat products that were sold online.
Interviewer: Regardless of the pandemic situation, my daily attitude in my business is still
positive and proactive with my subordinates. Here are your options to answer it: agree, disagree,
or neutral?
Sir Julius: I agree. ‘Cause you need to be optimistic in all situations, positive or negative.
There’s also a bright side, so just need to look for that.
Interviewer: To what extent do you think your leadership can motivate your subordinates to
work effectively and efficiently along with the pressures in organizing your business events? You
may only choose one answer: You as a business leader, you guide them whenever they need help;
you as a business leader, you go along with whatever they do if it will promote a healthy
relationship within the workplace. And lastly, as a business leader, I am strict and most likely to
show off an intimidating image to them.
14
Sir Julius: That's a tough one. I think I’ll go with the first one. I guide them whenever they need
help. ‘Cause for me, I always think about the welfare of our business partners or employees. But,
I treat them as friends. But, I make sure that there is a boundary. So, they won’t take advantage
of it.
Interviewer:
Being an events’ organizer, how can you live out your leadership skills in
managing your team and in promoting a sense of camaraderie within your employees while
dealing with possible circumstances like, workplace conflicts and miscommunication. Do you
stay professional in all ways? For instance, by staying calm and not causing others to panic.
Second, are you understanding? Especially with each other’s differences. For instance, you don’t
blame others for their mistakes. Or, others; kindly specify.
Sir Julius: I am actually both. I delegate the tasks, so I don’t handle everything. So, that is why
we interview people before hiring because we need to know their strengths and weaknesses.
Interviewer: In our university, we have core values of Fortitude, Excellence or Uprightness, do
you also have certain values that follow and observe in your business operation? yes, I have, and
these are: NO, I do not have. But what is your guiding principle in business?
Sir Julius: Actually, no, we don’t have. But, I always tell them these. “Respect and Honesty” So
we need everyone to be honest and we do respect everyone.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER
Dela Cruz, Charles Bryan C. (Section 1- BSBA Leadership and Human Capital Management)
Mr. Poyaoan started their new business last February 2018. They were former merchants
who rented spaces in mall bazaars and sold some sort of pastries way back in 2014. He agreed
that it is a reality that not everyone is destined to be a successful entrepreneur. He stated, “You
must be passionate about what you are doing. So, meaning, you have to be happy doing this
business 'because business is not just about making money. You need to have a strong will and
take risks too and help others.” When he was asked about managing an event as a source of
income as a businessperson, he answered that we must focus more on creativity and strategic
thinking. He added that when we propose to our client, it comes with a presentation. So, we need
to show them how the event will happen and basically, we need them to imagine and to think
what the outcome of that event would be. Mr. and Mrs. Poyaoan have different career paths and
do not have any backgrounds and did not take up any formal training about business.
The reason why they did push and enter this entrepreneurial career or business is because
of their family backgrounds. Mr. Poyaoan’s father was a chicken dealer before and sold it to
different Chinese restaurants, schools, and cafés while Mrs. Poyaoan’s parents were in a car
dealership, so they do buy and sell cars. Mr. Poyaoan recalled their first business of selling
cookies on food bazaars. In 2015, they asked themselves what if they run their own bazaar?
Then, they need to gather information on how to do it, they ask some personnel, some
organizers, and some merchants as well. He also shared on how to deal with inconsistency of
their sales. And it is part of the business to have that kind of scenario because not all the time is a
win-win situation. During the pandemic, they held major events and they needed to prevent the
possibility of huge financial loss on their business. So, they focused more on their meat products
that were sold online.
On the statement “Regardless of the pandemic situation, my daily attitude in my business
is still positive and proactive with my subordinates,” Mr. Poyaoan agreed. We need to be
optimistic in all of the situations, positive or negative, there will always be a brighter side and we
must always look for it. As a business leader, he will guide them whenever they need help. They
always think about the welfare of their business partners and employees. He considers them as
friends but he always makes sure that there will be a boundary with that so they won’t take
advantage of it.
18
Being an events’ organizer, Mr. Poyaoan demonstrated his leadership skills in managing
his team and in promoting a sense of camaraderie within his employees while dealing with
possible circumstances by staying professional in all ways. For instance, by staying calm and not
to cause others panic and with a matter of understanding each other’s differences. For instance,
no blaming for one’s mistake. And lastly, Mr. Poyaoan honestly answered that they do not have
their own core values within their business, but he said that honesty and respect is the most
important for the whole team.
19
INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER
Fandino, Jose Antonio H. (Section 1- BSBA Leadership and Human Capital Management)
Earlier this afternoon, our group conducted an interview with Mr. Julius Poyaoan, owner
of Cuptain Events. I was really amazed at Mr. Julius, because he told us about his personal
background on how he and his wife started their business from being a merchant at a mall bazaar
to becoming an owner of an Event Organizer. There were ten questions prepared by our group,
each member was assigned two sets of questions each for Mr. Julius to answer from the
beginning up to the end. But I will only pick four questions that I was personally amazed and
learned on how Mr. Julius answered it all.
The first question focuses on how long Mr. Julius has been doing his business and if it is
his first time to venture into entrepreneurship? Mr. Julius answered “We actually started our
business last 2018 of the month of February, actually this is not our first business. Our first
business was we are merchants who rent mall spaces on bazaars. Our first business was a small
food stall named cookie cups”. I was amazed that Mr. Julius was in the business industry for
such a long time that he started from renting a slot in a mall to becoming an owner of an Events
Organizer, it was quite inspirational since he and his wife didn’t give up immediately.
The second question is Based on personal observation as a businessperson, is it a reality
that not everyone is destined to be a successful entrepreneur? Mr. Julius answered “Yes I agree,
because you must be passionate with what we are doing. Because business is not all about
making money, you need to have strong will and take risks' '. About the second question I was
very amazed by what Mr. Julius answered because business is a very risky job yet you need
passion and strong will since you have chosen your own career.
The fourth question is When you started your business Sir Julius, which of the following
pushed you to continue in the preparation of your business? Mr. Julius answered “Actually I had
a different career path. I was an IT Engineer, I don’t have formal training about business. The
reason why we enter the entrepreneurship business is because both of my parents and my wife's
parents ventured into the business world. My parents were chicken dealers before. We sell
chicken meat to Chinese restaurants and Schools while my wife's parents do car dealerships”.
20
Like wow! I was really shocked that even if you don’t have a college degree in business,
you can start a business from gaining experience and that reminds me that you can do anything
in your life, just believe in yourself. And the final question that I think that struck to my mind is
What kind of leadership can motivate your subordinates to work effectively and efficiently? Mr.
Julius answered “ I guide them whenever they need help because for me I always think about the
welfare of business partners or employees” It’s good that we treat our employees as a friend with
some boundaries so there will be no taking of advantages.
21
INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER
Idea, Sofia Grace DP. (Section 1- BSBA Leadership and Human Capital Management)
“We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.” It is indeed
true that for us to grow, we need to hear some criticism from the people around us. These
criticisms could be a constructive one that can really bring out the best in you or a destructive
one that may teach you how to stay still despite the prevailing hardships you encounter. This line
from the business leader, Bill Gates, could be related to our chosen proponent, Mr. Julius
Poyaoan.
In planning this paper, we started when it was about three days before the submission. It
is due to the conflict within each other’s schedule as well as the fact that it is not easy to find
someone who will easily permit you to set an interview with them, especially, this online set-up
made it more hassle and busier. Meanwhile, we already found our first proponent. Unfortunately,
by the time I asked him about it, the business was already down. This circumstance threatened us
that we need to find a new one within the day to relate the business and accomplish our guide
questions.
Luckily, one of my group mates found a proponent who was nice and professional even
when it comes to talking with us. That was something that lessened our stress because we’re
already good for an interview. Moreover, we sent an appointment letter to the proponent. We
thought that all things were good before we got to have our back-up plans. It was Sunday,
November 7, when we knew that we still didn't have any details about the person. It was a
challenge for me and my team because we’re worried about the deadline. However, I will always
believe in the line that states, “Things work when you find a way.” Because the proponent
answered right away and was sorry for his busy schedule these last days.
With this, as the moderator of the group, I can’t deny that my team was cooperative and
hands-on with the tasks given to them. Also, this activity taught me how to make use of my
communication skills in a way wherein I will be talking with a professional in a business world.
Also, it has come to my attention that I don’t really need to have a degree in Business
Administration, because when I just know how to use my skills in managing and being an
innovator, I can make a simple product to be a bigger one.
22
As I became interested in business after the said interview, I have read this line from a
website. “Starting and growing a business requires a wide range of skills, from negotiation
and decision-making ability to creative, analytical, and communication skills.” I can’t deny
that all of these were present with Sir Julius. He has a very pleasing personality as well as his
skills from being an IT Expert to an event businessman was indeed a good example for someone
who has a creative mind set in managing and creating ideas. Also, I noticed that his
communication skills were clear and engaging.
“Passion, resourcefulness, willingness to improvise and listen to others and strong
determination to succeed is what makes an entrepreneur successful. And this is what you
have to keep in mind as well if you want to be a successful entrepreneur yourself.” This
would be my concluding statement for my short personal plan. This was derived from a website
that talks about the true meaning of a successful entrepreneur.
As a starter in a business, always expect feedback as it will be the one to help me reach
the peak in my future business. Sometimes, it is better to have another person’s insight rather
than my own the whole time. To boot, I will keep in mind that, as a student taking up Business
Administration, I should start exploring and engaging with certain factors that can help me grow
a business with my definite and personal creative skills.
23
INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER
Santiago, Malik Z. (Section 1- BSBA Leadership and Human Capital Management)
Being part of the team really made me grateful. It gives me an idea on how they run,
manage, and start their businesses. With the help of our group’s executed interview, the
knowledge that I/we know about those business persons, on how they manage, apply and interact
with their subordinates or workers and even on their customers. Despite all possible challenges
and struggles that the leaders or managers might encounter in their respective businesses, they
always have those instincts to be patient as much as possible so that they can still focus and
manage to find solutions to their problems. Despite the circumstances that the business would
possibly face, as a student or future manager I learned from the answer of our interviewee that
not every business is lucky or destined to be popular in the market, especially those small
businesses. In that, one thing that I learned is that according to the answer of our proponent, we
need to be passionate in order for us to be satisfied and happy whatever we are doing.
We all know business is a sacrifice we are not sure of the possible outcomes of the
business. I learned that one of the very important aspects in managing a business is to be brave or
have a courage, it is always the thinking of it is either you win and you lose, but in reality it is
always a win-win situation, to the fact that even that your possible business would not click in
the market, yes we can consider it as a casualty, but it is much more to be considered as a
knowledge because of the experience that you have gained and learned from that. In the future
that we plan another business you will consider those failures and errors that you did from the
past. Do not be affected by failures because every success experienced failures, you cannot reach
and taste the success without failures.
I learned that becoming a great leader requires having enough courage and self
confidence, and having a mindset that even failures won’t let your business down. As you run a
business please do expect many challenges that may fall for it. You must be mentally and
physically prepared for that because as you think more about failures it will happen because that
is what you are always thinking and expecting but if you are always focused on what are the
good things will happen then you assume that it will happen and you want that to happen. It is
always in the mindset of the leader in order to properly guide the business and its subordinates.
24
INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION PAPER
Santos, Klarence O. (Section 1- BSBA Leadership and Human Capital Management)
This afternoon, my group mates and I conducted an interview with Mr. Julius Poyaoan
via Zoom meeting. One of their businesses is Cuptain’s Event. It is to provide good events for
the people themselves. The way he answered all our questions is thoroughly detailed about what
happened before and what are the problems that they're facing. I know that this interview will
help me to broaden my knowledge in business matters and in my future to be prepared for the
possible challenges and we can also avoid what happened to them that will probably be faced in
my future business. I heard from our interviewee that we must need to be “optimistic in all
situations, positive or negative. There’s also a bright side, so we just need to look for that”.
In this statement, it really changed my perspective because before, I had a business, and
when there were conflicts, sometimes I did not know what to do and I just wanted to stop my
owned business. To be honest, I had my own business before just because of my parents as well.
They helped me to sell my products and be able to gain experience on how to handle a business.
I realized that it is not easy to own a business because you need to be strong, and you must be
passionate at all times. I learned that it is typical for all businesses to have different challenges,
such as financial losses.
I also realized that having a business is not always about money, but it is also about
taking risks to be able to see if it will be successful or not, and it is also for our employees to be
able to have their job and help them to earn money. He also said that to have a good relationship
with our employees, we must be able to guide them or treat them equally, but we must have a
boundary between them, so that it will allow them to learn to respect those in higher positions or
those who deserve to be respected. I also learned from Mr. Poyaoan that in business, it is not
always a win because I believe that failure will help us to learn, and it is part of becoming a
successful person. And today, I have the confidence and inspiration again to build or to create my
own business. To sum everything that has been stated above, the interview we conducted
appealed not only to our research purposes but also to our personal knowledge. It can be
connected in my course which is the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in
Leadership and Human Capital Management. And one of my possible errands is to become a
great leader and since I am into business.
25
ACKNOWLEDGMENT
In this time of pandemic, it is not easy to find someone who has the capability to permit
one's interview, as the schedule can be complicated and hectic at the same time. However, when
you really want something to work, you’ll always find a way. We may have thought that we
couldn't pass this paper before the deadline due to the conflict in each other’s schedule. Still, we
were granted an opportunity to fully execute this paper. We would like to express our sincerest
appreciation to the following people who have upheld ourselves in the midst of this virtual
interview.
To our course adviser, Mr. Leonardo Cada, Jr., who presented adequate and essential
knowledge in our discussion that guided the completeness of this study during the course of its
execution for the final requirement. Alongside, he has been our constant guidance throughout the
semester, as we delve into various topics about leadership and decision making.
Apart from this, we also recognized the presence of Mr. Julius Poyaoan who was our
proponent on our conducted interview. Alongwith, the permission of his wife, Mrs. Ciara
Poyaoan, for us to consider their business, “Cuptain Events” as the subject of our paper. Also, the
time given by Mr. Julius Poyaoan, was indeed a mark of him being a humble and kind
professional despite his hectic schedule with their businesses.
We would also like to acknowledge our hardworking parents, who continuously provide
us a quality of education. As well as for how they encourage us to fully give our best in these
online classes despite the personal struggles.
To our beloved institution, Far Eastern University, for allowing us to excel and be a
student who is academically competent and the ones who uphold moral values as a responsible
citizen.
Lastly, we glorify the totality of this paper to our Father Almighty, who amplify
ourselves in the time of prevailing occurrences of distress and hardships; his guidance and
providence was instilled in ourselves, as we aim to discover and learn all throughout the business
process.

Appendix C
Letter for the Interviewee (Permission to Gather Details)
Dear Mrs., Poyaoan:
I am writing this letter to ask permission if you will be able to give us further details about your
business. As a business administration student, I would be very interested in knowing more of
your business along with its history, background, and your motivations.
With this, there is an attached set of questions within the document that would fully require your
kind response as you share the details for each question. We assure that your answers will be
used for the requirement purposes. Moreover, it would be a big help for our group as we delve
into your business as our chosen subject for our Leadership and Decision Making Course Finals
Requirement.
On behalf of our team, Klarence Santos will be the contact person whom you can reach to when
you have any clarification about this matter. Thank you so much and we are looking forward to
meeting with you.
Sincerely,
