Gerry Herrera Project Manager of JA Perfecto Builders Incorporated. Deanne: We are here to conduct an interview about your experience in being a leader. I am Deanne Atienza Angelika: And I am Angelika Ponce representing the group of Be Brave Rawr and we are first year accountancy students from FEU. Deanne: We would like to thank you for allowing us to interview you despite your busy schedule. Angelika: This interview is all about leadership. We were going to ask you some questions and the findings from this interview may be beneficial to other leaders in order to improve their leadership skills. Deanne: So, let’s start po the first question. (So, let’s start the first question.) Deanne: What is the most difficult part of being a leader? Interviewee: Well, the difficult part is the decision making. In a project, decision making is the most difficult part. (Well, the difficult part is the decision making. In a project, decision making is the most difficult part. It should be, is it okay? Should it be english? or tagalog? Is anything good or is it okay to speak any language?) Deanne: okay lang po kahit tagalog. (It is okay to speak in tagalog.) 5 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Interviewee: Sa decision making kasi, diyan magsisimula project mo na if tama ang desisyon mo, maganda ang kakahinatnan ng project kaya decision making ang pinaka importante sakin. (Because in decision making, that's where your project will start, if your decision is right, the outcome of the project will be good, so decision making is the most important thing to me.) Deanne: Thank you po for answering. The next question is …. (Thank you for answering. The next question is ….) Angelika: As a leader naman po, what are the most important values for you? (As a leader, what are the most important values for you?) Interviewee: Respect. (Respect) Angelika: Respect po. (Respect) Deanne: Respect Interviewee: Respeto. Respeto kasi even if a small person, small workers, nirerespeto mo siya, ganun din nila ibabalik nila sayo eh. Kumbaga, kung ano ang ipinapakita mo as a leader, ganon nila ibabalik. (Respect. Respect because even if you respect a small person, small workers, they will give it back to you the same way you respect them. Suppose what you show as a leader, they will return it to you.) Angelika: oo nga po respeto. (Yes, respect.) Angelika: Yung next question naman po is …. (The next question is ….) 6 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Deanne: How will you acknowledge the accomplishment of your employees? Interviewee: Well, isa pa pinaka, sa akin ha, kumbaga tap sa likod, good job, nice one, natutuwa ang mga under sa iyo pag binibigyan mo sila ng acknowledgement. (Well one more thing, to me, it's like a tap on the back, good job, nice one, the employees under my work are happy with me when you give them acknowledgement. Sometimes when I'm happy, of course I feed them the good they have done.) Angelika: Wow sarap naman po sa feeling. (Wow, it feels good) Interviewee: Hindi naman, sometimes lang. Hindi lagi, sometimes lang. (Not really, just sometimes. Not always, just sometimes.) Deanne: Sometimes lang pag deserving. (Sometimes only when they deserved it.) Angelika: Yung next question naman po is what is your most important strength as a leader po? (The next question is what is your most important strength as a leader?) Interviewee: Well, yung nga sa leader, yung decision making eh. It’s not just isa lang pagpipilian mo or dalawa, may tatlo ka pa the better one, yung ang ibibigay mo. Yan ang pinaka ano ko, decision making. (That's it, the leader, the decision making. That's my strength, not just the right decision, it should be a better one. It’s not just one or two choices, you have three more, the better one, that’s what you would give. That’s my biggest strength, decision making.) (That is where it all started.) 7 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Interviewee: Ang pangit ng decision mo, although nasa leadership ang as a problem solver, meron ka, doon kana sa tama na ang direksyon. (Your decision is bad, although in leadership it is required to be a problem solver, you have to go in the right direction. Not because you made a mistake, you will make another decision to correct.) Angelika: Thank you sir. Deanne: Okay the next question po is how can you be a role model to your team in achieving a certain goal? (Okay the next question is how can you be a role model to your team in achieving a certain goal?) (Well, of course you as an example, you and at the same time you are in the forefront, you are the one who will lead them what to do, you will teach, you will show them yourself how to do it, you will lead them. It's not just the command you make over and over, you must be the role model like in front. You will be the first to lead them.) Angelika: Tama po. Yung next question naman po namin is does you leader. (That’s true. Our next question is does you leader.) Interviewee: Ang dami ah ang daming tanong. (You have many questions.) Angelika: 10 questions lang po. (10 questions only.) 8 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Interviewee: ah 10 ba okay sige. (10 questions? okay sure.) Angelika: Does your leadership behavior affect your employees? Interviewee: Well sometimes kase no ah syempre sa leadership ka sometimes di naman all the time mapi please mo ang mga tao sometimes meron nagkakamali syempre medyo mainit ulo mo minsan nadadamay sila nakakaapekto talaga pero kung maganda rin ang epekto and effect niya kung maganda ang desisyon mo, kasabay mo yung mga tao mo. Yan ang epekto niyan. (Well sometimes of course you are in a leadership, sometimes not all the time you could please people, sometimes there are mistakes of course when you are angry, sometimes they feel affected but if it also has a good effect and the effect of your decision is good, at the same time you and your people should do it together. That’s the effect of that.) Deanne: The next question po is has there been a co-worker or team member ever disagreed with you? How did you handle it? (The next question is has there been a co-worker or team member ever disagreed with you? How did you handle it?) Meron talaga meron. (Well, actually there are also people who disagreed with me because I do not know everything. If he or she also knows more, or has more experience regarding that, you will give a chance regarding that. But in decision making, when you think it is okay, it's open to the leader because you're open to everyone's suggestions so if ever someone disagrees with you, you'll take his side if ever it's better for him or her to include what you include. You still have to decide, look at his situation first. There is really a situation like that.) 9 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Angelika: Oo nga po. Kailangan din po natin makinig sa iba. (Yes, we also need to listen with others.) (Yes, it is one of the qualities of a leader.) Angelika: Yes po. Next, how do goals help you become a better leader? (Yes. Next, how do goals help you become a better leader?) Interviewee: Again, again. Ano? (Again, again. what?) Angelika: How do goals help you become a better leader? (How do goals help you become a better leader? On your own, how did it help you to be a better leader?) Interviewee: Well, actually dapat lagi kang positive thinking eh. Wag mong lalagyan ng nega. Yun lang sakin ah, positive thinking lang, positive thinking. Makukuha natin ‘to, matatama natin ‘to, positive lang, think positive. Sakin ah, yun ang ano ko, just think positive. (Well, actually you can still be positive thinking. Don't put nega. That's all for me, just positive thinking, positive thinking. We can get it, we can get it right, just be positive, think positive. For me, that's what I am, just think positive.) Angelika: Yes. Deanne: Think positive. Deanne: Sa next question po, what were the tough decisions you had made so far as a leader, and how did you come to those decisions? (Next question, what were the tough decisions you had made so far as a leader, and how did you come to those decisions?) 10 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Interviewee: Well, actually isa sa decision ko na ano eh, yung …. Ang mag tanggal ng tao. Medyo ma-ano yun, Ahh sakin medyo ano sya …. Ahh syempre …. Kailangan mo ng i-let go. Kaya kailangan, kailangang i-let go, i-let go mo. (Well, actually one of my decisions was to letting go of your people. It's a bit like that, Ahm I'm a bit like that…. If he doesn't help anymore, it's because of you…. Ahh of course…. You need to let go. It's not fun with what you have, so it has to be a bit difficult, it hurts to get rid of someone, especially when you've been with him for a long time, he doesn't help anymore, right now, he's having a problem, he's bringing you to the office, you have to let go. That’s one of the hard ones. It's really hard, it's really hard to get rid of a person, especially when you've been with him for a long time. I have, I already have. A little over three. You will not sacrifice your project for them. So, you have to, you have to let go, you let go.) Angelika: And yung last question po, what is the most dangerous trait in a leader’s career? (And the last question, what is the most dangerous trait in a leader’s career?) Interviewee: Well, ahm …. Pinaka dangerous yung pagiging bossy type eh. Kumbaga, tapos …. Role number 2, if the boss is wrong, refer through number 1. The boss is always right. Diba? Yun talaga, as a leader, nagiging ganon ka. Pero hanggat maaarri, marunong ka mag adjust. Pero sometimes it happens, it happens talaga. (Well, ahm…. Being the bossy type is the most dangerous. Suppose then…. You also don't listen to your people sometimes, because as a leader, you're the boss, that's one of the leader's pretty 11 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester traits. I think that's mine, bossy. Supposedly, because you're the boss, you're just listening to two roles, you know the two roles? role number 1, the boss is always right. Role number 2, if the boss is wrong, refer through number 1. The boss is always right. Right? That really, as a leader, you become like that. But as long as you can, you know how to adjust. But sometimes it happens, it really happens.) Interviewee: Yung qualities of leadership. Diba nga? Mga qualities ng leader. Decision making, magaling ka dyan. Marunong kang mag-adopt kahit sino pa yang kausap mo. Kumbaga, lahat sila, isasama mo sila. Marunong kang mag train ng tao para umangat, para tumaas din sya at the same time. Mas masaya nga kung matataasan pa nya yung level mo, mas maganda. Ibig sabihin magaling ka magturo. Diba? Yun ang mga through my experience. (The qualities of leadership. Isn't that so? Leader qualities. Decision making, you're good at that. You know how to adopt whoever you talk to. Three, you listen to them, you’re not always right. You give them a chance. Four, of course your people, raise him too. You are not the only one to lift your chair. Suppose they are all, you take them with you. You know how to train a person to rise, so that he can rise at the same time. It's more fun if he can raise your level, it's better. It means you are good at teaching. Right? Those are through my experience.). Angelika: We gave you our deepest gratitude for allowing us to have this interview. Deanne: And for giving us an opportunity to learn about leadership from someone like you who has an expert in the field. Angelika: That is all the questions that we prepared for this interview. It is truly a pleasure for us to have you here Engr. Gerry Herrera. We were grateful for your cooperation. Deanne: Again, thank you for allotting time for this interview even if you have a busy schedule. Rest assured that the outcome of this study will benefit the future leaders. Thank you and always stay safe. 12 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester Photo Documentation Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan Deanne Kelly R. Atienza “Influence is the key to effective leadership and not authority.” Blanchard (n.d). That is the quotation that I found which is related to the answer of the leader we interviewed. I have learned a lot of things about leadership because of the final requirement that was given to us. This activity is enjoyable because I know that in the future, these learnings will help me when it comes to being a leader. In this final requirement paper, we interviewed a manager of the company about his way of leading. The manager’s answers made me realize how leadership skills and behavior are important in the business. One thing I learned is that the most difficult part of being a leader, as well as the most vital strength, is decision-making. What makes it difficult is that your decision can greatly affect your business as well as your employees. One wrong decision can lead to bankruptcy. The next thing 13 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester that I learned is that the most dangerous trait of a leader is being bossy. Just like the quote that I mentioned above, being bossy can result in poor output of projects from your employees. Bossing around will not make you an effective leader because letting your employees know that you are approachable can lead to a bond relationship, and that makes them more motivated in working. Also, respect is one trait that is important in leadership. Respecting one another in work will lead to a stronger relationship and can fruit to success. Lastly is one tough decision that leaders make is removing employees. According to the person that we interviewed, firing employees is the most difficult decision that he made. I learned from him that it is okay to remove employees when the business is sacrificing just because of this employee. Even if you have a strong bond with the person you are firing, you need to let him go because he is being a hindrance in improving the business. These are all the learnings I have gotten through making this final requirement output. I hope that I can apply these learnings in the future because I know that learning about leadership can make us successful someday. There are important skills and behavior to become an effective leader, and I will practice these skills as early as now to be ready in the future. Ma. Reindelle A. De Los Reyes In business, leadership refers to a company's management's ability to establish and achieve challenging goals, act quickly and decisively, when necessary, exceed the competition, and motivate people to perform at their best. According to Indeed Editorial Team (2021), business leadership refers to how people make choices, define objectives, and offer direction. The purpose of business leadership is to discover the best leadership model for a certain firm and its employees. The basics of being competent and prepared to inspire others are captured by leadership. Effective leadership is built on unique and borrowed ideas that are effectively communicated to others in a way that entices people to perform in the way the leader desires. A leader motivates people to act while also guiding their actions (Ward, 2020). Our group (Be Brave Rawr) had a meeting with Engr. Gerry Herrera on November 9, 2021, at 6 pm using Zoom. He is a Project Manager in JA Perfecto Builders Incorporated. We interviewed him about leadership, and I can say that he is a good leader and a very approachable 14 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester person. I admire the way he answered our questions. I like all his answers, but there are three answers that I like the most. The most crucial aspect of the planning process is decision-making. Strong decision-making is an important skill in every workplace because it allows employees and leaders to make thoughtful decisions that are more likely to result in a positive outcome. To become a better leader, you need to have positive thinking. It leads to good results for you and for your team to overcome challenges. When it comes to the most significant value of a person, and for the business, respect is the best. Workers who are respected and treated with respect contribute to a healthy work culture in which they are fulfilled, loyal, engaged, and inspired to perform at their best. I learned that making decisions is a crucial skill in the business, especially for leaders. It is also essential in our personal lives daily. Some decisions are straightforward and almost natural, while others are more challenging. Wrong decisions can have far-reaching implications that one must live with for the rest of one's life. Kim Alexia M. Mendoza Being a leader and making decisions become more complex when both are required. Leadership is all about winning as a team and assisting them in making the proper decisions, whereas decision making is exchanging and determining which sensible options with your team you believe will help you achieve your goals. While listening to the interviewee, it seemed like he really knows what are the skills needed in order to be a good leader. Although we all know that we are not perfect and we still lack skills in leadership, every day we learn something new and the knowledge we gained are a step by step effort in becoming a good leader and expert in decision making. I gained a lot of knowledge from the interview we conducted with my group members. It made me realize deeper things about this subject. First, if you are a leader, you should not simply go bossing about or ordering your staff to do this and that; you should also let them share ideas or trade advise in order to be better. Finally, there is decision making. You should not only rely on 15 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester your choice, but also consult with your group to determine what the greatest option for the success of your initiatives will be. Angelika S. Ponce Our group interviewed Engr. Gerry Herrera project manager of JA Perfecto Building Inc. As we interview him, I noticed how professional and well-oriented he is in his position of being a leader. He already knows the answer to our question because he has already encountered those events and overcome them. And I can say that he is an effective leader through the way he answers our questions. And as an individual, I want to have those so if I were given a chance to be a leader, I can apply them and be an effective one. While we are doing this paper, I realize that being a leader is not just an honor but also a responsibility. When I were given a chance to become a leader, I will assert myself first if I can do it. Because it is not an easy job you should have the traits of becoming a leader to be effective. And I learned that being a leader has its hardships. One of those is making a critical decision. Because if you fail the whole group fails. And one of the vital traits that a leader must possess is decision-making. Because the decision that the leaders do will affect not just them but also the employees. But I also learned that respect for each other is a crucial factor in reaching the goal. Because if you have respect to each other everything will go into places and make the work easier. Personally, I learned that being an effective leader is hard. There is a lot of sacrifices and adjustments you must do. Being a leader, you need to be selfless you need to listen on others opinion. And if you are a leader your mindset should always be positive, and the rest will follow. These are all my realization and learnings in creating these final requirements. I am blessed to experience this because I can apply it in the future when I will be given a chance. Cassandra Beatrice Chloie D. Pura The leader is the one who helps prioritize activities and guides people's thinking in the appropriate way. They are the ones that have the power to bring the entire group together. As a result, not everyone can be a leader. This position can only be filled by those who possess specific skills and competencies. In a really tough position, he must be bold and determine the best strategy. 16 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester People must surely be motivated by a good leader. A leader must be a role model for his people. He should also make every effort to motivate them. In the midst of suffering, a leader must also maintain hope. The ability of a leader to communicate is crucial. One must be able to clearly communicate oneself to others in order to have communication abilities. A successful leader must be able to effectively communicate. This is because poor communication conveys the wrong message to your audience. In addition, efficient communication boosts productivity. Furthermore, the likelihood of followers committing errors will be lowered. The ability to make judgments is another important attribute. Above all, a leader's other qualities will be irrelevant if he or she makes poor decisions. Furthermore, competent decision-making ensures the success of the group. The followers' efforts are pointless if the leader makes poor decisions. A great innovator is required of a good leader. He must display a creative approach in his work. Most essential, innovation ensures the long-term stability of the business or an idea. I have learned that admit when you are wrong. It takes a strong, confident personality to admit they're wrong. Others sometimes mistakenly believe that acknowledging mistakes demonstrates weakness, yet the opposite is true: the more honest and open you are, the more people will respect you as a leader. Nicole Merced C. Sionosa We the Be Brave Rawr group had a virtual interview with Engr. Gerry Herrera this November 9, 2021 at 6pm using the online platform, zoom. Engr. Herrera is a project manager at JA Perfecto Builders Incorporated and despite his busy scheduled, we are humbled and honored that he had given us a chance to ask questions even it is quite personal. When we were interviewing him, I had the initial thought of him that he is a very approachable person since he kept the flow of the interview lively and even asked us to ask him more questions as if like he wasn’t contented to what he shared to us. The most memorable answer of him that I can remember was when we asked him that as a leader, what are the most important values and his answer was, Respect. After answering that, I observed that he paused for a while as if he was thinking about something, then continued to 17 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester explain why respect was his answer. I agree with him with that because I also believe that in life, we must respect no matter their status in life. We must not respect not only the people on higher levels, but also the ones below us because those people below also helped us on achieving the success we want to achieve. Another thing that I cannot forget was how he emphasized how decision making takes part in everything on what makes a person the leader the people would want. He said that in making a decision, he always comes up with only not one or two but many, and in those choices even though there are already good decisions, he always see to it that he will choose the better decision in order to avoid repeating or making a mistake. This personally reminded me of my dad because when he tasked me on doing something, he reminds me to think about the decision I would make in order to complete a task. He also said that in doing a task, my mindset shouldn’t be on how to finish a task quickly but how will I do the task and make sure not repeat it and make a mistake. On the interview we had, I realized that in life, we would always be faced with a lot of decisions to make and in making those decisions we must choose the best one. Also, we must always respect people despite of our differences and also to be humble even if we are in a high position. The last reflection I had is that making mistakes are normal but repeating a mistake is a decision. Acknowledgment We, the Be Brave Rawr group would like to express our gratitude to our interviewee (Engr. Gerry Herrera), who participated in our interview for our Leadership and Decision Making (LDM) subject. Not only did he answer our questions directly, but he made sure that his answer would be remarkable and would be of great inspiration to us. We also thank (SGD) Dr. Leonardo Cada, Jr. for this interactive activity and for allowing us to meet such a great example of a leader like Engr. Gerry Herrera. 18 Course Code: MGT1101 Course Title: Leadership and Decision Making AY: 2021 - 2022 Term: 1st Semester References Blanchard, K. (n.d). Top 100 Leadership quotes.
