Transcript of the Interview
1. Interviewer: Entrepreneurs or business-minded person do business because of passion for life,
for recognition, primarily to make a living, or this is what your family has been doing since you
were a child.
Interviewee: All of these will cross in the mind of a business minded person, meaning of course
you don’t do business if you don’t have passion for what your business is, you won’t start anything
that you don't have passion for. At some point we all want to be recognized for what we are doing.
Primarily to make a living of course because why would you do a business if it won’t make you
survive. Lastly I am a third generation so for me at this point in time it is primarily to make a living
in order for me and for my family to survive, at this time of the pandemic passion will not survive,
so at the moment all of the businesses are for us to make a living. A lot of people lost their jobs, a
lot of people lost almost everything. Since I started this coffee shop for me to make a living
because, my industry shutdown, minimal workspace and projects. So I have to find a way to make
a living. So primarily it is for me to make a living.
2. Interviewer: What are the factors that you have considered in coming up with this kind of
business?
Interviewee: The first one is the risk, it's super high risk to start a business at this moment because,
we are in the middle of a pandemic all over the world so doing a business is like a total shutten the
5
dark. We don’t know what’s going to happen, we don't know if it's going to be a boom or a top.
So risk is cash, depending on how long this pandemic ends because, from time to time we have to
deal with the government because they are IATF foods, the on and off lockdowns. Those are the
factors or the risk that we are considering. I started a business on July of this year then lockdown
started in the middle of august up until October 15 so imagine the setback from at least 2months
of on and off, there are no people in the streets that is not what it used to be that many people are
eating outside, people that are going to different types of coffee shops and many students go to
coffee shops but not it is not the same story. I also consider if you are going to earn. Next is on
how long will you going to sustain it because, of course there’s thing that will end sooner or later,
so just like me my coffee shop is like outside of the university here in Baguio, so if I can hold on
the shop up until maybe January of February this year that the CHED is talking about the face to
face classes. If I can go down to it up until then, then I might be survived in the next few years,
but then again I am not really sure if that what’s the government wants because, if there will be a
lockdown again in January or if the CHED said that they don’t know if they really can do face to
face then, I might be force to shut it down because, we have to be both ends the stocks and
everything, considering the salary of your place and your own salary because of course you have
to pay yourself, even though it is your business you still need to pay yourself.
3. Interviewer: As a businessperson do you prefer to manage the business by yourself, manage the
business by yourself and by family members or manage the business by yourself and hire
employees?
Interviewee: There are things that you need to consider in managing business by yourself. One,
you can manage your business by yourself if you have money to do so. Manage the business by
yourself and by family members, family members that know the business not just family members.
By yourself and hiring employees, at the end of the day you will hire employees. It is not a choice
but at the moment, I prefer managing the business by myself and a family member and it is my
aunt and my cousin because it is a three company coffee shop. Its blk coffee and under me, I am
the one in charge of all the drinks and beverages of the restaurant, the hungry belly is under my
cousin so she is they in charge with all of the food that is coming in and out of the restaurant and
6
CMB Maker is the main company that we are under in, it is the coffee business of my family for
the past 3 generations, so I am the 3rd generations. I am managing the business with them and we
also hire employees because, at the end of the day I am managing the manager at the moment but
of course they have finances and everything, we also hire employees as well because we need a
cook, a server for the business. I really prefer that I have someone that knows the industry better
than I do because they know the risk more than I do. I also prefer having family at my side because
at the end of the day, if you’re in a tight knit type of family like mine, it's going to be a problem
on what is happening to the business. We are not binding ends. We need to pay rent because, if it
is just someone or a friend you will be shy if there is a payment that needs to be paid. At the end
of the day you will still have to hire employees and I prefer having a business partner inside of my
family and I prefer hiring employees outside of my family because, if it is just a family member
you cannot order them to clean this or that because there is a shy that is keeping inside of you. So
for the last I prefer having business partner with my family member and having employee outside
the family member
4. Interviewer: Do you do regular planning for your business?
Interviewee: Yes, we do regular planning on our business, because things change especially at
this time, I mean of course you have to, if you can make a new menu then you will, if you can
make a new beverage you will, you have to maximize the use of your social media, if not needed,
as much as possible do not use boost post because that’s the worst thing you will ever do, clicking
the boost post, that’s why we do regular planning because we need to know how much we are
earning, how much is going out and how much do we need to meet on the next month. It’s always
regular planning, if you need to cut down on some expenses or what are the things that we can cut
down in order to survive the business and what’s going to happen in the next few months, like this
at the moment everything is being foreshadowed by the election, we are kind of scared on what
are going to happen next because me as well is really scared that there might be another lockdown
sooner or later because there is actually a new strain that hit Pampanga, so what’s going to happen
next, if there’s going to be a lockdown then how are we going to survive. One of the things that
7
can happen to a business to be able to survive especially during the lockdown, so yes, we do regular
business planning.
5. Interviewer: How do you stay positive everyday while conducting your business in the times of
the pandemic?
Interviewee: You have no choice, at this point of time, there is no room for negativity because
everything around you is negative, the moment you go outside, you see people wearing masks and
face shields, the situation is already too heavy for you to add more weight. You have to stay
positive in order to survive because you have to think, you cannot think if negativity get into you,
you can’t think properly if it is cluttered, so you have to compose yourself, think, and it’s a new
day, so you have to think of a new way on gaining customers think of new ways in getting more
orders coming in and out. So staying positive is all in the mindset, if you want to stay positive you
can, if you don’t want it’s okay as well but don’t make it as longer as you want, it's okay not to be
okay but not for the longest time, if you’re really down today then let it be but the next day it
cannot be the same thing again or else you're going to be stuck in that same situation over and over
again.
6. Interviewer: How do you maintain a healthy workplace for you and your employees?
Interviewee: Always talk to them, ask them if they have already eaten or how’s their day doing.
In my situation, I have 1 working student reserving my place in cooking and I have another one
living with a partner. As for me, I want to know what is happening in my workplace and with my
workers because through it you will know them deeply, how they work, how to talk to them, and
how to handle them. Different people, different attitudes, and you will never know that if you do
not know where they are coming from. So me, I know them, from family background, what course
they are studying, what they have been through in their life, so that I can keep up the positivity in
our workplace because I know how to attack, I know how to console or I know how to talk to
them. Keeping the positivity is first in line, observe how they talk, how they walk, even how they
eat, just being observant with your employee keeps the positivity because you know how to act,
8
so you know how to put the positivity in the workplace whenever there’s something’s going on,
like I always tell them if one employee committed a mistake, educate them then it ends there, so
that issue should be solved already, and should not be bring up again. I always tell them, if you
really cannot solve the problem, it is okay, but if there is a possible way, try to use it.
7. Interviewer: How do you keep your team or workers motivated?
Interviewee: We’re older at the moment and everybody is driven by the same goal, and that is to
earn, so I always tell them to take good care of the café, treat it as if it was yours because at the
end of the day, if the café do not earn any money, you do not have salary, you do not have work,
and you will need to find another job. It is kind of brutal to use money as a motivation but honestly
speaking it is the motivation of people today, no one is motivated with passion today, even famous
singers, actors, and actresses all over the Philippines are not driven by passion but they are driven
by money. So the motivation is to keep thinking of ways to earn customers and getting orders in
order for you guys to get your salary. My café is an open book with the cash coming in and out,
so they know if they're earning or not and just talk to them about what's happening. You have to
make them understand to meet the quota then it's going to be a cash out on our side so it’s good
but how long can we cash out, so I tell them as long as our money is enough, then go, but if it
doesn’t work out we really won’t have work anymore because at the end of the day all of us will
not have any choice but to close the café, but if you find ways to save this café, then go, and if you
want to leave as well and look for another shop, it is okay.
8. Interviewer: One thing you enjoy in your business
Interviewee: It is like a toyshop because I collect a lot of toys, and I also do buy and sell, I like
seeing my customers reminiscing their childhoods because of the toys that are displayed in the
shop.
9
9. Interviewer: Have you experienced any conflicts? If yes, how did you handle it? For example
problem within your equipment or financial problems
Interviewee: Yeah, we do, it’s always financial whenever you’re starting in the business, cause
ROI or Return of Investment of a business returns approximately 6 months or years, so imagine
paying six months to one year, without earning anything, that is the major conflict that you will
experience whenever you are starting a business, because in that period of time you are cashing
out money, even when you are earning, it will still all go to your expenses like rent and salary of
your workers. So whenever you're experiencing like that, just think of ways on how to earn outside
it, like I said I buy and sell toys so whenever I need salary for my people, I sell some of my toys,
you have to think outside because you know that if you have a coffee shop earn and you’ve done
anything you can so that you can earn and if it is not working, you have to think outside of your
coffee shop where you can get the money and in my case I can get the money with all the
collectable toys that I have, so I sell them in a lower price whatever or anything so I can pay the
salary of my people so that you will encounter in for one, if it’s financial, if its rent there’s always
a deposit that is why rents have one month, two month advance deposits, if you cannot pay it then
use the deposit, that’s the point of it. If you're the owner you can get work outside while managing
the coffee shop especially now a lot of work is online so if you can look for a part-time job that
can sell out cash then do it, those are the conflicts that you will ever encounter.
10.Interviewer: Last question is what are your goals for your business?
Interviewee: Actually my goal is not to be known but at least earn, survive for the long run, and
be one of the last standing coffee shops ever because that is one of the most difficult things to
sustain, because some of the shops in your area are already closed and some are already declaring
bankruptcy. So me, all I want is to survive and keep my workers, because I know that they’re going
through a lot as well.

Individual Reflection Paper:
A.
James Yuan Fu
It has been an eye-opening experience interviewing Mr. Duane Umali, it made me realize how
hard it is being a leader and a business owner especially in these times, because at the end of the
day the leader is responsible for all the decisions of the business. Mr. Umali is more than qualified
to be a leader, he is humble and wants the best for the company’s objective, he said he likes to
work with people that know more than him in a certain field, which is a characteristic that separates
a leader from a boss. I saw how understanding and compassionate Mr. Umali was leading his
company with his employees and his family that he works with. My biggest realization while doing
this interview is how hard the pandemic hit people financially, Mr. Umali’s business is struggling
because of low volume of sales. But I can tell that Mr. Umali is destined to become a successful
business owner and will be a great leader in the future with his prominent characteristics. I do hope
someday he will achieve all his dreams.
B. Charcle Nueva España
When we start the interview, I already like the vibe of our interviewee because he is energetic and
easy to cope up with. Based on what I saw, our interviewee is a nice person because he is very
generous and willing to teach us on how to do some business. Mr. Duane is a good businessman
because he has this short-term goal and a long-term goal. And that is what I want when I create or
do some businesses. For example, I have this goal for this week, this month, or this year. And Mr.
Duane asks what our age is or how old we are, and the moment we say our age. He began to
motivate us that we need to start some small businesses now because we do have a lot of time to
do or to create something that we want. Mr. Duane told us that doing business is not that easy
because you will always encounter problems or conflicts. And he said to us that, “in every problem
or conflict, there is a solution.” at “di lahat ng problema, may solusyon. Pag di na kayang
solusyunan, move on and keep moving forward”. And those words are in my mind the whole
interview because it has a great impact on me. Mr. Duane is a man with a wisdom word and a great
communication skill. I like how he talks, how he explains, how he answers etc. I think Mr. Duane
is a good friend.

With this group collaboration and upon interviewing our chosen business owner, I discovered a
lot of things, it gave me knowledge, and I had a lot of realizations, realizations in life, on myself,
and in my future. At first, I was somehow scared about this activity because I will be working with
people that I still haven’t met in person, so I was expecting things to be awkward. I was also
overthinking because I am not good at socializing with other people.
I have learned a lot from our interviewee , Mr. Duane Umali, an owner of a café which is BLCK
CFFE located in Baguio City. He told us that starting a business have a lot of trial and error, and
we should start ours as much as we can, physically, mentally and financially, and with that I
realized that it is okay to be scared in starting something, it is okay to fail because not every time
is rainbows and butterflies, we will also experiences storm but we must be resilient because there
is always something beautiful after it. He also told us that if our family do not support our business,
or buys our products, then we should not continue it or even start that business, and personally, I
do not agree with that because if you have putted all your efforts, you are passionate with your
business, and if your family are not supportive with it, let them be, as long as you believe in
yourself and your business, nothing is impossible. I also learned that creating a business is not
easy, you will need to pour a lot of sweat, a lot of tears, and a lot of money, and the return of
investment will take a lot of time, so I should find ways how to handle all of finances or find
another part time job that I can pull off together while managing my business.
Mr. Duane Umali shared with us a lot of knowledge and tips which are very helpful in our future.
As an aspiring entrepreneur I became more dedicated and passionate to reach all of my goals, and
while I am in the process of doing that, I should not let myself drown and I should not forget to
enjoy every bit of the journey.
D. Kristof Miguel Morabe
The gathered interview we have accumulated with Mr. Duane Umali was insightful, informative,
and overall, an opportunity for us future entrepreneurs. As we tackle the questions, we have
gathered for Mr. Duane and his business, we have acquired new knowledge and perspectives about
13
running a business especially in these tough times. He showed us the pros and cons of having a
business, that it is not all about success and in fact, not all are guaranteed for a successful business
and that is okay, just like what Mr. Duane stated in the interview, “it is okay not to be okay” and I
agree with that statement openly. Moreover, he also discussed how we should value our team as a
leader, he expresses how he showed care and consideration when it comes to the company’s staff,
reflecting this to this course really shows the importance of leadership in a business, leadership is
what balances a business and makes it successful, a good form of leadership harnesses a company
in many forms such as communication, cooperation, guidance and etc. Mr. Duane’s business
features the reality of businesses these days, the pandemic has affected every single industry in the
world especially the business field, productions have stopped and one by one all over the world it
started closing down, however, Mr. Duane shows how of a fighter he is and showed perseverance
in keeping his business standing, he mentioned the sacrifices he endured such as loss of capital
and customers but despite all of these circumstances he has managed to keep his coffee shop
running and it really motivates to have this mindset when I start my own business in the future. As
an entrepreneurial student, my mindset is to produce and conduct a successful business someday,
and like I said, I and our team are so privileged to conduct an interview about our chosen field
with someone who has experience and expertise in providing a business.
E. Kenneth Bryan S. Jaldo
I’ve learned so many things through this activity, it is a really different experience to have a talk
with an expert on the field, especially ones that really have an established career. Sir Duane
taught me that business should revolve around your passion but there is a limit to it, like what’s
happening now, according to him business owners nowadays doesn’t revolve anymore in
passion, but for money. He explained it thoroughly by making an example himself that he
doesn’t revolve around passion anymore due to the pandemic; he is now focusing on the income
of the business or the money that comes from it. It is really true that everything has an end but it
doesn’t have to stop there. According to him, just try things out of curiosity because we will
never know, maybe the things we are just trying might change us in the future. He taught us a lot,
like how to value people around him in the workplace, how he is handling them and also how he
keeps positivity around the workplace to have a steady flow of work for people. He also taught
us the value of the people around you, knowing the people around you will help the business
14
more because you know how to handle them and how to treat them right. Sir Duane also said that
he does regular planning to his business which we can also apply in the future to prevent any
mistakes, he said that it is important to keep track on how the business is doing and how the
business will do in the next few months because in this way they can form a sort of strategy if
there were any hurdles along the way. I learned from Sir Duane that there are really times when a
person wants to give up but it also doesn’t have to stop there, just bounce back and face
everything, it’s okay to have a bad day but be better the next day as he said. These things that I
learn is all essential for me since I run a business for the past 4 years since 2018, I’ve had my fair
and share of struggles since I was the one who is paying for my needs and it’s been a great
journey, I’ve learned when and who are the people to trust because it is really important to have
people besides you, these people can make connections that can further bring your business to its
full potential. Pandemic really does hit businessmen hard since there are tons of lockdowns on
the whole country. I'm proud of Sir Duane because after all these challenges he still stands and
his business is still running, people around him have a steady job where they can get steady
income in these hard times.
F. Jeanne Mae I. Samson
As an Entrepreneur student, I really learned a lot to Sir Duane, I realized that Mr. Duane is a
good leader for his business. The questions that we asked him are very nice because he explained
them detail by detail and he also gives us advice that might help us while we are studying and to
our future self as an entrepreneur or as a worker. Knowing the employee is very important, their
attitude, past experience and family background because by that, I will know how I will handle
and talk to them in a calm way. Mr. Duane also talks about Regular planning as an entrepreneur.
I think for me that is good because, you don’t just release products in seconds because you just
think it is nice, you need to first plan, I need to know the bad and good effects of it on people.
Mr. Duane also said the bills that they needed to pay in the future must be prepared and must do
a regular planning of it. Mr. Duane really inspired me with his speech and the way he is still
fighting even though it is very hard because of the pandemic that we are currently facing right
now. I realized that I need to change my attitude starting today because I always get mad easily
15
and if I don’t change that it will affect me. I also realized that adulting is not really easy, ups and
downs will always come, but you always need to stand up and stay positive. I can be sad today
but not tomorrow I need to move forward. I learned many things in this activity for my future
self, you need to be strong in risking everything because in every mistake you will learn and
keep fighting.
Acknowledgment
