Transcript of the Interview Date: November 8, 2021 START (time): 6:30 PM First Part Landong: Good evening! We are students of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Far Eastern University. We would like to thank your participation which includes your willingness to share your knowledge and experiences with us. With the limitations of taking note of all the sharing that you will provide, the interview will be recorded for the purpose of transcription. Rest assured that the information that will be gathered will remain confidential. And before we proceed to the questions, we would like you to tell us about yourself first and a short background about your business. Also, how is your business going during a pandemic? Interviewee: Hello, so short things about myself, you know me as Montemayor, 19 years old. I live in Tondo, and I am also first year college student at PLM (Pamantasan Lungsod ng Maynila). For months, I have been working as the Chief Operating Officer and Medical Aesthetician in our business. So, I am the one who oversees the day-to-day operations in the business, and I am the one who hands on in some facials, gluta, something like that. The short background about the business, the reason why we are here in this business because my mother used to love spa and facial, so she thought of putting up a business on her own. What we are doing in this pandemic is of course everything is difficult to survive now especially we offered services so we can only allow 50% capacity. It is a bit difficult because we have to sustain the needs of the employees. We also based on the IATF Protocols on when we can operate the business. Landong: Thank you so much for the information. So now let us start with the first question. (Question 1) Interviewer: Hi I am Patricia Obsum, and my questions are first, how long have you been managing your business or organization? Interviewee: I have been managing our business for I think 8 months now since we are having our first year this November 14. (Question 2) Interviewer: Next question, how can you differentiate a leader from a boss? Interviewee: I think the leader is the one who leads the followers to do their respective jobs, of course, it will start with the leader. Then I think the boss is the owner of the business, but I think you can be a boss and a leader at the same time. (Question 3) Interviewer: Hello, I’m Klyde Viray and the first question is do you consider yourself an effective leader? Interviewee: Well, most of the time, I consider myself as an effective leader but there is an instance where I feel I am not an effective leader especially when there are conflicts. I think it is part of the process of managing the business that you sometimes feel you are lacking as a leader. (Question 4) Interviewer: Next question, what is your leadership style? There are three leadership styles: Democratic, Authoritarian, and Coaching leadership style. Democratic Leadership Style wherein you are supportive, or you give importance to the suggestions and plans of your employees/members. Authoritarian - you are focusing on the results, and you make your own decisions. And Coaching Leadership Style - wherein you motivate your members, and you share values to your subordinates to help them grow and improve. Interviewee: I think I belong to democratic leadership styles because I’m asking their suggestions if this set-up is fine with them or if everything will be fine when we do these things. I also ask their suggestions before I make a decision. (Question 5) Interviewer: Hello! I am Charles B. Pangilinan, so for my question for you what are your standards of a good leader? Interviewee: I think before becoming a good leader you need to be a good person first. To be an effective one you have to be authoritative, you must be also well-respected to be followed by your staffs. (Question 6) Interviewer: For my next question, what are the benefits of being a leader? Can you cite some based on your experiences? Interviewee: I think the benefits of being a good leader is that it is good that your staffs are looking up to you. You are the one to be asked first for suggestions and decision making. (Question 7) Interviewer: So, hello! I am Josine Relucio and here are my questions. So, what are your struggles as a leader? Interviewee: For me, the main struggle is the handling of employees because of course they have demands and expectations. So, sometimes if you can’t address those things, they have something to feedback. They are also having struggles in the workplace due to their differences, that’s why I need also to guide them on how to work professionally. Another struggle is that most of my employees are way older than me; so sometimes they can’t avoid thinking on following me because they are older than me, they tend to think that they are right because they are older but I always make sure to show them that I have potential skills to do those things. (Question 8) Interviewer: How does your leadership performance affect your team or business? Interviewee: Actually, the main problem of our business is that it affects our services if I’m not okay as a Leader. It is because, of course, sometimes our employees have a misunderstanding in their work so they’re not communicating with each other. So if I don't guide them well, they will not work hand in hand so it affects what they are doing or it affects their work. (Question 9) Interviewer: Hi, I’m Azenette Reobaldez and this is the last two questions, what advice can you give/share to those who are starting up a business? Interviewee: Just continue doing it. Whatever you want or you are passionate about, just push through it, because at first, it might be hard but that is where you will see who is really there to support you. And sometimes, it happens that the persons who are close to you will not show any support at all. So, all you need to do is to strive hard, harder. Sales decrease is also possible in some situations, like what happened with most of the business during the pandemic, but the key is just sportsmanship. Always believe that it (business) will be just Fine. (Question 10) Interviewer: Lastly, based on your knowledge and experiences, is managing a business a work or a passion? Interviewee: I think it is both a work and a passion. Work, since you are expecting an income. And at the same time, it is a passion because your business will not be successful if you are not passionate about your work. END (time): 7:05 PM Photo Documentation Individual Reflection Paper/Personal Plan Kathleen M. Landong Being a leader is not only a responsibility, but also a commitment. You need to do everything and anything that would benefit your team/members. However, it is not only the work or business that we, as leaders need to value, but also the staff members. You need to help and be helpful, work or not work related. Aside from this, you also need to be determined, handson, hardworking, considerate, and kind. While conducting the interview, I was really all-ears on what the leader was sharing - about her wisdom and experiences, wherein you can also get new information on how to become a leader and the why's and how’s when working or running a business. In addition, during the interview, I realized that you really need to be an effective leader to achieve the goals or vision of your team or business and to look for angles on how to improve it. As a COO and Aesthetician in their business, I was amazed because aside from her duties in their business, she is still a student. It is a big responsibility, and it is not easy to help run a business at his age. I also realized that it is not really easy to be a leader especially because you will think and take care not only about yourself, but also the benefit of your staff and clients. Furthermore, it is also given that it is not easy to start and run a business because there will be some circumstances (e.g., decrease of sales, pandemic). But what really rooted in my mind is that you need to fight no matter what. Continue doing what you love to do and if it makes you happy. Think about the welfare of the others and not only yourself. Be mindful and open with other's suggestions for improvements and be understanding. Patricia Louise D. Obsum The leadership experience has given me the ability to think of innovative ways to lead a group. It allows me to demonstrate my skills and knowledge by leading a group. Focusing on a goal is something that a team must do to have a good outcome. This experience has allowed me to identify the type of leadership I possess and how we manage issues. Having some challenging decisions, establishing a vision, identifying attainable objectives, and giving followers with information and skills they need to meet those goals are all part of leadership (Pratt, 2017). Despite the time, set-up, barriers, and other factors, we were able to complete the activity. I was looking forward to interviewing someone who runs a business because I'm intrigued about how she manages things, especially in this situation. I agree with her response regarding the type of leadership since I also consider other people's suggestions and ideas. Srivastava (2021) stated that democratic leadership involves individuals in making decisions of how they will guide. I saw the benefits of teamwork, effective communication, and engagement for the entire group. To summarize, leaders have a significant part in the development and maintenance of the objectives of an organization. I was able to determine areas where I needed to improve as a result of the experience. I agree with the interviewee that running a business requires patience. I realized that being a leader is never simple since you must resolve every problem that arises in the business. I'm aware of what I need to address and manage in similar circumstances. Charles B. Pangilinan Always doing what is right and ethical makes a true leader. It is very important to have these thinking to influence others and improve the organization. I learned that I must always seek for the right things in every aspect of my life especially in organizing and giving decision to a group or organization. According to Leigh (2016), to do what is right is to find it to the heart of ethical leadership. As a student, I think learning from this concept and applying it by doing our academic task can help us to be a good leader in the future as the famous saying said that leaders are not born but made. I was also a member and organizer of some of the youth organization in our community and I can say that every member has different personalities and traits, and I am having a hard time to address those differences due to lack of ideas on how to approach and deal with it. Thankfully, I learned that there are different leadership style and I mostly use a coaching leadership style. According to Wilson (n.d), coaching method is an effective way to an organization especially to those who are lacking encouragement and having unproductiveness. Doing and applying this leadership style helps me to engage to others especially on sharing ideas, information, and thoughts because it enables us to be expressive without any intimidation or discrimination. At this moment, I realize that to be an effective leader is always choosing the right thing to generate a productive and ethical output that helps every people in the organization. Josine Relucio Why Leadership is important? Well, Leadership is important because basically, Leadership is moving the world. Without leadership, I think the world will be in absolute chaos or will be a mess. That’s why leadership is important to study. Studying Leadership will help us increase our productivity, improve our skills and abilities, be innovative, and so many more. As a student, learning leadership helped me to discover skills that I didn’t know that I can do. It also helped me to have compassion for other people. Because having compassion for the people that you are working with makes the work a lot easier than not having compassion. Also, in order to finish the task or work easily, we need to be cooperative and understanding. Especially when we are talking with our co-workers or even classmates. Because having good communication is what makes our work good and presentable. To summarize all up, studying leadership is important to every individual to help them discover their skills and also to help them learn about leadership. To learn the dos and don’ts of being a leader for their future careers. Azenette Reobaldez Leadership helps me to develop my personality as a student and as a person, it boosts my confidence and leadership helps me to become more knowledgeable in doing difficult things especially when leading a group. As I experienced being a leader, one of the satisfying moments as a leader was achieving the goals it is not only the achievement of the leader but also the entire organization/group. Leadership is the art of motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a strategy to meet the company's needs (Ward, 2020). Despite of the pandemic, my group were able to complete the activity with the help of technologies and online communication. At first, I was scared because I am not sure if my group will be able to do all the tasks, this experience helps us to be more creative and productive to fully complete this activity everyone shared their thoughts and ideas. As the acting leader of the group, I am happy to have a groupmate that are accommodating and responsible to the tasks given to them specially we all work together. In addition, interviewing someone who was a leader of a business it is my pleasure to experience this kind of opportunity wherein I am able have better understanding and gain new learnings. According to our interviewee, her leadership style was democratic wherein she supports the plans and suggestions of her employees, and with that as a student that is the leadership style I want because I have this saying without their help you cannot grow faster. In conclusion, I therefore conclude that every person has its own leadership style and differences on leading. With this activity, I was able to be more confident in leading and before becoming a leader I must be a good follower. Lastly, this kind of activity gave me insights and new perspective that can help me to become a better leader, being a leader is not easy and not every leader seeks just to have power to give tasks to its subordinates but being a leader that has passion can achieve all of the set goals with the help of his/her employees/members. Klyde Emmanuel V. Viray The lesson that I’ve learned so far from this subject or from this course is that in order to become a great leader you must learn all of the things that will help you improve or to achieve in becoming not just a great leader but to become a successful and influential leader that will make your members or coworkers inspired to become just like you. According to Michael Page a great leader should know how to share their vision, led by example, demonstrate integrity, communicate effectively, has the privilege to make hard decisions, recognize success, power others, and lastly is to motivate and inspire others. Based on our interview, we interview a person who is the same age as us and ask them in this age how can you become a great and successful leader just like you, and her answers opened up my mind and gave me inspiration and motivation on how to become a great leader. She also told us how she manages her business, even though it is hard she still manages her business the right way and leads her members into success. The lesson that I’ve learned in this activity is that being a great leader does depend on your age because even though you are young or old you can still be a great leader. I hope one day that if I ever have a business on my own, I will lead them like how she led her members in order for her business to become successful. I also learned that it is up for us to decide whether we become the leader or the follower because if you don’t have any confidence in yourself for sure you’re going to be the follower but if you always believe in yourself and you bring out the best in you and for others there’s no doubt that they will follow you and you’ll become their leader one day. To sum it all up, there’s always a challenge to become the things that you want the most. If you want to become a great leader you must first clear all the obstacles or hindrances to become a great leader. According to “Center of Creative Leadership '' there are 6 challenges to become a leader and these are: Honing Effectiveness, inspiring others, Developing Employees, Leading A Team, Guiding Change and Managing Stakeholders. I will use these challenges to help me become a great and successful leader. Before I end my paper the last thing that I’ve learned that inspires me to become a great leader is because of this quote that I’ve read that says “True leaders always practice the 3R’s Respect for Self, Respect for Others, and Responsibility for all their actions. Conclusion The ability of an individual to effectively lead a specific community has a significant impact on the success of a group; in this context, the leadership style of the group's handpicked leader, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Medical Aesthetician of a Spa Business "Sparadise Wellness Hub", Ms. Lois Justine A. Montemayor, was interviewed via Zoom meeting using interview guide questions to assess whether her chosen leadership style and approach was beneficial or not to her business. During the interview, the respondent shared her insights on how to effectively manage the business particularly in terms of engaging with her employees that helps the growth of their business. Ms. Montemayor, like us, is a college student; and her zeal for achieving her life objectives has profoundly inspired us, proving that age isn't a barrier to becoming a great leader and pursuing one's aspirations. Using a democratic leadership style, one of her ways of being a leader is to actively interact with them when a decision has to be made. Of course, according to our respondent, being a leader is not an easy task since it entails a lot of challenges, particularly in terms of managing their business. One of them is that, because she is much younger than her staff, majority of them would refuse to hear her decisions. In her role as COO, she would constantly guarantee that her team believes she is capable of leading them. As a result of Ms. Montemayor’s passion to operating their business as the Chief Operating Officer of the Sparadise Wellness Hub, they currently operate their business in three (3) branches that is located in Tondo Manila, Sta. Cruz Manila, and in Commonwealth Quezon City. As a group, we can therefore conclude from the conducted interview that as a leader, developing an effective and passionate leadership approach to your business will benefit the growth and success of one’s business. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT First and foremost, we thank our God the Almighty for his blessing to successfully complete our final requirement in our subject, Leadership and Decision-Making. We would like to express our special thanks of gratitude to Ms. Lois Montemayor the owner of the Sparadise Wellness Hub, for sharing us the information of the business and for the support she gave to us to fully complete our final requirement. This requirement would have not been completed without her participation and willingness to share her knowledge of leadership and being a leader. We would like to extend our gratitude to Professor Leonardo Cada jr. for the guidance and support all throughout this activity. Lastly, a big thanks to this group who gave the efforts and hard work of each and everyone.
