Transcript of the Interview
Yna: Good day Mrs. Rhodora, thank you for agreeing to help us with this project. Let me
introduce myself and my groupmates first. I am Yna Yloisa Bondoc and these are Mairyl
Anne Cerezo, Alyssa Coleen Ilagan, Aiko Nishi and Iseah Jane Rom, and we are the
Power Rangers. The interview should take 20-45 minutes and the following data will be
used in our Final Requirement for the course MGT1101 Leadership and DecisionMaking. Which centers on interview documentation of the selected leader and the group’s
interactive communication to your success story in becoming a leader. So, before we jump
into questions, can you tell us more about who is Mrs. Rhodora Rapi and how did you
start your business?
Mrs. Rhodora: Uhm, actually, long back- magsstart ako sa- kelangan ba ng history
talaga- so long back kasi, I was an employee- so empleyado- normal employee lang din
ako, and then uhm, since 2018, I started to venture a career. So, nagstart ako mag- sabi
ko, walang nangyayari sa buhay so I need to start-up for a business so that, at least there
is some growth na mangyayari sa career ko and of course, financial stability. So, yon,
now I’m doing a- I’m doing a business, we’re offering a packaging materials here sa
UAE. So, nag-start ako niyan when I was having more experiences before from my anomy previous company na nag- as a sales executive. So, from sales executive nag-venture
ako ng career na mag-sarili. So, since I earned a lot of experiences by that time, nag-start
na rin ako with my own. So, yun. And now my company is- we’re offering to supply
printing and packaging materials in the ano- business, in the food industry and this is
hospitality. More on hospitality industry. That is the ano- restaurants- mga restaurants,
yan. Nagsusupply kami ng mga packaging sa restaurants, hotels, and caterings, yun noh.
We’re doing branding materials, so ganun. And we’re into 3 years now, so- since 2018.
Yna: So, since na-answer mo na po yung first question namin, yung how long have you
been in this kind of business, ang next question nalang is- “Is this your first time, second
time, or third time to venture into entrepreneurship?”
Mrs. Rhodora: Actually this is my first time, this company- the name of my company is
Queenpack General- Queenpack General Trading and Printing and- so this is my first
time. And of course I’m planning to plan to venture another one para it could helps me
more, you know, to grow. So, in the Philippines naman, so hopefully, ganun.

Mairyl: Hi, again po I am Mairyl Anne Florence Cereza, and the third question is “What
do you think is the common reason entrepreneurs do
business? Why?”
Mrs. Rhodora: Um… The common reason why ah entrepreneurs do business… of course
ah one of which is ah most people kasi ah… entrepreneurs is very important kasi ano as
it has the ability to improve your standard of living, plus you have the flexibility of your
time, freedom diba? Satisfactions and of course ahh you create… you have to create your
own ano umm financial stability, wealth something like that. So kaya lahat ng
entrepreneurs yun ang pinaka satingin kong first reason why they are doing the business
with their own.
Mairyl: For the fourth question po “Entrepreneurship requires a variety of tasks in
operating a business such as marketing, accounting, customer care, and others. So Before
you start your business, did you earn a degree, attend training and seminars, or do any
other preparations?”
Mrs. Rhodora: Yeah… actually I’m a graduate of Bachelor of Arts Economics… Major
in Economics in Ateneo de Naga. So… ahh I think I have a background you know and
ah… during that time din kasi when I was in college, I was a working student, so I think
kung ano yung nangyayare saakin ngayon, is the effect of what I have experienced during
that time na college ako na nag tatrabaho ako. Nag tatrabaho ako din sa hospitality
industry which means to say… in the restaurant, diba? So in that time ang laking training
ground saakin yun. So I don’t know God knows na yung ang naging training ground ko
before so nag earn ako lot of experiences and then now- I apply it now so kaya yun siguro
kaya tayo parang ang para saakin kung ano yung effect ng mga ginagawa mo from
previously, na magandang ginagawa mo previously madadala mo din yun you know
hanggang sa nag grow ka kaya yun ang naging training grounds ko and then the plus when
I became ano- um... an employee also I have all the ano um nag pupursue talaga ako na
magkaroon ng sarili kong business so and then ah I attended some seminars before also
yung mga money market, like that, and madmi- madaming- it affects me na naging- kung
bakit ako nag nagkaroon ng sakili kong business now. So, kaya ayon.

Coleen: Again, I am Coleen, for the fifth question, “Engaging in business entails a lot of
investments in terms of money, time, and sacrifices. And despite all these investments,
still many have failed. Do you believe that not everyone is destined to be a successful
entrepreneur? Why or Why not?”
Mrs. Rhodora: Ah, In my opinion, not everybody would success, you know, kaseespecially- kase kailangan natin na – from the very beginning you plan to venture your
career. You should possess the ability to render business. Of course, alam mo yung
ginagawa, you should know what you are doing, ano. And- first also, I think you have
the- ano yon- passion- what you are doing. Parang ano yon- para maging successful ka,
kasi pag wala kang passion and hindi mo gusto yung ginagawa mo, of course hindi ka
magsusuccess. And anything that you are doing in life, of course you hould have the
passion to do all these things kase- lalo pag when you are running business- ano, pag
nagrurun ka ng business, ang dami talagang responsibilidad dyan. Ano yun
responsibility? You have to monitor all each- everything- activates, every day, daily lidaily activities. Ah, you have to monitor your cashflow, you have to monitor your
receivables, especially receivables, payables, inventory. In my case, in our part, you
know, since we are offering goods, we are supplying goods, of course you have an
inventory, you have the receivables you have the payables, right? So dapat all these things
ay mamonitor mo properly, right? Dahil kung hindi mo sya mamomonitor properly, daily
and of course, if you’re not on hands on that, may tendency na mag- hindi mo properly
mahandle yung business, especially the cashflow. So kelangang-kelangan natin anuhin
yan- imonitor yan.
Coleen: For the sixth question- “What are some of the challenges that you encounter?
How did you overcome those?”
Mrs. Rhodora: Challenges... a lot of challenges in my part kasi we are supplying goods,
plus we are- we have to have a good interaction sa mga customer namin tsaka client namin
dapat may customer service na maayos, ganun, kasi kung wala kang ganon hindi mo
maoovercome masyado yung mga problema, ano? So, sometimes ang na-experience ko
is, most of the time yung customer relation. Customer relation is because always you have
to satisfy your customers to the services what we are rendering to them, so dapatkailangan ma-satisfied mo sila so there is always expectation of satisfactions para sa

customer. So kailangan you have your own good customer relation kasi sometimesexample meron kang sinuply sa client and then meron- something complain at hindi sila
nasatisfied so how are you going to overcome that. So, kailangan maayos yung pakikipag
communicate sa customer and you have your- you have the ability na mapaamo mo yung
customers sayo like para at least mastisfied sila in other way na masatisfied na sila na
okay ma i-accept na nila yun so ganon. Of course sa part ko kasi kailangan lahat ng
serbisyo ko atsaka yung goods kailangan good quality at maayos yung serbisyo. So yun
lang ang number one kong... number one naming na vision na kailangan naming lagi
pinapractice.
Iseah: Hello po, I’m Iseah, may follow-up question lang po ako dun sa answer ninyo. Do
you believe po ba na customer is always right?
Mrs. Rhodora: Yes, of course, you have to, in this business you have to. But of course
logically, hindi literally, walang ganun talaga na ganung customer kasi, diba, as a human,
lahat naman tayo may mga sari-sariling expectations, ano? So- but in the business, you
have to believe on that, always. Kailangan isatisfy mo palagi yang customer mo, so- para
hindi ma-practice masyado yung insisting- na they are always right. Diba, parang ganun.
Kelangan natin i-practice lagi yun.
Aiko: Um… follow up question naman po dun sa question po kanina, how about sa um…
financial part po sa business nyo may- may challenges na po ba na…
Mrs. Rhodora: Oo malaki, malaki ang challenges kasi- kailangan yung cash flow natin
ay laging meron, Ano? Pero as a- as a businessperson talaga malaki ang factor ng cash
flow talaga kasi could- example if you are- if- example, kung ano yun nagraran na
business- example you are running a business now with the capital something like around
1 million. Example 1million if you are running… a 1 million and you go into- into other
you know big customers na may possibility na makuha uli- makuha mong yung… yung
ano nila- yung requirements nila, but in the requirements, meron kasing mga factors yan
example pag ka um… pagpasok ka sa… example lalo na dyan sa Pilipinas ano,
Pagpapasok ka sa business sa- sa- sa government client of course there is always credit…
terms of payment you know
Mrs. Rhodora: Aware ba kayo sa terms of payment? so kaylangan kasi yan lagi i anolaging i-consider. Aware ba kayo sa terms of payment?
8

1st Semester
Iseah: Medyo nadidinig po siya
Mrs. Rhodora: hind- hindi kayo aware don. Yung terms of payment kasi ah sa business
kasi may mga laging sa client. Between client and business and then the company… a
supplier laging my terms of payment, of course in terms of payment yan yung mga ahum- ano example 50% advance and then- and then balance is ganon or 30 days pay bc na
mag babayad sila ng ganon, na 30- after you supply, your goods magaantay ka muna ng
30 days para magbayad sila. Yun yung mga terms of payment. So pagka- example your
going int- into the big busi- into a big client lagi silang may terms of payment, so yun lagi
ang nag ano ah- yun ang may malaking factors na naka-affect ng cash flow you know. So
pagka-example pumasok ka sa malalaking clients you should have a big capital also.
Kelangan dagdagan mo yung capital na nirurunout mo ngayong 1 million. For example,
you have 1 million in this month and next month you are going into a big client and they
have their own terms of payment. So kaylangan dagdagan mo yun para maka supply ka
sakanila ano. So ganon, it depends to the agreement naman din kaya ang laki ng factors
ng cash flow talaga. So yun ang pinaka big challenging ano ah- thing sa ano- sa business,
so kaylangan marunong talagang maghandle ng cash flows. Yun, what else?
Yna: Follow-up question lang po, medyo off topic pero speaking of challenges, how can
your business survive po the difficulties brought by the pandemic?
Mrs Rhodora: More challenging, especially now, sa pandemic talaga, nag- sometimesay ang ginawa ko most of the time ngayon is nag-lessen ako ng mga terms of payment sa
mga client ko so para makasurvive ako, para makasurvive kami, company, we have to
lessen our terms of payment. So, kelangan- kelangan kong putulin yung mga terms of
payment ng mga client para maka-supply kami, again, we have to get more receivables
as much as earlier para yung cashflow namin ay mag-run- mag-run-out.
Aiko: Our next question naman po is “As a businessperson, who do you prefer to work
with: alone, with family members, or hire employees? Why?”
Mrs Rhodora: I prefer to work with some other people, not family members. But of
course sometimes it helps but sometimes it could not help. Why? It’s because if you’re
working with other people, you can set rules. Makakapag set ka ng rules sa kanila na okay
ganito lang ang expectations mo you’re expecting your salary this much and you’re
expecting your benefits this much but if you are working with your family, because you

have close relationship, right? So ang nangyayari is more expectations ang gusto nila na
makukuha sayo- sa from your company. Yun ang opinion ko you can set rules if other
people ang katrabaho mo.
Aiko: The next question po is “As a leader, how do you monitor the performance of each
team member? “
Mrs. Rhodora: Ano yon, as a leader, how do you monitor the performance of each team.
In terms of flexibility and punctuality. Malalaman mo kung ano ang performance ng each
one of your team members in terms of flexibility nila sa work and then punctuality.
Iseah: So, the next question po is- do you keep a journal or record of your daily
operations? How and why?
Mrs. Rhodora: Yah, that is the most important, you have to keep your journal for records.
Nowadays kasi meron tayong mga applications, right? System applications. So, through
that, mamomonitor mo lahat ng activities in the business. So, yun, through applications
you can monitor your cashflow, through applications you can monitor your receivables,
through applications you can monitor your payables, inventory- through applicationinventory. So, lahat yan through system. That is very important nowadays kase high
technology na tayo ngayon. So, through that, easily na mamonitor natin lahat ng activities.
Pa’no nangyayari yung daily activities, yun.
Iseah: Okay, Lastly po,-the last question is- what is the one thing that you enjoy the most
in your business?
Mrs. Rhodora: Challenging. Challenges. Yun ang naeenjoy ko kasi the more challenges
I’m facing, the more I became more strong, more strong to handle challenges. So,
challenges ang most naeenjoy ko kasi if I don’t have that parang feeling ko- in a daily life
na ginagawa ko, parang pagka-wala akong naeencounter na challenges, hindi masyado
akong- most yung energy, parang ganun. And then of course plus, when you’re facing all
challenges, you’re enjoying also when you- you know, kung meron kang nagegenerate sa
sarili mo na from your own, diba. So yun ang ano ko- yun ang pinakamost enjoyable. And
of course masatisfy ko yung mga kailangan namin, mga kailangan ng family ko, oh diba.
So, yun.
Iseah: Uhm, that will be the ending of our interview, thank you again for your time and
participation Mrs. Rapi and have a nice day and goodbye.

A Reflection on Progress of Success
Each person's definition of success is different. Success may be in two types: self
or personal achievement and an outsider's perspective on this achievement. But then,
behind the glamor of successful individuals, there was always a beginning story on how
they struggled to achieve a successful living.

Our group, Power Rangers, interviewed a leader/entrepreneur who owns her
business in United Arab Emirates, and I am proud to say that woman is my mother. I grew
up having my mom as a positive influence in my life despite the distance between us.
That is why I am glad that this project gave us an opportunity to share the valuable things
I learned from my mother on how she handled her struggles before reaching this point of
success in her life.
Money and fulfilling materialistic aims are commonly connected with success but
it can also be morally grounded as well (AcademicHelp, 2018). We are more focused on
material possessions that do not provide us with long-term satisfaction and contentment.
For a brief amount of time, we may feel joyful and contented, but this feeling will pass
and so people continue to acquire new stuff in attempt to recreate that satisfaction. In the
interview, Mrs. Rhodora Rapi, our interviewee mentioned different things that she
achieved, it may be at her current work, student life before, and with her own family as a
single mother. I can relate these things as I think back on my own experiences, I realize
I've had a lot of accomplishments, all of which are equally important in terms of
accomplishing my goals. It may be small accomplishments in school, sports, or extracurricular activities that don’t provide material things but give me achievement
satisfaction that will always be part of my learning and experiences.
Mrs. Rapi also mentioned the struggles she had to go through to finish her college
studies. She had to be a working student back in college to support her education and that
she proudly said was the thing that shaped her passion and thirst for success. Good times
do not drive growth in the same way that bad circumstances do. Taking on obstacles and
overcoming them increases one's adaptability and capability (Ware, n.a). In addition,
Steven Hall, a British author, once said, “Dealing with adversity, having exposure to
adversity early on, is very useful in how someone goes through his life.” (Lambert, 2014).
So, I learned that knowing how to overcome difficulties, learning from setbacks, and
gaining something from mistakes provides a strong basis for future success.

Afterall, it is not a bad thing to embrace something such as challenges and struggles.
Now, I live up to that by learning from the things you encounter, you will be able to move
forward to the front line of life.
Cerezo, Mairyl Anne Florence M
Being a risk taker is one of the qualities that an entrepreneur must possess. During
our interview with Mrs. Rapi, she mentions that she was a normal employee, until one
day, she decided to venture on a different career for her growth. I admire her for being
brave for she followed what her heart desires and that is starting her own business. She
was a sales executive in her previous job and her experiences and knowledge that she
acquired in her previous company helped her to be successful in starting her own business.
Being an entrepreneur has a lot of benefits because they have the ability to generate ideas,
they also have the time and the financial stability. I agree with Mrs. Rapi that she believed
that not all people are meant to be a successful entrepreneur. For me, knowledge plays a
huge role in being an entrepreneur. Attending seminars and taking degrees that is related
to the business is an advantage but having the willingness to learn, dedication, hard work
and passion to do business is the most important advantage that an entrepreneurs should
have. Mrs. Rapi also mentioned that she was a working student before. As a working
student, she is an inspiration because I know how difficult it is to work for you to provide
for your own studies. Also, it is difficult to balance academics and work. I look up to her
because her difficult situation did not hinder her to continue her studies. Being a woman
with big dreams, Mrs. Rapi is a great role model for she embodies a good leader and a
humble and successful entrepreneur.
Nishi, Aiko B.
While working alongside family members may appear to be a good idea, it
frequently leads to nepotism, difficult and unpleasant circumstances, and even the
possibility for relationships to be harmed. Nepotism is the practice of choosing a career
based on personal relationships. It also features hiring or promoting cousins and friends,
although there are other talented candidates. Nepotism in business is not uncommon, as
it is an act that is not subject to universal rules.

Mrs. Rhodora mentioned in the interview that she prefers to work with other people
than working with family members. She explained, setting rules with other people are
easier than setting rules with your own family members. As employees have an
expectation to their leader, family members tend to have more expectations compared to
a normal employee. As someone who desires to have an own business someday, this made
me think about nepotism in business. In my own opinion, having family members as your
team member/employee, it will be either you will have favoritism, or they will expect
favoritism from you. The problem with nepotism is that you may not even realize you're
doing it, yet it's still being perceived by your coworkers.
Finding and keeping the proper workers for your company is difficult. Prioritizing
prospective hire outcomes can help you predict whether recruiting family members or
friends, is the best choice for your company. Running a business is difficult enough, but
adding a family can make it even more difficult. There are some drawbacks to keep in
mind when working with your family, but there are also many benefits when done
correctly.
Reyes, Marco M.
In the interview of Mrs. Rhodora Rapi, I learned from her to be a better leader.
She became successful in life because of her life experience and correct decision-making.
I truly understand what she says in the interview because I have been influenced by my
parents, who is also running a small business. However, all my previous knowledge from
my parents was further verified due to Mrs. Rapi’s guidance.
There is so many memorable saying from Mrs. Rapi. She stated that what did you
do in the past, you will bring it in the future. She claimed that because of his previous
experience in life, she gained the ability to improve herself and learn from it. According
to Cruz (2017), A person’s past determines the future of a person. It means that every
action you create has a connection of what you will get in the future. What Cruz said is
like what happened to Mrs. Rapi; every choices she made is connected to a successful

future. It reminds me that I should give my best now to become successful in the future.
It gives me the inspiration to do more and create opportunities today because it is for my
own benefit.
Mrs. Rapi also mentions that a leader should have a passion to be victorious in
business. A person should know what they are doing and not lose in the way. They should
take responsibility for engaging in business. According to Gold (2019), passion is very
important to entrepreneurs because it can determine if a person will succeed in creating a
business. He also mentions that success is impossible without passion. It means that a
person should love what they are doing. For example, if they are doing something they
like, they should lose time and still never feel tired. Like Mrs. Rapi and Cruz said, passion
is very important; now, I should find out my passion in life because knowing this can
significantly impact my future.
Embrace the challenges you face, according to Mrs. Rapi. It would be best to enjoy
facing challenges because once you overcome them, you can face more challenges easily.
This statement is most I impress with, because I have a mindset of fearing challenges, but
now that I know that I should not fear it instead I should brace and enjoy it just like how
Mrs. Rapi did. According to Warrell (2020), fearing challenges is caused by a lack of selftrust. Therefore, it shows that a person should trust themself to overcome challenges they
are facing. This statement gives me a chance to change my mindset because running to
the problem does us no favors and will only drag us down in life, so learning this is an
eye-opener.
I realize that your past is affecting your future self, so it is better to do your best
in the present day to have a better future. Having passion in your work can improve your
ways of doing things. Finding your passion as early as possible can be used as a guide in
your life. Finally, facing challenges head-on is a great thing because it can help you
overcome more complex challenges in life. These are the things I learned and gained from
Mrs. Rapi’s interview that will help me in the future.

“…the more challenges I’m facing, the more I became more strong, more strong to
handle challenges.” - Mrs. Rhodora
As I learned the process of becoming a better leader, I also gained a better
understanding of how an organization or a business works. In this interview with Mrs.
Rhodora, I appreciate more the learnings from my previous lessons. From the e-book
Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience by Hughes et al. (2015), it was
mentioned that the spiral of experience is the most productive way to develop as a leader,
which includes perceiving experiences, perception, and making better actions. Mrs.
Rhodora mentioned her learnings from her experiences that became her training grounds
to be a successful leader. Also, she mentioned how she overcome and perceived her
challenges. She’s also intrigued by the challenges because it helps her stronger and grows
more. For me, at some point, she used the spiral of experience to reach where she at now
and these can be helpful to me as a pursuer in the business field. This made me realize
that even it's good or bad experiences, my next step is up to how I perceive and how I will
take action to overcome these.
Above all, I took these experiences as lessons and as guides for me to become a
great leader. Besides, in business, if you take the experiences first, the inflows will come
later.
