Global Project
Prácticas Culturales: los saludos, las plazas y el espacio personal
Read the selections from the VISTAS textbook below, and then complete the questions in Step 1 and Step 2 of
the assignment. This is a required assignment (Global Project) for students receiving Dual Enrollment credit
from HCC. It will also be sounded in the Assessments portion of your OMHS grade. It is a 25 point
assessment. Step 1 can be completed entirely in English. Step 2 asks you to write dialogues IN SPANISH,
paying attention to the level of formality that you need to use in each situation (using tú or usted).
Step 1:
Use the readings above, information you have learned in class, or investigate/research to answer the
following questions. Make sure to cite any sources that you use. Do not use Wikipedia.
1. In the Spanish-speaking world, the importance of personal space is usually different than in the
USA. Do people in the Spanish-speaking world use more or less personal space than in the USA
when greeting each other? (Note: less personal space means they stand or sit closer and touch each
other more. More personal space means they keep more of a physical distance).
2. In informal, non-business settings, how do people usually greet each other in the Spanish-speaking
world (what do they physically do?)
3. How do men usually greet each other in the Spanish speaking world?
4. In more formal business settings, what is an appropriate greeting in the Spanish-speaking world
(what do they physically do?)
6. What buildings are typically found in the plaza principal in the Spanish-speaking world? (think of
government and religion). Why is this so? (think historically)
7. What are two types of common activities or events that are common at a plaza principal?
*8. Summarize in 25-50 words what you have learned about the plaza principal: What happens at the
plaza principal and what is the importance of the plaza principal to the countries and people of the
Spanish-speaking world?
Step 2:
Diálogos informales y formales
Note: Pay attention to the use of tú and usted as you do this portion of the assignment.
1. Imagine you are at a party in a Spanish-speaking country. Write a short dialogue that includes
greetings AND 4-5 exchanges (1 exchange = question/statement AND Response (so: 8-10 full
thoughts beyond the greeting and how are you question, not including hola or adiós) between 2
people who are being introduced by a friend at that party (ideas: Greetings: Hi, how are you. Other
things you could ask: what’s your name, where are you from, what do you study, where do you work,
etc.) Use ideas from what we have learned so far in this course, and stay in the present tense: use
what we are learning! Include responses to each of these things – it needs to be a DIALOGUE. Think
about the use of tú or usted.
2. Now imagine you are starting a new job and are greeting a new colleague you want to show
respect to. Write a short dialogue that includes greetings AND 4-5 exchanges (1 exchange =
question/statement AND Response: (so 8-10 full thoughts beyond the greeting and how are you
question) between yourself and this new colleague (ideas: Greetings: Good afternoon, how are you.
Other things you could ask: what’s your name, where are you from, who do you work with, do you
speak other languages, when do you finish today, etc.) Use ideas from what we have learned so far
in this course, and stay in the present tense: use what we are learning!. Include responses to each of
these things – it needs to be a DIALOGUE. Think about the use of tú or usted.
