In the movie, John Glenn asked for Katherine Johnson to vet his launch coordinates not
because she was an African American female mathematician. He asked because she had
proved consistently through past performance that she was the best person for the job and
her numbers were spot on every single time. It's a sad but real state of affairs that diverse
candidates often need to do more to prove themselves worthy of a role than majority
candidates, but that's often the only way to demand equality and fairness, all other factors
considered.
When arguing for the equal rights, inclusion and fair treatment, is it always imperative that
performance should matter? Why? What can be repercussions?
