Unit 1: What is Chemistry? Day 1 What is the first thing that comes into you mind when you hear the word "CHEMISTRY"? Chemistry: The study of matter and its interactions. What is matter? What are interactions? How are these two substances different? Water Spaghetti We just made observations about those substances. Observation: the data measured, collected, perceived or noticed in an experiment. What are some specific ways we can make observations? Observations can be made using... The five senses: smell, touch, taste, hear, see Instruments of measure: microscope, ruler, scale, thermometer, graduated cylinder When can observations be made? What kind of observations can be made? Qualitative: observations of a substances' qualities (five senses) Quantitative: observations of a substances' measure, magnitude, number, etc. (instruments of measure) Write three qualitative and one quantitative observations for the picture above. 1. 1. 2. 3. Variables: What is a variable? Independent Variable: The independent variable is the factor that you purposely change or control in order to see what effect it has. It is graphed on the x-axis. Dependent Variable: The variable that responds to the change in the independent variable is called the dependent variable. It depends on the independent variable. It is graphed on the y-axis.
