What is the casl?
•
•
•
•
Norm-referenced assessment
Ages 3-21
Made up of 15 tests
Four language structure categories
• Lexical/Semantic
• Syntactic
• Supralinguistic
• Pragmatic
Why is the casl a good choice?
• Can record a child’s growth over time
• No reading or writing required!
• Flexibility
3
Example:
Erin is a fifth grader whose parents have
expressed concern with communication. They stated
her grades have been dropping at school, and her
teacher said that she is not answering questions in
class or asking for help. The CASL is a great
assessment for measuring Erin’s needs in expressive
and receptive language.

Administration of casl:
Reliability
• High uniformity within the 15 tests
• Test-retest study showed strong stability among CASL
scores
• Test reliabilities range from .64-.94
• Basic concepts test range: .68-.86
6
validity
•
•
Construct validity
• Developmental progression of scores with
increase in mean raw scores
• Moderate intercorrelations among tests with
coefficient range from .30-.79
Criterion-related validity
• TACL-R
• OWLS
7
Cultural implications & Barriers
• Dialectal and speech differences
• Impaired hearing, hyperactivity, and other
special needs and accommodations needed
8
RElevant research
• In a study of 364 SLPs, a survey was completed
to determine the frequency of certain
standardized tests chosen when diagnosing
specific speech language impairments.
• Based on the findings, the CASL was the 5th
most chosen standardized assessment.
