Surname 1 Student name Professor Name Institution Course Date of submission Narrative writing The manner in which human beings lead their lives impacts their fellow human beings significantly. Communal parental hood was embraced highly before globalization. During that time a grown-up would punish a child for unethical behavior displayed by the child without minding how the parents of the child would react. I did not realize the importance of shared parenting and value of life until my elder brother got involved in a shot out while playing with a loaded gun. We were settling in the house after spending the entire day at the beach when two police officers knocked at our door informing my mother that my brother had been shot. The basis of this essay will find its foundation on the thesis that unless a misfortune befalls an individual, it is hard for human beings to learn a lesson. After receiving the sad news, my mother was required to fly from Florida (our home) to Arnold Palmer children home where my brother was receiving medical attention. I was left under the care of my mother’s friend. I spent the night at my mother’s friend and the next day my father picked me up, and together we flew Palmer children home to visit my brother. Upon reaching Palmer Children home, we were informed that my brother would be spending two weeks at the hospital recovering from the gunshot wound and collapsed lung. Fortunate for us, Ronald McDonald house situated next to the hospital offered us a place to stay with breakfast, Surname 2 lunch and dinner incentives. Finally, my brother recovered, and we flew back home. In the two weeks, my dad and I spent at the hospital I learned much about life. Though accidents are not avoidable, taking necessary measures can help mitigate disasters significantly. We later came to learn that a friend accidentally shot my brother as they were playing with a gun. Precisely, my brother and his friends were fond of playing with toy guns. In the day he got shot, however, he together with the friends decided to play with a real gun. One of his friends drew a weapon from the parents' drawer aimed it at my brothers’ chest and fired. If somebody had taken note of the dangerous game these kids were playing, my brother could not have been shot. Parents, on the other hand, should secure their ammunitions in safe places out of children reach. People take life for granted, but it is a gift from God. Seeing my bother struggling in the sickbed for two weeks made me realize how precious life is. Tomorrow is not guaranteed is also an additional lesson I gained from my bothers incident. As mentioned in the introduction section, sailing through a misfortune exposes an individual to gain a better understanding of life. It was through my brother’s accident that I came to learn human beings should always think twice about how blessed they are being alive. In sum, the experience I got from my brother's accident helped me understand life in a better perspective than I previously thought. Noted experience can be related to precautions a government takes after a misfortunate. For instance, it is not until a country is hit by a terror attack that necessary measures are devised to prevent such attacks. Though the thesis presented is proven right, it is advisable for human beings to observe their environment keenly and take necessary measures to prevent accidents instead of formulating measures to combat future disasters after they have occurred.
