Cell Analogy Project OBJECTIVE: I can recognize and name all different plant and animal cell parts. I can demonstrate my understanding of how organelles work in a cell. I can relate organelle functions to real world systems. In your lab group, you will be asked to work together to create a cell analogy and a Google Slides presentation to share with your classmates. Now start thinking about all of the organelles (parts) in a cell! How does a cell function like Disney Land or like an automobile? Think about the sights and sounds you see at the mall. You see people and cars moving about, stores, restaurants, and lights everywhere. What a flurry of activity! Does this remind you of anything?! Cells, the basic units of life, can be compared to many everyday places and things. Cells are building and breaking down material. Cells release energy from foods, and then use that energy to make needed cell parts. Cells function to make your body operate like a well-run city. ANALOGY: a similarity between like features of two things Example: In a kitchen, the refrigerator is like a vacuole because it is responsible for storing food EXPECTATIONS: (Grading rubric) Evaluation on your project part: 0 points 3 points 5 points Organelles represented None Most All Slide labeled with organelle name None Most All Slide labeled with slide creator name None Most All Analogy identified None Most All Analogy explained None Most All Accuracy of organelle structure (Does the analogy represent the cell structure?) Meet with your group. Decide which analogy you want to do. Decide what organelles each person will research. Get teacher approval. Begin brainstorming! Analogy: _______________________________________ Group member responsible (write name) Organelle This person will pick picture and write description. Analogy (person, place, thing) Nucleus Nucleolus Chromosome Endoplasmic Reticulum Ribosome Mitochondria Chloroplast Lysosome Vacuole Golgi Body Cytoplasm Cell Membrane Cell Wall Teacher to sign off on your choices ________________ Remember: It takes 3 million cells to cover the head of a pin, but only one cell analogy project to cover a large part of your Science grade! 3 Day 2: 1. After brainstorming, decide what will represent each of the part of the cell as part of your analogy 2. Each students gets a Chrome Book and logs in 3. TEAM CAPTAIN: Create a Google Slides presentation and share this with your group members and Mrs. Meginnis (Jessica Meginnis) Name your presentation using this format: Team Captain Name Cell Analogy PD # 2018 Example: Mrs. Boyer Cell Analogy PD 5 2018 4. Create organelle analogy Google Slide for your group. Find an image and write a description as to why you chose that item to represent your organelles. Remember Mrs. Meginnis’ example of Nationwide Arena! See example below. Each slide must include the name of the group member that created that slide! 4
