Nicholas Longo Professor David Philips College Writing 17 October 2021 Life is Personified When you read Robert Frost’s poems, “Out, Out” and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,”you can see that nature personified is a big part of both poems. A comparison and contrast of the two poems suggest that both poems use similar poetic devices, such as personification, metaphors and imgaery to describe themes of how quickly our youth passes and how fragile life can be before we die. Both poems used metaphors to show that life is short and delicate. Anything can happen to anyone at any time. For example, in the “Out, Out” poem, Frost describes how “Out out, brief candle”. This shows that the speech of The personification in both poems is different but implies the same end result. In the “Out Out”, the personification is the “saw” . Frost describes the saw as “snarl(s),” which gives it a creature quality. It made the poem more interesting and made the little boy understand what is going on in the real world. In the poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” the personification is nature by describing that green is gold and then the leaves turn and dawn goes away. Overall both poems describe how death ends all good things in life. But life does go on. For example, the spring flowers will die but will bloom again. Also, people will die but generations that were created will live on. Citation: Litcharts.com Study.com
