Text Structure • WALT: • Determine the text structure used in informational text. • WILF: -DOK 1 Identify types of text structures in a text -DOK 2 Cite textual evidence - DOK 3 Analyse the organization and development of ideas Text Structure Authors purposefully select the methods they use to organize their texts. • Chronological, or time-order, structure is often used in biographies and other informational texts about a sequence of events. • Authors use the cause-and-effect structure to tell how one event led to, or resulted in, another. • Informational texts can also use a compare-and-contrast structure to highlight similarities and differences between events or ideas. • Problem-and-solution structure can be found in informational or argumentative texts. • Descriptive structure is used to describe something’s features or characteristics. Let’s watch these video together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kWGQ-_ipBY Take notes while watching. Chronological or Time Order: Have you ever made macaroni and cheese? It’s simple! First, boil some water and make some macaroni. Then, make your cheese sauce. After the cheese is ready, mix it with the macaroni. Bake the entire thing in the oven. Finally, it’s time to eat! Notice how the writer is going from one step to another chronologically using transitional words. Cause/Effect Sometimes, a writer wants to explain how one event leads to another. So he uses the cause/effect structure. When authors write paragraphs to show causes and effects, they use words like cause, effect, as a result, consequently, and so… Whenever you see these words, you should know that the text structure is cause/effect. Read the example on the next slide. Problem/Solution The author will present a problem that needs to be solved. For Example: In the early 1800s, the United States needed room to grow. The problem was most people lived in the East. The cities were crowded. New land was expensive. Young families couldn’t afford to buy farms. Then, as a solution, the United States government purchased land from France. The government also acquired land from Mexico.
