What Is Personality?
 a dynamic concept describing the growth and
development of a person’s whole psychological system
 the sum total of ways in which an individual reacts to
and interacts with others.
 the measurable traits a person exhibits.

Measuring Personality
 self-report surveys
 individuals evaluate themselves on a series of factors
 respondent might lie
 Observer-ratings surveys
 an independent assessment of personality. Here, a coworker or another observer does the rating
 results of self- report surveys and observer-ratings
surveys are strongly correlated,
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
 It is a 100-question personality test that asks people how
they usually feel or act in particular situations.
 It describes 16 personality types
 Respondents are classified as
 extraverted or introverted (E or I)
 sensing or intuitive (S or N)
 thinking or feeling (T or F)
 judging or perceiving (J or P).
 a valuable tool for increasing self-awareness and providing
career guidance but unrelated to job performance.
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
 Extraverted (E) versus Introverted (I). Extraverted
individuals are outgoing, sociable, and assertive. Introverts
are quiet and shy.
 Sensing (S) versus Intuitive (N). Sensing types are practical
and prefer routine and order. They focus on details.
Intuitive rely on unconscious processes and look at the “big
picture.”
 Thinking (T) versus Feeling (F). Thinking types use reason
and logic to handle problems. Feeling types rely on their
personal values and emotions.
 Judging (J) versus Perceiving (P). Judging types want
control and prefer their world to be ordered and
structured. Perceiving types are flexible and spontaneous.
The Big Five Personality Model
 Encompass most of the significant variation in human
personality
 test scores of these traits do a very good job of predicting
how people behave in a variety of real-life situations.
 The following are the Big Five factors:
 Extraversion(assertive and sociable)
 Agreeableness(cooperative, warm and trusting.)
 Conscientiousness(responsible, organized, dependable, and
persistent)
 Emotional stability(e calm, self-confident, and secure)
 Openness to experience(creative, curious, and artistically
sensitive)
How Do the Big Five Traits Predict
Behaviour at Work?
 Research has found relationships between these
personality dimensions and job performance.
 employees who score higher in conscientiousness
develop higher levels of job knowledge
 individuals who are dependable, reliable, careful,
thorough, able to plan tend to have higher job
performance
 Conscientiousness (attention to detail, and setting of
high standards)is as important for managers as for
front-line employees.

 emotional stability is most strongly related to life

 Core Self-Evaluation
 People who have positive core self-evaluations like themselves
and see themselves as effective, capable, and in control of
their environment.
 Those with negative core self-evaluations tend to dislike
themselves, question their capabilities, and view themselves
as powerless over their environment.
 Machiavellianism
 Machiavellianism in psychology refers to a personality
trait that sees a person so focused on their own interests they
will manipulate, deceive, and exploit others to achieve their
goals.

 Narcissism
 sense of self-importance, Narcissism is extreme selfinvolvement to the degree that it makes a person
ignore the needs of those around them
 narcissists are more charismatic and thus more likely to
emerge as leaders,
 narcissists thought they were better leaders than their
colleagues, their supervisors actually rated them as
worse.
 Narcissists also tend to be selfish and exploitive and
believe others exist for their benefit.

 Self-Monitoring
 refers to an individual’s ability to adjust his or her
behavior to external, situational factors
 Individuals high in self-monitoring show considerable
adaptability in adjusting their behavior
 there is high behavioral consistency between who they
are and what they do.
 They also receive better performance ratings, are more
likely to emerge as leaders, and show less commitment
to their organizations.

 Risk Taking
 High risk-taking managers made more rapid decisions
and used less information
 recent findings suggest managers in large organizations
may actually be more willing to take risks than
entrepreneurs.
 A high risk-taking decision making may lead to more

 Proactive Personality
 proactive personality identify opportunities, show
initiative, take action, and persevere until meaningful
change occurs, compared to others who passively react
to situations.
 Proactives create positive change in their environment
 If an organization requires people with entrepreneurial
initiative, proactives make good candidates
Values
 Values are basic and fundamental beliefs that guide or






motivate attitudes or actions.
the foundation for our understanding of people’s attitudes
and motivation
Values represent basic convictions that “a specific mode of
conduct
contain a judgmental element in that they carry an
individual’s ideas as to what is right, good, or desirable
A significant portion of the values we hold is established in

 Values often underlie and explain attitudes, behaviors,
and perceptions. So knowledge of an individual’s value
system can provide insight into what makes the person
work better

Hofstede’s five value dimensions of
culture

by Geert Hofstede.
 He surveyed more than 116,000 IBM employees in 40
countries about their work-related values and found
that managers and employees vary on five value
dimensions of national culture.

 Power distance
 the degree to which people in a country accept that power in
institutions and organizations is distributed unequally.
 Individualism versus collectivism.
 Individualism is the degree to which people prefer to act as
individuals rather than as members of groups and believe in
individual rights above all else. Collectivism emphasizes a
tight social framework in which people expect others in
groups of which they are a part to look after them and protect
them.
Hofstede’s five value dimensions of
culture
 Masculinity versus femininity.
 is the degree to which the culture favors traditional masculine
roles such as achievement, power, and control, as opposed to
viewing men and women as equals.
 Uncertainty avoidance. The degree to which people in a
country prefer structured over unstructured situations.
 Long-term versus short-term orientation

People in a culture with long-term orientation look to the
future and value thrift, persistence, and tradition. In a shortterm orientation, people value the here and now; they accept
change more readily
