M EYERLA ND M PVA M S D UAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM • Coordinated by Marco Graniel, Dual Language Social Studies teacher for grades 6-8 • 2-3 Spanish language classes consisting of a reading and writing course, social studies, and language and culture course • Our enrollment has increased by 30% from the previous year • 90 % of last year's 8th grade students passed the AP Spanish exam for college credit • By the end of middle school, students may leave with up to 6 high school credits and college foreign language credit (number determined by admitting university/college) A BO U T M E M A RC O GR A N I E L 6TH-8TH D UA L L A N G UAG E SOCIAL STUDIES T E AC H E R • This is my 2nd year at MPVA • In the 9 years of my teaching experience I have worked with HISD students from 1st to 8th grade • I was a finalist for HISD Teacher of the Year in 2017 • I graduated from UHDowntown with a major in English and a minor in Spanish • I am a part-time law student at the University of Houston Law Center • I am a first-generation MexicanAmerican with roots in Estado de Mexico, Campeche, Mexico and Los Angeles, California • I enjoy playing music, sports and travelling with my wife All courses in the Dual Language program are taught primarily in Spanish. Students examine United States history from English colonization to Reconstruction to gain an understanding and appreciation of fundamental American ideals. Students focus on reading and writing informational text and speaking in formal settings. Students are introduced to the themes that will appear on the AP Exam. Students continue to build their expressive vocabulary. Students analyze authentic informational texts that contain graphs and charts. Students engage in authentic writing tasks and must be able to articulate ideas via a timed recording. Schedule a virtual interview with Mr. Graniel (link for Sign Up Genius will be sent out via e-mail a week before proficiency interviews begin) ACCEPTANCE PROCESS If you are accepted to the Meyerland Dual Language Program 1. Go to the School Choice website and accept your seat 2. Sign the Dual Language Agreement that outlines student expectations for the Dual Language program 3. Complete student registration for Meyerland (registration dates will be sent out via a callout and email)
