FAB:
Factors
Affecting
Biodiversity
GUIDE CARD
All biotic and abiotic components are
key factors for an ecosystem to
function properly. The biotic factors
are the animals, plants, fungi, or
bacteria; while the abiotic ones are the
humidity, water, air, soil, sunlight,
chemical elements, and temperature.
These two components are of equal
importance, but completely different
from each other – and this difference
make them unique yet interconnected
to one another. The relationship among
living and non-living components is
the key factor to sustain the richness
of biodiversity in all types of
ecosystems in Earth.

Hello, bee-utiful creature! I am FABee,
and I will be your guide in this
fun and FABulous journey.
Imagine yourself in a beautiful garden. Look
around you. Do you see different living
things? Do you trees, grasses, flowers,
animals, and insects? They give colors and
life to the environment, right?
Do you know that this variety of life that you
imagine is called biodiversity? Yes.
Biodiversity or the diversity among biotic
components contributes to the beauty of
natural ecosystem as well as to their
resilience and stability.
How about the weather? Is it sunny? You are
aware that sunlight is important for foodmaking process of plants, right? Physical factors
in an ecosystem are the abiotic components,
which directly affects the biotic components or
the living things.
The interconnectedness of these two components
is what keeps the cycle of life on Earth going.

ACTIVITY CARD 2:
Now that you are already familiar with biotic and
abiotic components, let me introduce to you the
different biotic and abiotic phenomenon or processes
that can affect biodiversity. For this activity, you are
tasked to collect the underlined words and write
them on the word bank below.
Let's start with Biotic Potential. It is the ability of a
population of a particular species to propagate under
ideal environmental conditions — sufficient food
supply, no diseases, and no predators.
Predation
Parasitism
BIOTIC
FACTORS
The factors that limit the biotic potential of an organism are called
environmental resistance. These include abiotic and biotic factors that
limit the organism from endlessly increasing its population.
Biotic factors include predation, competition, parasitism, and diseases.
Abiotic factors include climatic conditions, fire, and temperature.
Examples of Environmental Resistance
Some of the common examples of environmental resistance
include the availability of water and predator-prey relationship.
Water is an important resource that producers need for
growth. If the producers do not grow in an ecosystem, then
the consumers in such ecosystem cannot be sustained.
Dynamics of predator-prey populations contribute to
environmental resistance. For instance, if the predator
population is low, we can expect that the prey’s population is
high.
Biotic potential and environmental resistance
affect the carrying capacity, which is defined as
the maximum population of a species an
ecosystem can sustain indefinitely without being
degraded due to deterioration and damage.

ABIOTIC
FACTORS
To sum it all, both biotic and abiotic components play a vital
role in maintaining the stability and balance of various
processes that support life on Earth. So now, can you write one
event that could happen if example, a population of ants in
your backyard exceed its carrying capacity? Write your
thoughts below.

ACTIVITY CARD 3:
Hello again, my bee-utiful friend! You
are now here on the third activity in
this FABulous journey, where you
will complete this Bingo Card! You are
tasked to give an example of the
category in each box. You can cut
pictures and paste it to the box, draw,
or just write your answer. Now, get
your pen and do this fun activity!

ASSESSMENT
CARD 1:
BIOTIC
Welcome to the Assessment Part of this journey!

illustration below. Choose three (3) biotic
components and three (3) abiotic components
and describe their role in the given ecosystem
illustration. Use the matrix provided below.

ROLE
You are now on the second assessment, my FABulous
friend!
For this assessment, you will go out for a while and take a
look at your backyard or your community. Take a picture
of a particular ecosystem available in your area. Paste it
on the box below, then circle and name all the biotic and
abiotic factors that you can see in the picture. Lastly, in
two sentences, suggest ways on how you can help maintain
or protect the biodiversity in your community.

ASSESSMENT
CARD 3:
You reached the final assessment, my FABulous friend!
Hooray!
For this assessment, you will analyze each picture
carefully and identify: a) whether they are biotic or
abiotic factor, b) the environmental resistance, and c)
how they affect or limit the biotic potential of the given
organisms. A jumbled words can help you identify the
environmental resistance in each picture. Write your
answers on the provided matrix below.

ENRICHMENTMENT
CARD
Now that you already know about biodiversity and the relationship between biotic and
abiotic factors, as well as the environmental resistance that limits their capacity to
propagate, I want to know now how it affects your heart for our co-inhabitants.
For the enrichment card, you will share to us your five (5) ways on how you
can support, sustain, and protect biodiversity among biotic components. Use
the checklist paper below.
