Science for Sustainability
Off-site Activity & On-site Presentation
March 2020 Presentation
SCO211
Group-based Assignment
GROUP-BASED ASSIGNMENT (GBA02)
This assignment is worth 30% of the final mark for SCO211 Science for Sustainability. It
comprises the Off-site Activity and the On-site Presentation that is individually scored. Both
components are to be carried out as a group.
The cut-off date for the On-site Presentation is the allotted timeslot to your group in the last
week within your timetabled class hours. Look out for the relevant announcements on
Canvas LG site beforehand.
Note to Students:
For the Off-site Activity, you should be in the same group as in your first Group-Based
Assignment. The On-site Presentation is an assessment of what you learn in your Off-site
Activity. Attendance is compulsory for the On-site Presentation.
You should arrive 10 minutes before your group’s On-site Presentation timeslot. No
additional time will be given to latecomers. If you arrive after your timeslot is over, you will
be considered absent.
You are to maintain silence when other groups are presenting. Otherwise, 10 marks will be
deducted from you for each disruption you cause.
Your individual score is based on your own ORAL presentation. The presentation is
characterised in three weighted categories (Comprehension 40%, Analysis 40% and
Interactivity 20%) by four performance bands (Poor, Average, Good and Excellent). The
marks for Interactivity will be moderated upward or downward depending on the quality and
level of your class participation throughout the term to accurately reflect your oral
communication skill.
If you are absent or you arrive after your timeslot is over for ANY reason (including being on
medical leave of absence), your presentation score will be zero. But you have the option to
withdraw and redo the whole course if you wish.
Note that failure to participate in this Presentation successfully constitutes an automatic
withdrawal from the course SCO211 Science for Sustainability as stipulated by the
university.
IMPORTANT ADVICE:
- Presentation slides are NOT allowed because visual aids are NOT necessary for a good
discussion forum.
- Do NOT read from a laptop or written transcript. Cue cards may be a good alternative.
- From past experience, students tend to critique BETTER a project if they have visited the
recommended site because they could distinguish between claims made on the internet and
the reality on the ground.
Within your group, you are required to articulate and discuss ideas, persuading one another
where there are initial differences to achieve the common outcome of a coherent presentation.
In the process, you would learn to manage your relationships with other members efficiently

and communicate with them effectively to achieve mutual consensus. It is everyone’s duty to
contribute to a positive and cooperative learning environment by fulfilling their own
responsibilities and providing support to other group members to achieve team goals.
Question 1
As your Off-site Activity, research on one development project in Table 1 according to the
guidelines below. Your group should have decided which project to work on at the time of
group registration.
Table 1: A selection of development projects in Singapore
Code embedded in Group Name
Marina
Halus
Gardens
Rail
Project
Marina Barrage
Lorong Halus Wetland
Gardens by the Bay
Rail Corridor
For the development project that your group has chosen, carry out an online literature search
during the Off-site Activity week (or otherwise at your own time) to address the following:
 describe what the development project entails;
 examine the problems surrounding the resource(s) and/or hazard(s) that the project
aims to alleviate;
 apply the three pillars of sustainability to demonstrate sustainability of the project
paying attention to both risks and benefits;
 appraise the project for its role in the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 2015.
For your On-site Presentation, organise yourselves in the group so that each of you would
have the chance to speak substantially. The presentation must be carried out in the form of a
DISCUSSION FORUM where two or more points of view are aired. Therefore you may
speak once or more than once. The discussion should address all the above bullet points in a
rational, engaging way with emphasis on comprehension and analysis.
A group of N members will have up to 2.5N minutes altogether for the discussion. So
distribute the time among yourselves and prepare an appropriate amount of material. During
the On-site Presentation, you should also be prepared to answer questions from the tutor on
what you or other group members have presented.
You are RECOMMENDED to enhance the Off-site Activity and deepen your learning by
making an OPTIONAL visit to the corresponding site below.
