White Paper Version 1.3 – 15 June, 2018 ABSTRACT Axie Infinity is a game centered around collecting, raising, breeding, and battling fantasy creatures called Axies. Axies come in many forms: they can resemble cats, birds, and fish, and some might even have Dragon genes hiding in their DNA. Players will interact and power-up their Axies through minigames, quests, contests, and special in-game events. Axie Infinity uses the Ethereum Blockchain to ensure open, transparent ownership and a liquid, secure marketplace. Players have complete ownership of their Axies and will be able to trade and sell them smoothly and securely. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS 3 1. Introduction 1.1. INTRODUCTION Blockchain technology is already disrupting data-driven industries such as finance, logistics, and cloud services. Despite this early success, scaling and mainstream adoption still pose challenges in replacing centralized recordkeeping systems. We believe that mainstream adoption of blockchain technology will come through simple, beautiful, decentralized applications (DAPPS). Armed with this belief, we built Axie Infinity in order to popularize blockchain and demonstrate its usefulness through a beautiful, social, and captivating game. While other Ethereum games have done well, most players have been frustrated by the lack of true playability and sense of progress. We’ve designed Axie Infinity to be the first game that allows players to truly engage with their digital collectibles. 1.1 Motivation 1.1.1. Problems with centralized games Traditional gaming has been successful in crafting immersive experiences. However, these experiences are often transient, and are destroyed by the problems of centralization. Players have their items and achievements locked onto servers and databases that can be shut down at the whim of the game maker. 1.1.2. Problems with existing blockchain games Blockchain games like CryptoKitties have already succeeded in bringing new people to the blockchain. They’ve demonstrated some of the usefulness of the blockchain: transparent, guaranteed ownership and game rules that cannot be changed once the initial smart contract is deployed. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 3 However, current blockchain games have struggled in creating an immersive gaming experience. Subsequently, many of the popular blockchain games have died when the profit potential from playing declined. To date, no blockchain game has combined a user-friendly and progress-oriented gaming experience with beautiful, collectible art pieces. Axie Infinity is here to change that. In addition, many blockchain games have been created by anonymous developers that have left their communities stranded after raising obscene amounts of money. Our development team is composed of real people that have announced to the world that this our our project. You can look us all up on Linkedin! Axie Infinity’s guiding principle is that Blockchain’s main application to gaming is that it allows for true ownership and easy transferability. Ideally, future blockchain games will be playable without people having any understanding of the technology powering it! We believe Axie Infinity will eventually be one of these games. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 4 1.2 Axie Infinity Axie Infinity was built with a handful of core principles and features in mind: Captivating Artwork: For thousands of years, humans have adored and cared for creatures of every kind. Animals, and specifically pets, resonate with people on a deep, instinctual level. When building Axie Infinity we wanted to ensure that the artwork would captivate our players much like a rare and beautiful pet would. Unique Creatures: The trait system (the “DNA” of Axies) allow for incredible diversity—there is virtually an unlimited number of possible Axies. This makes Axies very collectible. Customizable Environments: Axies will live in environments called Terrariums, which players can customize with various items. This gives players—and their pet Axies—lots of opportunity for personal expression. In addition, different Terrariums will confer different bonuses to their inhabitants. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 v1.1 – 15 30 June, March, 2018 2018 5 Interaction: Influenced by the Tamagotchi of our childhood, we wanted to make sure players could interact with their Axies by raising and caring for them. Players will be able to bathe, feed, and play with their Axies for small, fun rewards. Core Gameplay (Battles): Players will be able to create teams of Axies and compete in competitive battles and tournaments. In addition, sponsored events will rewards winners of different tournaments with special prizes. Minigames: We are developing a variety of minigames for Axies. Some minigames will have specific trait requirements for Axies to enter. Minigames will provide small rewards and allow the community to have fun showing off their Axies. Social Gameplay: The game will be further developed to allow players to cooperate or compete through features like quests, duels, etc. An Open and Secure Marketplace: Within our Marketplace, players can buy and sell Axies quickly and smoothly via the blockchain. Immutable Asset Ownership: Axies exist on the blockchain, which means 1) they will live forever, 2) they can never be taken from their owners, and 3) they can exist in countless ways outside our ecosystem. Players have full control over their own Axies. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 6 2. GAME MECHANICS 2.1 Character: Axies 2.1.1 Life Cycle Axies start as Eggs, which later hatch into Larvae. After a bit of care, Larvae evolve into Petite Axies and, finally, Adult Axies. Egg Eggs can be acquired from the Axie Laboratory or from sellers in the Marketplace. Larvae Larvae are newly hatched Axies that resemble translucent tadpoles. After a bit of time and care, Larvae are ready to become Petite Axies. Petite Axie Petite Axies resemble normal Axies but they lack of advanced body parts and are smaller in size. Petite Axies eventually grow into adult Axies, and will possibly do so more quickly if they are raised well. Adult Axie Adult Axies are fully formed. They can breed, battle, and participate in minigames. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 7 2.1.2 Body Parts Axies have a wide variety of body parts that makes each Axie special. The inspiration for Axies was the Greek mythological creature, the Chimera, which possesses features from lions, goats, and serpents. We wanted Axies to capture a mythical spirit as well, so we gave them interesting parts from a variety of creatures. We were also inspired by our childhood experiences of creating creatures from our our food. Sadly, the works of art from back then were consumed shortly after creation. The Potato Beast Axies have a total of 8 different body parts and traits: eyes, mouth, ears, horns, back, tail, body pattern (or shape), and body color. Some Axies are born with missing parts. These Axies are currently under research. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 8 We’d like to introduce the first 3 Axies ever born: Puff Puff is the first Axie ever created. He’s rumored to be the result of a failed experiment to create a Dragon. The horns and reptilian features are promising, but the potato-shaped body seems off. Kotaro Kotaro is rumored to have been born in a faraway ninja village. With three deadly Katana blades protruding from his body, this Axie has no need for a tail. Ginger Ginger is an Aquatic Axie that uses her powerful fin and gills to catch her prey. Ginger also has her own pet fish that’s believed to have special abilities in battle. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 9 2.1.3 Classes Axies are classified into different classes. In addition, each of their body parts also belongs to a class. BEAST AQUATIC BIRD BUG PLANT REPTILE Some Axie body parts are common while others have only been heard of in legends and fairytales. There are 4 levels of rarity for Axie body parts: Common, Rare, Ultra Rare, and Legendary. Common Rare Ultra rare Legendary These body parts will be unlocked in the future through breeding experiments led by our bravest players. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 10 2.2 Environment: Terrarium Axies will live in special 6x6 block homes called Terrariums. Different Terrariums will grant different bonuses based on the type of Axies inhabiting them. Players will also be able to stock their Terrariums with special items. An example of 6x6 Savannah terrarium Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 11 2.3 Raising Axie Players will be able to care for their Axies in Terrarium Mode. Players will be able to feed, bathe, and put their Axies to bed, and more interactions will be added as development continues. Axies will also be able to power up through daily quests and activities. Different Axies will respond best to different routines so players will need to be strategic when planning their Axie’s growth strategy. Axie Infinity White Whitepaper Paper Version v1.3 – 15 1– June, 29 Jan, 2018 2018 2.3 Axie Battle Axies fight each other in 3 vs 3 battles. Before each battle, players can arrange the formation of their Axies in a 3x3 battlefield, taking into account each Axie’s strengths and weaknesses. For example, a player might choose to put the highest HP Axies on the front lines where they can absorb damage for their more fragile teammates. Some attack moves have their damage based on distance while some buff moves can affect adjacent allies. Understanding your Axies and placing them in optimal positions will be key factors in your team’s success. In battle, Axies use their moves in a pre-set order. Certain moves are best utilized at different times in a fight. For example, it wouldn’t be wise to use a healing move as your first turn (since none of your Axies have incurred damage yet). Create a wise strategy and your Axie team will be unstoppable. Axie Infinity White Paper v1.3 – 15 June, 2018 13 3.
