Analyzing Ads
Directions: For the advertisements you are about to see, first write what you see objectively (strictly the
facts). Then use the questions given in the notes to help you write a subjective, critical, feminist response
to the advertisement.
Questions to ask when doing a feminist analysis: How is the relationship between men and women
portrayed? What is the power between men and women? How are male and female roles defined? How do
characters embody masculinity and femininity? What does the work imply about the possibilities of
sisterhood as a mode of resisting patriarchy?
