Individual Assignment - Reflective Writing (10 marks) SCHOOL READINESS CHECKLIST SAMPLE What is the objectives? 1. To help identify children’s holistic developments and their readiness to school. 2. To help assess children’s visual, fine and gross motor skills before start school. 3. To help identify children’s self help skills and also their social skills. How is it carried out? The checklist is very easy for teachers to use to assess the children before they go to kindergarten or preschooler. It should be done in school and the teachers will give one checklist per child. The child should be in front of the teachers when they carried out this assessment. During assessment , do not forget to state the child’s personal details, tick accordingly and follow the milestones of the child. Before start the assessment we can ask simple questions and make them comfortable with us. Why is it acceptable to use? For me it is acceptable to use because it is simple but there are holistic assessment for the children before they are ready for school. The teachers will be able to assess the child by using this school readiness checklist because it covered most of the areas of the child’s development such as visual, fine and gross motor skills, social and also self help skills such as independence skills. This is still acceptable if compare to other checklist that only focus on the certain areas of development. When is the best time to use it? The best time to use it is when the child just enter the school or kindergarten. For example before they go to kindergarten or primary school. We can assess them on the first six weeks of the school. During that time they just enter school and it is good if we can assess them during that period of time. After that period then we can continue to assess which areas need to improved. Which aspects do you believe could be improved? If I could add on this school readiness checklist, I will add on the emotional and language development. The emotional development is also one of the most important things that we need to observe on the children when they are in the school. We want to know what’s their feeling during that time of period on school and how they could express themselves in the school as well. The language development area also is important because we want to know whether the child’s is able to communicate well and is able to talk using a many words or sentences. This apply to the younger children in the school.
