See how your hair falls naturally when it’s clean, dry, and un-heated. Assign a number. FYI - you can have multiple curl patterns on different parts of your head Curl Pattern 1 Straight 2a Wavy 2b Wavy 2c Wavy 3a Curly 3b Curly 3c Curly 4a Coily 4b Coily 4c Coily 2 of 22 3 of 22 Curl Pattern Find Your Hair Type Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Type 4 Straight Wavy Curly Coily 1 2a 2b 3a 2c 3b 3c 4a 4b 4c Straight 1 1 Wavy 2a 2b 2c Curly 3a 3b 3c Coily 4a 4b 4c Hair Texture At-Home Test: Take a single strand of hair and roll it between your fingers. Fine: You can’t feel it (or barely can). Medium: You can feel it pretty well Coarse: You can obviously feel it, like a thin wire Hair Texture Size (circumference, diameter, width) of each individual hair strand Coarse Medium Fine 4 of 22 5 of 22 Hair Texture Hair Texture Fine Characteristics Pros Cons Can’t (or barely) feel the hair between your fingers Easier to condition More fragile - be gentle when washing, brushing, & drying your hair Only two layers, cortex and cuticle (no medulla) You use less product (little goes a long way) so you save $$$$ Feels soft and flexible Medium Hair feels like a cotton strand Stronger than fine hair Still fragile. Need to be gentle Contains all 3 layers (thinner medulla) Still doesn’t need a ton of product Products will depend more on porosity than texture since it’s thick enough to hold protein Easily feel the strand between your fingers (like a thin wire) Strong hair Contains all 3 layers: cortex, medulla, cuticle Doesn’t get weighed down as easily by heavier products Since it is made up of more protein, it may be protein sensitive, especially if your hair is low porosity (retains moisture) Holds a decent amount of protein Coarse Need products with protein because there’s less protein in the cortex* (unless you have low porosity hair) Made up of more keratin. More resistant to heat Hair Density 6 of 22 At-Home Test: Part your hair down the middle. Look at the part and see how much of your scalp is visible. Thin: Your scalp is obviously visible Medium: Your scalp is kind of visible Thick: Your scalp is not visible Hair Density follicle proximity follicle proximity follicle proximity Thin Medium Thick Hair Density Hair Density Characteristics 7 of 22 Maintenance Thin Scalp is visible Will need lighter products like sprays and powders that won’t weigh hair down. Products will also depend more on texture and porosity Medium Scalp is kind of visible Same as thick Thick Scalp is not visible For thicker hair, heavier products are okay. Products will also depend more on texture and porosity Hair Porosity 8 of 22 At-Home Test: Next time you wash your hair, let it air dry. Pay attention to two things. 1. How fast does your hair get soaked? 2. How fast does it dry? Low-Porosity: If water droplets sit on the outside or your hair shaft for a while and takes over 2 hours to air dry. Medium-Porosity: Water absorbs relatively quickly & air dries in less than 2 hours High-Porosity: Water absorbs immediately, and air dries in under an hour. Hair Porosity Cuticles lay flat and tight Low Cuticles slightly raised Medium Cuticles highly raised or damaged High 9 of 22 Hair Porosity Hair Porosity Characteristics Signs Tips Low Cuticles lay flat and tight Products sit on your hair Moisture is hard to absorb Hair takes forever to get wet (water droplets sit on the outside) Warm water helps moisturizer absorb (raises the cuticle scales) Retains moisture really well once it’s in your hair Hair takes forever to dry May be sensitive to products with protein (stiff, frizzy) Coconut oil makes your hair dry (doesn’t penetrate) Apply products on damp (not dry or soaked) hair. Will help with penetration If doing a conditioning mask (wear a hair cover & hat to lock in heat and help raise cuticles) Use water-based (not oil) leave-in conditioners Use light oils in your hair (apricot kernel oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil are ideal) Avoid heavy creams and oils because they will sit on your hair Hair Porosity Hair Porosity Medium Characteristics Signs Tips Cuticles slightly raised Your hair is very healthy. You can use most products Easy to absorb & retain moisture Oil build-up takes a while. Hair oils can help but aren’t 100% necessary. Not too dry or frizzy. A great in-between spot to be. Water absorbs easily and dries relatively fast (an hour or two) High 10 of 22 Cuticles are highly raised and might be damaged Moisture is easy to absorb Hard to retain Hair absorbs moisture and product quickly Hair dries very fast (under an hour). You want to be careful not to use too many chemical treatments or heat tools as the damage overtime can lead to high-porosity hair You need to use heavy creams and oils to help seal your hair. USE COCONUT OIL Tends to be frizzy and dry. Do keratin treatments or protein treatments often Hair gets saturated with water very easily in the shower Use protein-based shampoos and conditioners Never have product build-up Use cold water to help close the cuticles Usually brought on by damage. It can be reversed with right products & regimen. Genetics can also play a role Apple cider vinegar products, the acidity level can help close your cuticles. DIY You want to use 1 part ACV, 4 parts water. Products also linked below Scalp Moisture 11 of 22 At-Home Test: To discover your scalp moisture level ask yourself these questions? 1.
