The Importance of Classroom Management
Introduction
It is crucial for educators to be able to organize their classroom and manage student
behavior. Having an effective classroom management system in place makes good instruction
possible. Disruptive behavior is a significant problem within the classroom and is one of the
reasons that instructors leave the field (Oliver & Reschly, 2007). The purpose of this paper is to
discuss my personal classroom management strategies that promote student success.
My Philosophy of Classroom management
I believe that students should have autonomy over their learning. I want to create a
classroom space that allows students to have autonomy and adhere to expectations. It is
important for educators to use effective and non intimidating classroom management strategies,
but be seen as an authority figure. I will put in place preventative strategies to create a safe space
that is conducive to learning, by walking around and being aware of what is going on. As
educators we must model the desired actions that we want from students.
I will manage the classroom by greeting the students at the door (Terada, 2019). When
educators greet students at the door this not only sets a positive tone, but it also allows the
3
educator to understand the mood the student is in. By understanding the students mood this can
help prevent disruptions.
Rules are important, but having clear expectations and working with the students to
create a list of norms helps them have autonomy. When students are able to see something that
they have created it makes them proud and want to stick to those expectations. This will build a
sense of community with the words that they generated and they will own their behavior in the
classroom because this is what they created. Classroom expectations, school rules and routines
should be followed and applied fairly (Terada, 2019).
When managing a classroom it has to be an active and equitable environment where all
students are respected and have the same opportunities to learn and develop their knowledge
regardless of their background. My classroom will be an environment that fosters students'
inquisitivity and curiosity. This will intrinsically motivate them to behave and develop a passion
for learning.
Benefits of having effective classroom management and the effect of school variables
4
The benefits of having effective classroom management is increased student success and
student engagement. When classroom management systems are put in place and enforced it
creates an orderly learning environment. Classroom management systems maintain positive
student behavior and create a positive learning environment. It also reduces high levels of stress
and prevents symptoms of teacher burnout (Oliver & Reschly, 2007).
School variables have a great impact on student learning and behavior. For instance,
when class sizes are smaller, it leads to more advantages, more effective use of time, more
effectiveness on what students do and more use of supplementary enrichment activities and
availability to help and motivate each student (Buffman, 2009). When classrooms are large then
the educator has to deal with more learning styles, different attitudes and values. Classroom
management is very important and a reliable system in place is crucial to ensuring student
success.
Life experiences that have shaped my personal philosophy of classroom management
What has shaped my personal philosophy of classroom management and student
engagement is being a student and working in a classroom. Having these two different
experiences as being a student and being an educator has helped me shape my personal
philosophy. As a student I looked forward to the teacher asking for my input of things and giving
me autonomy within the classroom. My teacher gave me a voice in my learning and that made
me want to engage more in my learning by giving me a sense of ownership.
5
Having clear expectations and adhering to rules lessens the drama and confusion. When
students know what is expected of them the class flows easy, with less chaos. When the educator
knows school rules and implements them throughout the school that limits confusion. For
example, if the school rule is not to take your cell phone out in class then teachers should respect
and enforce that rule. Sometimes there are teacher(s) that don’t enforce that rule and it makes it
hard on the student and all of the educators. Classroom management is important for all
educators and all educators should understand and implement it daily within the school setting.
The Role of Technology
Technology plays a role in my philosophy because the behaviors of the students within
the classroom are a product of the classroom environment. There was one student who would get
off task. I would walk around the classroom and always make myself visible and this made him
stay on task.. If I didn’t walk around the classroom, then I would be encouraging this type of
behavior and more students would engage in this behavior.
Technology inspires creativity within students because tech allows us to connect to
people all around the world. We can talk to people all over the world by using Zoom, Skype and
Google Meets. Students can talk to industry experts about current issues within that industry vs
looking at outdated textbooks.
6
Using online games inspires student learning because it helps them grasp a concept that
they may have had trouble grasping before. It drives creativity because students are in control of
the variables. Technology has no boundaries and using it in all settings will increase engagement
and learning.
