PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action
(Mechanism) -Stops the growth of bacteria
-Broad-spectrum -inhibits cell wall synthesis

Therapeutic Use
(Purpose) -Txs wide variety of bacterial infections
such as UTIs, bone and joint infections
-Used prior to some surgeries to prevent
infections

(Adverse Effects)
-GI: N/V/D
-GU: candidiasis, vaginitis
-Skin: Pain, redness, swelling at injection site

Contraindications/Precautions
-hypersensitivity to drug
-allergic to ingredients
Pregnancy Category: B (generally safe)
Medication Administration
Special Assessments:
-IV: 10 min peaks
6-10h duration
Monitor lab work, WBC, CDC
Safe Dose Range: 1g IV q 12h
Nursing Interventions
-Monitor V/S, I/Os and s/sx of
superinfection
-Monitor for N/V/D and tx
appropriately
Interactions
-May increase anticoagulant effects
- Increased renal toxicity with loop diaretics
Antidote: NA
Client Education
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
-Stable V/S & lab results
-No S/Sx of infection
-ie: low temp, clear-yellow urine, & no pain or odor with
micturition
