RIVER DEPOSITIONAL LANDFORM PART 1 The land on either side of the river into which the river floods. (Middle & Lower course) Bluff line- this line marks the outer edge of the river channel as the river floods. Floodplain BL BL B Keys: River banks-B Bluff lines -BL River bed Levees- this is built up on either side of the river channel as the river floods. B Alluvium -fine eroded material deposited at times of flood. This can improve the fertility of the soil. It consists of silt, sand, clay, and gravel, & organic matters. Floodplain flooded River channel Floodplains Floodplains Stages in formation of a floodplain & Levees 1. Normal flow of a river before flood occur. Bluff line Bluff line 2. During heavy rain the water in the river channel rises until it reach bankful stage. Levees 3. As it continue to rise it overflow and flood onto surrounding floodplains until It reaches the bluff lines. At time of flood coarser material which are heavier and coarser material will be deposited first at both edge of rive banks. Repeated flooding, more and more coarser material such as pebbles, gravel even boulders will be deposited forming raise river banks called levees. Finer materials such as clay and silt will be transported further away from the channel and deposited on the floodplain.
