What is the function of the cell
membrane?
All cells have a cell membrane. It controls what enters and leaves the cell to
maintain an internal balance called homeostasis .
It provides protection and support for the cell.
What is the structure of the cell
membrane?
It is composed of a lipid bilayer. Two layers of phospholipids
Made of
a) one phosphate polar head
b) two non-polar fatty acid tails.
c) Protein channels embedded in membrane
Cell membranes have pores (holes) in it which make it selectively
Permeable: allows some molecules in and keeps other molecules out.
A. Passive transport: does not require energy. Move particles from high
What are the two types of transport? concentration to low concentration
B. Active transport does require energy. Moves particles from low concentration to h
concentration.
