LEARNING AND TEACHING APPROACHES
i.
Lecture – Impart to students core information on various units outlined
above. Usually done in a face to face format in the classroom.
ii.
Discussions – Usually conducted in tutorial sessions to ensure that students
gain knowledge from lecture sessions, and are able to apply principles to real
world problems. In identified areas of weaknesses, knowledge is reinforced.
iii.
Case Analyses – This provides students with opportunities to identify,
analyze, and recommend solutions to real world problems.
iv.
Problem Solving – a class format in which the lecturer provides a structured
context for students working collaboratively to solve problems.
v.
Independent Learning – is a learning environment where students are actively
engaged in mastering module content and in developing essential skills by
working independently or in self-managed teams. Oral and/or written reports
are submitted to the lecturer to ensure coverage of the material.
vi.
Projects – students, organized in groups or independently, conduct research
on various topics from material presented for submission to lecturer for
assessment.
vii.
Site Visits - Students are taken to a variety of enterprises (manufacturing
and services) to experience first-hand life in the discipline of Operations
Management. Enterprise leaders demonstrate for students the various aspects
of the operations management cycle.

Assessment
A number of challenges face the operations management discipline. The students
will be assessed on their understanding of these issues by way of course work and
a final project totaling 100 marks broken down as follows:
A. Course Work (60 Marks) continuous assessment:
In-class Quizzes
 Quiz 1
 Quiz 2
 Quiz 3
Multiple choice
Multiple choice
Multiple choice
Students will be assessed on comprehension of content delivered. To
encourage their attendance and participation, they will not know before hand
the times for the quizzes.
Cases
 Students will work in groups to discuss cases in operations
management that will be assigned. The cases will focus on challenges
(safety and security, lean manufacturing, big data etc) facing the POM
discipline. The students will be required to do the analysis and make a
formal presentation to the class. This is valued at 20% inclusive of an
individual component of 5%.
B. Final Project (40 Marks)
Students will be assigned one of the challenges being experienced by
Production / Operations Managers. They will be required to conduct a
research on the challenge in an organisation of their choice. They will be
cautioned about using ‘large’ organisations, but rather to approach smaller
organisations. They will be required to:
 Prepare a brief Literature Review on the challenge
 Prepare an Interview Guide for the organisation based on the
information gleaned from the Literature Review
 Make contact with an informed stakeholder of the organisation
 Set up an appointment with the stakeholder
 Secure information from the stakeholder guided by interview
schedule
 Analyse Information against that gleaned from the Literature
Review
 Based on the gap revealed above, make recommendations to
‘plug’ same
 Conduct workshop to share with organisational members
