Example of a TEEEEL paragraph on Theme in my novel Growing up and facing responsibilities and realities of adulthood is a key theme in “The Shadow” by Wilfred Jones. When Gordie and his friends go on a holiday camp, they think it is going to be an adventure, and Jones describes their laughing and “wisecracking” as “naively innocent and playful like puppies.” The simile and visual imagery accentuates their innocence. Later in the novel, Gordie becomes aware of the difficult life his parents have trying to financially and emotionally support him when he overhears their conversation. His mum is distraught when she shouts at his dad” It’s your fault!” The exclamation mark and abrupt accusatory tone emphasises the stress she is under and the responsibility she feels. The reader has seen Gordie change from an innocent uncaring child, to a wiser and more aware boy, who realises the responsibilities of adulthood.
