De Vera, Rylan Earl B. BSA – 1st Year “What is Communication?” In a Merriam-Webster dictionary, the term "communication" is defined as the process where data or information interchanges between individuals through a common medium of symbols, signs, or behavior. Communication can be in the form of hand gestures, oral language, written texts, and such that require to be discerned by the receiver. To put it simply, it is the process of sending or receiving information. In some articles, the oldest known type of communication where it became the medium are caveman paintings (Syles, 2015). There are many claims that ancestors are trying to communicate to other cavemen through figures and symbols in caves and walls. To sum it up, historians believe that humans are finding ways to communicate visually, and communication started through pictures without the invention of text language. 3 Importance of Communication 1. It helps individuals to understand the message conveyed by the sender. There are a lot of instances that humans misunderstood since they do not communicate with other people. It also creates clarity and harmonious relationship among society. 2. It helps individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, opinions, and such. Communication became a means to demonstrate what you really feel which are shown limitedly in virtual and indirect exchange. 3. It also became a way to evolve and innovate the way of life. Big pictures and painting, which convey different meanings, became fit into figures such as letters and alphabets, thus becoming more concise and precise to what an individual wants to tell.
