Brexit
The European Union is a political and economic union whose objectives were to create a common
market without national barriers for free trade e.g. border inspections, encouraging economic, social
and territorial unity.
The addition of the UK as a new member was in 1973. However, it never was part of fundamental
policies such as economic and monetary unification (Pound sterling is the official currency).
To restore the British Sovereignty, implement control in borders ( restrict free movent of people),
cease the financial support to the EU budget, in 2016 the UK voted for leaving the European Union in
a Referendum. Although middle- voters and highly qualified people were firmly in favour of
remaining in the EU, some of their reasons were that EU workers contribute to the UK economy,
free trade among countries benefits the economy and make business more profitable etc
The UK became the first member state to exit from the EU with 52% of vote to leave . On March 29 th
, 2017 Britain introduced a formal mechanism named “Article 50 of Lisbon Treaty of the European
Union.
The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union must approve the withdrawal
agreement, this process was expected to be negotiated and concluded in two years but this period
was extended.
On January 31st 2020, was the official date of EU exit under PM Boris Johnson administration. The
UK is facing a period of transition which includes negotiations on various agreements related to
travel (border controls), trade ( services and goods, security (combat crime and terrorism), access to
fishing waters etc.
Although the UK is not a member of the UE, therefore the UE law has not legislature power or
authority in the UK Supreme Court. Westminster Parliament must make its laws compatible with
Humans Rights Legislation.
