Homologous Series ❖ Homologous series is a group of compounds which have similar chemical properties and can be represented by a general formula. ❖ Examples of homologous series are: ✓Alkanes ✓Alkene ✓Alkynes ✓Alcohol ✓Carboxylic acid Etc. Characteristics of Compounds in the same Homologous Series The homologous series is characterized by : 1• The two adjacent members are differ by a – CH2 – group or 14 atomic mass unit. 2• The homologues shows difference in physical properties due to change in molecular mass and structural arrangement of molecule. 3• All the members of a series have same general formula, general methods of preparation and similar chemical properties due to same functional group.
