The question I choose for this paper is: How is global warming affecting the great barrier reef? I
chose this question because global warming affects our lives in every aspect, however if it starts
killing off the ocean we have bigger problems from limited food source’s and species dying off,
to the rise in the ocean levels creating a forever change in our geographical layout of the
continents. The two sources I used was an article from Huffingtonpost.com (my questionable
source) and a journal from Sciencedaily.com (my scientific reliable source).
The article from Huffington post was called “The great Barrier Reef Has Been Forever Changed

by Global Warming, Scientists Warn” (2018 Mosbergen). In this article the writer spoke to a
coral die off and severe bleaching event in 2016 and 2017. She spoke about a large quantity of
the coral off the Great Barrier reef being essentially cooked to death, some of the coral proved to
be resilient and survived the rise in the water temperature. I found this article highly intriguing,
however, after further inspection I noticed that the author did not use proper citing. Anyone she
quoted she would state the title and name in the body of the writings. But the quotes and the
information became quickly interchanged with her own words. This created a distrust in the
writings. I could not directly go to the sources she was siting from to verify the information the
author was saying were quotes given from the different individuals.
The journal from Science daily was titled “Global warming is transforming the Great Barrier

Reef” (2018) this Journal spoke to the study conducted by ARC Centre of Excellence in Coral
reef Studies on the “northern Great Barrier Reef’s catastrophic die-off following the Marine heat
sh
wave of 2016” (2018). This Journal not only outlined the source but also gave a comprehensive
resource list for the journal. This journal also quotes some additional reputable sources like U.S
national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the professor from James cook University
for Coral Centre of excellence.

Both carry very valuable information, however looking at the pure makeup of both these articles
the reputable nature of the second journal written on the Science daily web site is glaring. The
information presented in that journal and the fact that it was sited properly with links you could
follow to gather more in-depth information if needed makes it more scientifically valid. When
looking at the articles from a research standpoint you can’t just take someone’s word for the

information being presented. You must be able to validate the information.
