Name:
Pset 6
Due: April 20 by 5pm
Feel free to work with other students or discuss on Piazza, but each student should turn in
their own solutions. You may either write on this pdf or upload separate work.
If you’d like extra practice some good examples are:
Ch 9) 24, 25, 28, 30, 34, 41, 44, 46, 51, 62, 63, 64, 74, 75, 76, 125
1. Define state function. Label E, H, q, and w as either “state function” or “not a
state function”. Would Hess’ Law work if H had the opposite label? Explain.
2. I take a mole of monoatomic ideal gas from 12 L and 3 atm to 15 L and 4 atm by
two paths:
P1: 12 L, 3 atm 20 L, 3 atm 15 L, 4 atm (compression at constant pressure =4 atm)
P2: 12 L, 3 atm 12 L, 4 atm (expansion at constant pressure =4 atm) 15 L, 4 atm
Write the q, w, E, and H for each of the two paths. Which values are pathindependent?
3. My too-hot coffee (270 mL) is in an insulated vessel. I want to cool it down so I add a
25g ice cube. It cools down to a more enjoyable 83oC. Assuming the hot coffee
behaves the same as water, what was the original temperature of the too-hot coffee?
(water heat capacity= 4.18 J/goC, heat of fusion= 334 J/g)
4. Using appendix four, write H for the dissociation NH4Cl in an aqueous solution. After
such a solution reaches equilibrium, would it be acidic or basic?
