Creatinine
Specimen needed: Small amount of blood.
Preparation: No special instructions such as fasting or special diets are requested.
Processing Instructions:
Stat/Line draws: 3 mL green/yellow-top (plasma separator) tube
Routine requests/off-site specimens: 3.5 mL gold-top (serum separator) tube
2 mL serum or plasma; minimum 0.5 mL is needed
Reference range:
normal creatinine levels dL from 18 to 60 years old.
men : 0.9 to 1.3 mg/dL
women: 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL
Normal levels are roughly the same for people over 60.
Clinical Significance: Creatinine levels in blood is significant in evaluation of kidney function and in
monitoring renal dialysis. High serum creatinine levels in the blood indicate that the kidneys aren’t
functioning properly.
Glucose
Preparation:
Fasting is required for FASTING BLOOD GLUCOSE TEST, this means that you can not eat nor drink 8 hours
prior to the testing.
No fasting needed for random glucose test
Processing Instructions:
Required specimen volume: 1mL whole blood, minimum 0.4mL
Container: Heparinized syringe or Lithium heparin (no gel) microtainer
Transport immediately to the Chemistry Stat Lab; specimen must be analyzed immediately.
Reference range:
Fasting Blood Glucose Test =70-100 mg/dL
Random Blood Glucose Test=below 125mg/dL
Clinical Significance: Abnormally elevated levels of whole blood glucose are found in metabolic
disorders, most notably diabetes mellitus.
