P R O D U C T I N F O R M AT I O N Dead Tank Circuit Breakers up to 420 kV Installation time of less than 16 hours The 362-420 kV rated Dead Tank Breakers provide robust performance at a low cost of ownership. Tested for high transient recovery voltage (TRV) performance applications, mechanical endurance and switching capabilities and designed for the toughest transmission applications. 01 420PM-HB Dead Tank Circuit Breaker Why Hitachi ABB Power Grids? Our focus is on providing ulitity and industrial customers with technology that increases the efficiency, availability and reliability of the power grid. We stand on over a century of experience with many firsts in the market. We drive our developments to be centered around solutions, to solve problems so that our customers can better serve their customers. Design features • Installation time of approximately 16 hours as the breaker is shipped in only 4 sections (3 pressurized poles with bushing and mechanism attached, and frame with associated control housing) • Enhanced safety and simplified maintenance • Rated up to and including 63 kA with no external line to ground capacitors • Slipover current transformers that are added or removed without disassembly, reducing maintenance downtime and eliminating contamination risk • 10 year warranty on the HMB operating mechanism • Widely installed base in all environments and applications • Global service organization, local everywhere For shunt reactor switching, Hitachi ABB Power Grids now offers Dead Tank Breakers with applied Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs). This solution increases the reliability of the breaker by limiting damaging overvoltages. Applications • Line, transformer, reactor and capacitor switching • Point-on-wave switching • High seismic applications • High altitude applications HITACHI ABB POWER GRIDS Reliable operating mechanism For many years, Hitachi ABB Power Grids has used operating mechanisms with energy mechanically stored in springs. The spring operating mechanisms used for the 362-420 kV Dead Tank Breakers are BLG or HMB depending on customers’ application and requirements. The BLG spring spring design is a well-proven technology with a high degree of total reliability for the circuit breaker and a minimal need for maintenance. The mechanism operates by an endless chain which links a cam disc and a set of springs. The chain, which is in two loops and runs over a motor-driven sprocket, transmits energy when the springs are being charged and drives the cam disc around when the circuit breaker is to be closed. The springs are kept in the charged state by a latch that is released when the breaker is being closed. This enables rapid reclosing of the breaker after a dead time interval of 0.3 s. After sales and service Hitachi ABB Power Grids has a long history of supporting utilities’ needs for expanded breaker performance in response to the growing demands of a continuously evolving power grid. Our approach to product support is to offer services that improve reliability and extend the operating life of a customer’s circuit breaker, while reducing operation and maintenance costs at each life cycle phase. We offer the most comprehensive and cost-effective alternatives to the purchase of new power equipment. The HMB spring hydraulic mechanism is comprised of a stack of disk springs that stores mechanical energy. That energy is hydraulically translated through an operating shaft to open and close the contacts of its respective interrupter. Spring charge is automatically maintained by a universal motor and pump. Each fully-integrated mechanism is self-lubricating and hermetically-sealed, affording excellent reliability and long term stability.
