Magna Carta
• Meaning ‘Great Charter’
• A peace treaty between King John of England and his barons (who did not trust him).
• It established the principle that all people, including the king, had rights and
responsibilities under the law.
• It is important in the development of democracy as it influenced many other
documents, including the Australian Constitution.
• The Charter itself still lives. It guarantees citizens the right to justice and the right to a
fair trial.
